Appearance
Opaque black brown with a beautiful thick tan/cream head that's slow to develop but rushes in after the pour. Fun to watch. Drink me!

Aroma
Roasted rye malts, hints of smooth roast coffee and chocolate. A substantial thwack of alcohol to the nose.

Taste
Wow this is a unique porter. A bit hotter on the alcohol than I was expecting due to aging but it works well with the beer and doesn't overpower. The roasted rye character is a unique characteristic of this beer and is very interesting, although it might be a bit much for some. It really cuts through the aftertaste for a new experience. Quite a bit of spice that builds throughout the beer. Some woody profiles towards the end. Not much in the way of hops. I wish the notes of chocolate and coffee had played more prominently into the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel
Minimal carbonation and medium mouthfeel. This is spot on for a porter.

Drinkability/Overall Impression
A little too much rye for me to want to continue drinking this after one. It drinks well enough but the huge flavors of rye and barrel aged alcohol notes beg for a new experience after finishing the glass. The rye malts literally sits on your tonuge until the next sip and are a bit drying. Credit goes where credit's due however and this is a very unique offering from Tyranena that will keep me as a patron of their Brewers Gone Wild series. (1,379 characters)

Appearance: Pours an espresso brown color with a sturdy beige head that throws a few shards of lace around the pint glass

Smell: Coffee, dark chocolate, molasses and charcoal

Taste: Opens with a fruity chocolate element that grows increasingly bitter and spicy by mid-palate, with molasses, vanilla and woody notes joining the fray; after the swallow, the wood and chocolate flavors mellow out the brew, with the spicy rye aspect lingering above

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and some warmth

Drinkability: This beer took a while to settle down; when it was young the flavors were brash and somewhat unbalanced; with age, the flavors have mellowed and come together quite nicely

A-Dark brown with a medium tan head that leaves nice lace.

S-Roasted malt and those "typical" bourbon notes (vanilla/oak/brown sugar). Also hints of chocolate and black coffee.

T-Plenty of malt with muted flavours of coffee and chocolate. Bourbon levels are spot on....not too much, not too little. Very well done.

M-Medium-heavy body with a rich, smooth and creamy feel. Very enjoyable.

D-An excellent sipper. This is a very nicely done BBA brew. Well done Tyranena! (516 characters)

A: Pours dark brown, almost black, with ruby hints when held up to light. Nearly non-existent head which builds only a slight swirl hanging around throughout leaving moderate lacing.

S: Big aroma of roasted coffee and dark chocolate with hints of the wood in there. Some other sweet dark fruits and vanilla also show up in the nose along with dark malts.

T: Roasted malts hit up front on the taste followed closely by roasted coffee and chocolate. Interestingly, I can detect the rye in the taste balanced with the thick sweetness of the caramel and vanilla.

M: To say the mouthfeel is thick would be an understatement as this one is smooth and viscous throughout. Very little carbonation as far as I could tell.

D: This is definitely a sipper - big, thick and syrupy but with a great taste. It's a little to syrupy to top my list of porters, but it's nice. (915 characters)

Very dark in color with just a little brown at the edges, thin coco-y head that forms mainly a ring after a couple of minutes. Chocolate fills the aroma, some milk chocolatiness but more like a bitter dark chocolate, some caramel like whiskey notes, dark roasted grains and some coffee hints. The taste is quite roasty and dark chocolatey, the rye stands out quite a bit. There is quite a bit of balancing sweeter notes as well, caramelly, brown sugar, some boozy whiskey. A big beer, but not quite a motor oil, throat coating consistancy to it, though it gets a little stickier as it warms.

Overall: not one I will rant and rave about but make no mistake, this is a top notch brew. I love barrel aging, and the whiskey doesn't show up quite as much as I would like, but that also makes it much more drinkable than sip-able. I like the hyrid niche that is forming, and these guys do it well, beers with some of the characteristics of big extreme beers, but are toned back enough to still be drinkable. (1,002 characters)

Deep, dark brown body bordering on black, slight ruby highlights if you look for thm. Very thin head with little lacing.

Huge vanilla and alcohol aroma, while pleasant, they mask the baltic porter underneath. I can't pick up any of the rye.

Initial vanilla flavor dominates, then at the tail-end you get a bit of roast, coffee, and slight bitterness. Again, the underlying beer seems to be a little overshadowed by the oak aging.

Mouthfeel is near perfect; smooth, low carbonation, just slightly coating and warming. Get this in a cask and it would be prefect.

A good beer that might just need some aging to mellow out the oak. I would really like to taste this beer w/o the oak aging because a rye porter sounds tasty enough, imo. (735 characters)

A solid pour produces a three finger thick, chocolate stained, cream-tan colored head in my Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass. The beer is a dark, concentrated chocolate color, that shows just a flash of light through it if held up directly to the light. The aroma is interesting, mainly b/c it is a bit different than I was expecting; there is quite a bit of spiciness from the rye character, a touch of peat smoke, notes of concentrated molasses, burnt caramel notes, some aromas similar to prunes left for too long under the broiler and a finish that has been liberally dusted with coffee grounds, toasted whole grain bread and cocoa powder. There is a touch of earthy, slightly moldy, mustiness in the nose, but it seems to only fleetingly be noticeable. The aroma has hardly any overt whiskey barrel notes to it all though. I made the mistake of swirling my beer, the aroma that emanates from the beer is absolutely foul and smells like a mix of rank toe cheese, heavily moldy, stagnant, swamp-water and cheese that has just gone horribly wrong. Luckily this note seems to dissipate and as long as you don't overly disturb the beer is not all that noticeable in the aroma.

Extremely thick and viscous for a beer of this strength and a definite influence of the rye. The beer has a burnt sweetness to it as well as a finish that provides ample roast grain character in the form of dark cocoa powder, lightly burnt grain husks, dark roast coffee and lightly astringent roast grain. This has quite a bit of tartness to it as well that seems to be product of the carbonation, in fact a swirl of the beer seems to confirm this (even though it releases a noxious cloud of swamp gas) as it becomes much less tart once more of the carbonation is released. Cocoa and coffee notes seem to play a big role in defining the flavor profile, though the texture is heavily influenced by the viscous rye.

It is interesting how much the tartness contributed by the carbonation is played up in this beer. Something about the ingredient mix seems to accentuate the light acidity that is normally contributed by carbonic acid. I am really surprised how un-dominant the Rye-Whisky character is here, though I think the beer is probably better for it being subtle, at least in my book. The aroma has quite a Jekyll and Hyde character to it as well; as long as you don't disturb it, the nose can be decent if not a bit interesting, but if roused it gets aggressively foul really quickly. As a whole I would say the aroma is average; it is decent to enjoyable or on the flip side fairly repugnant. If I hadn't ever roused the beer I would have been reasonably happy with this beer, but then I would have been stuck with the slightly out of place, accentuated carbonic acid bite. Basically beware the aroma on this beast, but it still is a pretty enjoyable experience over all and I would definitely have this beer again. (2,897 characters)

A- This beer pours a deep opaque brown body with a thin web of white had the develops into a thick foam of light tan. There is a soft carbonation of tiny bubbles that glide of the side of the glass. The head last for a few sips.

S- The smell of old wet wood has a slight sweet nutty quality and a dry burnt caramel note.

T- The taste of soft brown malt has a soft roasted bitterness to it and a slight spicy bite. The notes of soft wet wood and very faint bourbon hint give way to a slight salty roasted malt finish.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slightly full yet slippery texture and an almost peroxide fizz at the finish. There is no alcohol heat noticed.

D- This beer has a mellow soft roasted malt flavor and not really the punch in the mouth that I would expect from a beer by this name. (838 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a chalice. Thanks to tizzod, midwest beer guide.

Inky black, just a thin rim of beige foam is raised and remains a ring. Wispy clouds of lace.

The aroma immediately brings chocolate and whiskey to mind, with a heapin' helping of oaky vanilla. Creamy, yet spicy and crisp, cool, perhaps some alcohol heat in the mouth...yet what a sucker i am for these deliciously gigantic imperial porters. All bitter dark chocolate enrobing a shot of rye whiskey, a dessert, but sweetness perfectly modulated by spicy rye sourness and black coffee/cocoa nib bitterness. For sipping in th eevening, this style can't be beat. rye and the woody tannins imparted by the barrel add up to an excellent beer i will gladly enjoy again.

I received this one as an extra in a trade recently and have been waiting to give it a try. I have thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the lineup so far, and I was hoping this one would be no exception, as I am a huge fan of the style. The typical 12oz bottle was served slightly bellow cellar temp and then allowed to warm up in an over-sized wine glass. The pour was nice with a deep dark brown, essentially black liquid being presented in front of me. Really no light going through at all. A nice hard pour left behind about two inches of sticky side glass lace that really just clung to the glass and gave it a good thick look.

The aroma was sweet, lots of molasses and hints of vanilla being noticed right away on this one. Not as much in the nose as far as the Whiskey barrel aging as I thought there would be. Nice chocolate and coffee notes, as well as a decent amount of roasted malts. The flavor followed suit right away, with a rich mixture of molasses and vanilla, Hints of coffee coming through and some nice, dark fruit notes, plums perhaps? The finish was loaded with coffee tones, with a nice touch of bitterness and a great follow through that left that nice semi-sweet, plum lace molasses flavor lingering for the rest of the night. The feel was a touch thin to be honest, but nothing terribly distracting, just thought it would have been a bit bigger. It was still very smooth and creamy, just needed that little bit extra to throw it over the top. Nice smooth drinkable Baltic porter though, I am not sure what the BAV was, but it sure did not come off very high at all. I could have easily thrown down a second one with no trouble at all.

Overall not a bad beer, but needed just that little bit extra to make it really great. There is no doubt I would love to try this one again, and in fact would definitely purchase it if I saw it. (1,851 characters)

120z bottle poured into my Duvel chalice.

This beer poured out a deep, dark brown/black color. There was very minimal head but what little there was was a muddy brown color. As soon as I poured I got hit in the schnoz with lots of molasses, whiskey, burnt coffee, and dark chocolate notes. I'm salivating like Pavlov's dog right about now! My first sip greets me with an extremely dominant dark chocolate taste, followed up by a sweeter cocoa flavor. I also taste a little bit of black licorice. This doesn't seem as thick as most other porters I've had, but still excellent nonetheless! I'll seek this out and make sure to send a few along in trades as extras! (662 characters)

Pours dark with about an inch of light chocolate colored foam.

Very interesting aroma, rye and chocolate right away with hints of cocoa, citrus, roasted and slightly charred malts, and a subtle whiskey overtone. Nicely done. After the beer settles it has a dry chocolate aroma and it reminds me of chocolate corn flakes cereal. There's also some cherries, vanilla, and malted milk.

Taste is very similar to the aroma, chocolate, dry rye, coffee, hints of whiskey, and also some citrus and tangy flavors in the finish.

Seems a tad thin on the palate but still pretty good.

12oz. stubby brown bottle poured into a snifter. No dating.

A: Pours pitch black, no lighting. A rough pour gets a big ass head in the snifter with some light cascading. Nice sticky lacing.

S: Actually a bit light on the smell. Some cola and grape-y notes. Maybe a bit of coffee. Very subtle.

T/M: I definitely get some of the rye alcohol. Not overpowering or even potent but just a nice twist to things. Rich malts all over the place. More from the nose but with a touch more coffee and some sweet milky and chocolate notes. And my favorite part about Baltic Porters... the rich, creamy, velvety, smooth body. Not too heavy, but just right.

D: Goes down easy and lends a great twist on an already interesting style. (754 characters)

A-Deep black with slightest light coming through. Tan head was never really present but formed slight ring.

S-Nice notes of sweetly roasted malts. The oak is present but not overpowering. Wonderful overall aroma but I wish there was a bit more going on.

T-A sharp dark fruit is met with a dry roasted malt flavor. Big hits of cocoa. The rye is subdued in the background, but it seems to be prefectly balanced. The oak brings out a very nice vanilla profile. The whiskey aging is much better balanced than many other barrel aged beers on the market.

M-Big depth in the mouthfeel. Big sweetness up front with the rye making its presence in the finish. Wonderfully dry.

D-At room temp this stuff goes down like water! A memorable beer for sure. (745 characters)

Pours a nice black color, nice carbonation, nice little creamy tan head, which does leave some sticky lacing around. The nose is malty, very slight whiskey, toffee/coffee, and caramel. The taste is slightly sweet (very nice), vanilla, malts, whiskey (nice touch), and caramel. Medium body, the alcohol is hidden very well. Very drinkable, this is a tasty one, thanks Eric. (415 characters)

Flows from the bottle completely black with a thick khaki head. Smells of roasty toasty oak, chocolate and coffee. Not getting any rye here really, though there's some faint sweet-sourness cropping up as it warms. The sourness and spice does crop up in the flavor profile though, reflecting the sweet, almost lactic finish to this smooth, creamy baltic porter. Prune, boozy cherries, peppery esters, faint smokiness and cocoa round out the character. All in all, not much of a departure from style standards, I think I expected a bit more deviation, a bit more evidence of the aging. Not wowed, but quite good nonetheless. Being my first from Tyranena, I wouldn't mind exploring more from the brewery. Cheers to autumnaldave for the introduction. (746 characters)

Looks dark brown at a glance, but glows like port when held to the light. Not much head to speak of here.

Smells of milk chocolate and maraschino cherries with a touch of sour booze and a hint of coffee.

Tastes much like cocoa again, but more like chocolate pudding. There really isn't much here other than a milky chocolate blended into an ambiguous boozy dryness. In the finish, a lactic sweetness coats my mouth and I'm left with a touch of black licorice. Looking over some of the other reviews to see what I'm missing, I agree that there may be a bit of peanut butter here, but I still say that this one is a bit dull.

Feels sticky and huge with a ton of thickening micro-bubbles.

I think I missed the point of this one. Perhaps a year in the cellar may bring this one around. (823 characters)

a: head is minimal and disappears with a quickness, the beer is a deep chestnut brown in color

s: big creamy roasted barley aroma, full and rich, semisweet chocolate, nice sweet oak-vanilla though the bourbon is limited, a little spicy rye in the background, hops very light and on the earthy side

m: low-medium carbonation, full creamy body

t: full with dark roasted barley and dark chocolates that stick around well into the finish; certainly not the bourbon-wood bomb I'd hoped for...doesn't come through much at all really save for around the edges, but it works; earthy hops, a little rye spice, a little boozy

d: easy enough

Shazzam! Mmmm.... Wow, killer beer. Poured with a fine creamy and reminiscent of angelfood candy. Full. rich, and very balanced aroma and flavor. Even maybe a little too subtle. Extremely drinkable. Fine quality. This could easily be served in a gourmet meal along side a sumptuous seared rib eye steak. The whiskey characteristics show up only in the highlights of the beer which is fine by me. Good beer to serve your significant other and prep em for some lust. heh heh. cheers. (481 characters)

Best Baltic porter that I've ever had, easily...

Pitch black with a huge creamy head... Looks like an Imperial Stout..

Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, whiskey, and oak...delectable...

Smooth and silky, this is everything I look for in a porter... Loaded with dark rich flavors... Incredibly easy drinking....

Pours a dark brown with a thin but dense tan head that slowly fades into a thin cap. Nice leopard-spot tracing rims the glass as the level drops.
S-Aroma is predominantly sour rye flour with back tones of chocolate, coffee, and faint raisin and fig.
T-Attack is strong and of bitter rye with coffee that flows smoothly into a midpalate that brings out faint whiskey and more bitter coffee and liberally toasted malts. I'm picking up some of the rustic earthy tones I've found characteristic of the last two varieties from this brewery, again, not sure if this is from specialty malts, or the yeast. It's a very pleasant trait, but not for the squeamish...you either like it or you don't. Finish is surprisingly clean after all the powerful and strong flavors take a backseat to a smooth vanilla texture, and crisp slightly hoppy ending. The lingering aftertaste with its cafe-mocha notes is excellent.
M-Perfect. The smooth and silky heavier-side-of-medium body is just right to carry all of the flavors, and the carbonation is right at the ideal point...not too strong, but present enough to lend the right amount of backbone to a porter that packs a lot of flavor. This stuff is almost creamy.
D-I need to get my ass to this brewery. It's a new favorite of mine, and it's not far away. So far, three for three, and I would gladly spend my hard-earned money on a six-pack or a growler if I can get a hold of one. (1,414 characters)

Dark brown, almost black with a small tan head. Sweet smell with some toasty undertones, although not very strong. Roasted taste with apparent vanilla undertones. Chocolate flavor becomes more apparent along with hints of whiskey as the beer is consumed. Roasted malts very apparent in the aftertaste that lingers for quite some time.
This is a well crafted beer that does not disappoint. (389 characters)

This beer pours a very dark brown, almost black, color. The head is half an inch in height, tan in color, and recedes rather quickly into almost no lacing (which seems to be standard with whiskey aged beers). The aroma is of chocolate, whiskey, coffee, and roasted malt. The taste of roasted malt, and whiskey, with more whiskey and coffee in the finish. The mouthfeel is full bodied with an appropriately low level of carbonation. Overall, I love how the whiskey is balanced into the aroma, but do not like how it dominates the taste. Maybe some age would help with this. I guess I could drink this again when in the mood for something sharp. (643 characters)

Pours black with a small tan head, a lot of lacing left.

Smell: Rye, cocoa, black patent, noble hops, and a bit of coffee and whiskey.

Taste: Chocolate and rye mostly, hints of vanilla and dark fruit. The whiskey is pretty subdued,when it even shows up. Maybe they should have went with a 50/50 blend. Thick, creamy, full bodied.

I really like this but think High Class Broad was a little better(from my limited Tyranena experience.) I'd like a little more whiskey and if it wasn't mentioned I'd have no idea this had any barrel aging involved. (549 characters)

Fantastic brew!

I'm not much of a porter drinker, so take this all with a grain ;-)

Nice, dark & rich color as to be expected.

The smell is wonderful. My favorite part of this brew. Malty, bourbon-chocolate. Very nice. Very pleasant.

The taste is very nicely rounded if not particularly expectional, but everything blends nicely; the malt, chocolate & coffee notes countered with that pleasant bourbon.

Overall a very nice brew. I'm thouroughlyl enjoying it as is the wifey who first turned her nose up at it... (516 characters)
