Into a chalice, pours quite nearly pitch black, a little head that hives way shortly but brought back with a swirl, and a lot of spotty lacing. Bourbon and rye are the most obvious aromas, other roasty toasty malty tones, a good aroma, but kind of one dimensional toward the bourbon. Kind of the same story with taste, lots of bourbon and rye, some chocolate too, its a bit warm from the alcohol, full bodied and quite tasty. I've had this one several times, on tap and in bottle, and I've enjoyed it every time.

A- Black with a half finger tan head with decent staying power.

S- Sweet malts, dried fruits and roasted malt.

T- Slightly sweet complex malt flavor up front with strong hop flavor and bitterness coming though in the middle. A slight touch of sweetness then smooth hop bitterness/dryness wrap things up.

M- Very smooth and rich, almost viscous.

D- I'll prolly grab some more.

While not the best, but defineatly worth a try if you're a fan of the style.

Appearance - Very dark brown. Appears opaque. Think brown head that dissipates quickly.

Smell - Dark molasses scent most prominent.

Taste - Begins with a dark but sweet malt. Dark chocolate or molasses with a touch of something like banana. Finishes with a prominent but not overwhelming floral hop. Alcohol is noticeable. Interesting.

Mouthfeel - Creamy. A little alcohol bite.

Drinkability - Very enjoyable beer that's crafted for savoring. This brewer makes some darn fine beers and this is one of them.

Nothing special in the looks department. Very thin tan head on a fairly gentle pour, quickly gives way to a thin collar. The black body almost allows some light through the edges. Quite mildly and finely carbonated. Despite the relatively poor head and thin collar this is a well laced brew with thin sticky sheets that give way to intricate webbings, and made me bump up the score from 3.5 to a 4.

Boozy scents of oaky vanilla overtop of roasted aromas of milk chocolate and espresso. The earthy spice of rye grain and decaying leafy hops are less prominent but add significant complexity and depth to the overall olfactory presentation.

Much like the nose as far as taste goes. A hint of dark fruits reveals itself just before the finish.

There is alot going on here in this medium bodied brew, but the noticeable alcohol heat detracts somewhat. The boozy oakiness is the predominant element in this brew, from the aroma to the taste as well as the feel. There is a nice creaminess which serves as a decent counterpoint to the alcohol heat. The rye seems almost lost in this, or perhaps it just blends too well into the other flavours.

This is most likely best sipped and savoured. The boozy heat and alcohol just wouldnt have it any other way. As a big fan of rye beers I was really looking forward to this but the damn alcohol heat just keeps preventing me from really enjoying this one, and limiting its drinkablility. Another solid brew from Tyranena, some fine tuning or perhaps some age could turn this good beer into a great one.

Nearly turning the corner on 40, I wonder if this is where I'm headed...et tu, Rob?

Dark brown in color, beautiful,. toasty tan head keeps command above...lovely looking...

I get the rye, roasty and dry...nicely toasted. Dusted cocoa powder...

Taste: a chocolate bomb, with a muted explosion, dry rye reigns it in. Simply put: someone put peanut butter in my chocolate!
Cool, classical, and utterly satisfactory...not too sweet, not too rich, but with very prominent booziness.
Rye porters seem to be the way to go...put some in a whiskey barrel and you've got me on a leash!
Cool...lightly sweet, big time dry, full on flavor, expanse satisfaction.

Small capped bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 02/04/08, so quite fresh.

Very dark brew, one shade under pitch black, with a foamy dark brown head with good retention and amazing lacing coating the glass on its way down.
Aroma is mostly of roasted malts, quite pleasant, with additional chocolate, coffee and dark fruit notes.
Medium bodied, the taste is quite similar, with a bitter roasted opening, a sweet malty medium, and a bitter dry finish (rye?).
Drinkability is as high as you will find for such a tasty beer. Very impressive.

Pours black with mahogany highlights. Thick creamy tan head with nice lacing down the glass. Boozy aroma of rye whiskey, alcohol, oak and roasted malt. The mouthfeel is barely medium... a little thinner than I'd expect for a porter.

Dirty Old Man is nice robust porter. Flavors of dark chocolaty malt reveal themselves first. Rye grain arrives midway, with oak and vanilla layered behind it. The finish has a fruitiness to it that ends with alcoholic vapors.

Another decent offering in the Brewers Gone Wild! series. I'm glad to see a return to the barrel-aged brews.

Pours an opaque dark brown color with a big stiff tan head that fades back to drink like a Guinness pour. It generates heavy lacing patterns, some 3D. The smell is really nice; chocolate, caramel and an underlying vanilla combination that shouts out 'get ready for one heck of a creamy texture'. Adequately carbonated, the mouth feel is full bodied and creamy smooth. There is also an interesting complexity coming from the barrel treated component. Full flavored, the taste matches the nose. Finishes with cherry vanilla warmth that lingers nicely. This is way too easy to drink! A subtle warmth to the chest on the way down. Nicely done. I hate to be a curve breaker, but this one's for me. Scoring additional points with me for imagination. Highly Recommended. Shout out to Pitmonkey for the opportunity to consider this one; Thanks.

60% Malt Beverage

Pours a rich black color, hints of deep reds are visible when the beer is thinned out. Rather shallow tan crown

Strong aroma, lots of dark chocolate flavors, cherry, alcohols.

Delicious, rich complex flavor, with similarities to an imperial stout. Roasted malts, a definite rye whiskey character, and dark chocolate flavors. Some alcohol at the end along with a bit of oak barreled aftertaste. Good full body beer. Very tasty.

There's a lot of adjectives in this beer name that normally indicates superlative beer, such as "imperial," "rye," "aged," and "whiskey barrels." For all those words, I wasn't tremendously impressed with the beer underneath the label. It was good, but not as good as the Devil Made Me Do It Imperial Porter. Still, I accept that some of these "Brewers Gone Wild!" series beers will be better than others, and this beer hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for this series.

Appearance is black, opaque and foamy. Aroma was a little whiskey-like, a bit grapey, and a bit roasty, but it was also a bit watery. Flavor was less intense than I expected, and the ABV of this beer is lighter than I thought it would be. Mouthfeel is a bit watery. Not a bad beer, but it didn't live up to my expectations set by other "Brewers Gone Wild!" offerings.

I'd recommend this beer, as I'd recommend any beer in this series, but this is definitely not their best work.

I bought this bottle at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI.

This brew pours black with a ruby glow and a very thick, frothy tan head with tremendous lace. The aroma is highly chocolately, as well as roasty and sweet with a hint of alcohol. The flavor is moderately bittersweet, a bit spicy along with roast and chocolate, rather complex. The mouthfeel is quite creamy and body/carbonation are medium. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall an impressive brew with great mouthfeel, complex flavors and impressive drinkability for a big beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic. pours a deep chocolate opaque brown with phenomenal settling, which takes a couple minutes. head is coffee colored, creamy and rich, and remains for the duration of consumption.

aroma is roasted, with notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee up front. an earthy base gives the brew a warming character, most likely from the whiskey barrel aging. no rye in the aroma.

taste is burnt and roasted, with the same notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee. the whiskey gives the profile an earthy base, much like the aroma would suggest. dark fruit notes are in the background, alongside an alcoholic tinge. wonderful profile.

mouthfeel is very rich and creamy. the brew is full-bodied, with a slight note of alcohol in the background. finishes smooth and on a dry roasted note.

drinkbility is decent, mainly because the brew is so rich and full of flavor, one could very well be enough. that being said, this brew is very well refined on the palate and in the nose. this is a brew worth savoring. cheers!

Nice black pour, with a tan head that leaves just a small ring in the glass. less lacing than I would have expected.
Aroma is of roasted malts, pretty exclusivly. But I can get a touch of hops out of there, and maybe a little of the rye.
Taste, this is interesting and I really enjoyed the play here (at least in my head). Not sure I am imagining things here, but almost a dirty sock touch to this one, which normally might be ofputting but it balances into a good roasted rye flavor.
Good creamy smooth mouthfeel and this really is a good beer. Not sure if the name came from what I am tasting, but the name helped me enjoy the beer more.

The black beer erects a good sized brown cap of froth. The retention is outstanding as are the lacing properties. I like the nose quite a bit. Lots of chocolate notes and fudge and tootsie roll like characteristics. Light scents of whiskey add a nice little accent as well. Chocolate is pretty huge on the palate as well. Definitely the dominant flavor characteristic. A little roasted and rye bitterness in the aftertaste. Whiskey is subtle, but nice nonetheless. A little bit of vanilla comes out every once in a while. And alcohol is only slightly noticeable. The body is medium or so and the liquid flows naturally over the tongue giving a very polished feel to it.

Tyranena bottled 2/4/08

Appearance: Dirty oil black,minimal head,slight lacing.

Smell: Awesome smoky malt scent. Choccolaty.

Taste: Nice and rich, complex. Just a hint of a sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, somewhat chewy. Lightly carbonated.

Drinkability: Very easy drinking beer. This is my first Baltic style Porter, so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm sure the ABV is high, but the alcohol is hidden well.
Tyranena rarely dissapoints in my opinion.

A: I know that barrel aged beers don't generally have good head retention, but I still wish there was more. Nice dark brown body with barely any light getting through.

S: It's not quite strong enough for me, but still nice. A touch of whiskey is in there with a nice maltiness.

T: The rye whiskey is much more prominant in the flavor than the aroma. It might be a bit over the top, but it's still tasty. Initially, there is a good malty presence from the porter and then the whiskey hits, lasts a second, and then everything fades into a nice light roastiness.

M: Medium bodied initially but seems to thin out at the back of the palate. That seems typical of BA beers.

D: Not too shabby. I was worried about the rye adding too much spiciness but I didn't find that at all. A very enjoyable beer.

appearance: flashy yellow label per the usual, poured into a snifter, dark mahogany body, nice tan head and solid retention

smell: dark chocolate, big roasty aromas, whisky, a touch smoky

taste: comparisons can be made to the "who's your daddy porter" - but this one definitely has some toasted rye buried beneath providing a touch bitter kick, dark chocolate, caramel, whisky, more caramel...quite tasty

mouthfeel: smooth medium body, bitter tones

drinkability: good

Pitch black body with thin tan head that sticks around as a ring.

Smell and Taste are very complex and take several takes to try and figure out what is going on here. I get notes of booze, lots of malt, coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit. The rye whisykey is there but I felt it would be more of a player since it was put on the label. Feel is rich and luxurious. Coats the tounge and lets the flavors soak in.

This is a perfect nightcap beer. Farthest thing from a session beer. I wish I could enjoy another, but one is enough. For a brewery known as hop masters, this is a great beer to round them out to be know as masters. I look forward to the next Tyranena brew.

A-A very forceful pour yields a low 1/4" light cream-cocoa colored head that disappears quickly to a low skim of lacing. Pretty dark brown, almost black color, with dark ruby highlights when held up to the light.
S-Not a whole lot of aroma here... a bit of smoke, sweet malts and a hint of bourbon so mild I almost believe it's my imagination....
T-Bits of earthy smoke, molasses, faint black licorice, tiny bit of tanginess maybe from the rye with a wee bit of hops riding in back, some chocolate hints throughout. Whiskey/Bourbon? Hmmm... it's there, but you have to search a bit. I'm really thinking they cut the rye whiskey barrel aged portion of this too much with the non-barrel aged bit and diluted the most integral part of barrel aged beers.
M-Decent creaminess and thickness. The low carbonation makes this one smooooth.
D-Not sure of the ABV on this one (it doesn't taste overly high). I like the taste and feel like you could drink a couple in a sitting, but they might sneak up on you a bit.
I much prefer their Devil Made Me Do It coffee porter and look forward to it's re-release, but this one is certainly worth seeking out and trying.

Solid bodied, the darkest mauve-brown possible. In simpler terms, it's black unless held to a light source. The head is small and brown, and resides for most of the time as a collar.
Fudge brownie aroma, with a persistence of toasted grain, which only slowly hints at rye. Traces of cappuccino, as char and the vanilla barrel-aging traits arise. It smells very Italian-desert-y, and delicious, but on the whole, the rye-whiskey barrel thing seems somewhat impotent, scent-wise, aside from this and some intermittent peppery wafts.
It rolls across the tongue a liquid fudge bath, stayed from a dooming sweetness by a prickly graininess...but only partially. It's like rolling a wet Tootsie Roll in flecks of rye. The peppery, spicy qualities of the grain are ultimately usurped by the sweet chocolate fudginess of the candy. And so it is here. Rye is a bit player, both grain-wise and whiskey-barrel-wise. The fudge is so dense and bullying as to not let anything else play. The barrel shows up late with heavily toasted coconut, caramel, and hazelnuts. Rye Whiskey and Bourbon are very closely related, and this does not tease out the subtle differences, other than it is marginally drier than Who's Your Daddy. The close is a continuation of fudge, inching towards chocolate milk, and a groping oaky vanilla woodiness. If you are looking for hops, you'll need to recalibrate your GPS system.
Full bodied, and basically obese in the mouth. Carbonation is virtually nil. For what it is, it fits perfectly. This is liquid dessert. Like sucking tiramisu through a straw. It's a great nightcap, but drinking it in succession might be asking too much.

As a fan of Rye in both its beer and whiskey forms, I was hoping for more of it in the profile. This is a blend of 40% Rye whiskery barreled beer and 60% unbarreled. Who's Your Daddy remains better because the barrel adds more, and I'd wager the blending percentages are vastly different.
As it stands now, the rye doesn't live up to its billing. It fails to show up in the grain bill, and the barrel hues lack complexity. I'll probably never say this again, but it needs more barrel influence to tease out the rye subtleties. For instance, take a sip of Sazerac Rye (6 or 18 year old, or better yet, the barrel-proof Thomas H. Handy), and ponder what any of those barrels would do to the profile and complexity here. It needs more unique aspects, not just rote barrel aged approximations. I can't wait to try the straight, unblended version at the taproom in Lake Mills in hopes to achieve something of the sort, because I have a suspicion the blend might be a culprit.

That's all nitpicking, obviously. This is very good, no question. As a big, gooey sweet imperial porter, it hits all the notes with general precision. If you liked Who's You Daddy and The Devil Made Me Do It, you'll like this, as it sits right in the middle.
But it's press description fits my personal preferences so well that anything less than remarkable is a failure.
I want the rye to shine much brighter in all its forms.

Oh...I want to love this, and it is soooo close...

On tap at the Local in Madison, WI. Served in cheap stemmed red wine glass - the sort you would get your basket of Chianti served in if you were dining in a little Italy. Not really appropriate for beer but I was glad that I didn't get a whole pint of this as it is a rather intense brew and I wasn't really prepared for it.

Appearance: Dark brown, near black and nontransparent with a swirly tan head that resembles the Doppler of a hurricane.

Aroma: Sugary booze, powerful roasted malt and twangy rye notes, hints of oily cheese, Irish coffee, and mocha syrup.

Taste: Sweet and boozy. Lots of chocolate in a syrupy or Godiva liquor sort of way. Coffee comes on luscious and mouth coating too with some pretty fresh bean flavor to boot. Rye offer some twang. There is a general fruitiness that I can't yet place but might after more servings.

Mouthfeel: Robust and full bodied. Warming in a major way. Gives off the quality of being thick like a chocolate malt. Mildly biting coffee/oat bitterness offers some balance but not much. This puppy is rich and sweet with lingering sugar notes and lasting alcohol avidity.

Drinkability: This is a treat but I can't see myself having more than one in a sitting.

Style: This doesn't fit any category. I would have called it an American Porter since that American precursor seems to translate as experimental half of the time. Still, Baltic Porter fits alright since this brew is certainly big enough to be one.

A- came to the table a dead black at the bar today, tannish brown head and clear for a dark beer.

S- roasted flavors were pretty strong, malty and a light scent of rye, balanced with hops.

T- first off a very strong malty dark flavor with a chocolate scents and the rye undertone. The rye is surprizingly light for how much they say they put into it, however it is clearly there and blends in spectacularly with the rest of the porter style. very smooth and delicious flavor

M- pretty thick as an imperial porter with rye in it, lingers on the tongue pretty well, and leaves a nice aftertaste. medium carbonation

D- very smooth and i think a great heavy beer.
