Had this in a tulip glass. Bottled on date Sept. 15, 2013.

The beer pours with little foam action, and only a white ring covers the top of the pumpkin ale. The opaque body is a glowing ruddy-orange with maple syrup highlights.

I could smell the spicing as soon as I cracked this one, and it was enticing! Very sweet nose with graham cracker, white bread, candied ginger, nutmeg, and brown sugar. Some very subtle clove also shows up with some agitation.

The palate of flavors begin with the graham cracker quality meshing with some earthiness and a subtle metallic flavor. The malt is more wheaty on the palate as well, not nearly as sweet. It is here that the allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon really come out in the finish, with a touch of vanilla. At first brush, this is disappointing because of the decadent nature of the nose, but it grows on the drinker.

Watery and slick over the tongue, with a decent and medium heft. A little dry with average flavor retention on the cheeks.

Painted Ladies is a worthy pumpkin ale that is well spiced and graced with a dessert-y pumpkin pie nose. Usually, highly spiced pumpkin's have an issue of being far too thin to support the flavors, but Tyranena's offering has no such problem thankfully. I would certainly have this pumpkin again!

Aroma: Sweet maltiness. Definite nutmeg up front with hint of ginger and allspice. An earthy note present as it warms, but not extreme.

Appearance: Crystal clear copper color. Large off-white head that is very persistent.

Flavor: Sweet and malty but not cloying. As with aroma, the nutmeg is front and center, with an allspice/clove "burn" coming up last. This has a slightly astringent earthy or musty finish, but doesn't detract from overall enjoyment too much. I think that flavor is the actual pumpkin in the beer. The spicing on this one is borderline too high.

Overall: Not a bad beer. Probably the best beer I've had from Tyranena in a while. I honestly had kind of written them off over the past few years after I'd tried a couple of duds. This one is high on the spices, so if you hate them then you likely won't like this beer!

A-Clear amber, not much carbonation, one finger head.

S-Very spice heavy, lots of cinnamon, tad bit of pumpkin but not much,

T-Like the nose, spice heavy. Some pumpkin in the finish. Not much else, no bitterness.

M-Light, not much carbonation, tad watery as well.

O-Another run of the mill pumpkin beer, that being said run of the mill means really good to me because of the style.

Pours a crystal clear burnt orange color with a minimal off-white head that soon settles into a ring of soapy froth around the periphery. Huge pumpkin spice notes are evident in the nose, featuring cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as a present caramel sweetness.

Unfortunately, the taste doesn't quite live up to the pleasing aroma. The sweetness is cloying and disjointed from the spices, and the body is too thin to provide a suitable substrate for either. There's also a surprising amount of alcohol on the back end, along with a rote, resinous bitterness. The carbonation lends a creamy quality that's pleasant, but that's about the most positive thing I can say about this beer.

I have a fair amount of respect for Tyranena, but this is not one of their better offerings. On the whole, it comes off as something of a naive and unwieldy attempt at the style--sugar and spice, but not so much nice, unfortunately.

12 oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Cloudy orange/brown liquid. Thick light brown head that lasts for a long while. Looks kind of like apple cider.

S: Smells like a creamy pumpkin pie....very very nice. Lots of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of ginger.

T: The pumpkin is a bit more toned-down in the taste. The pumpkin is very apparent up front, but it gives way to cinnamon and nutmeg. There is also a strong malt taste near the end of the drink, too. The amber ale really shines through. The pumpkin spices accompany the beer taste instead of completely overpowering it.

M: Really, REALLY smooth. Medium body....goes down way too easy for a 7.5% beer.

O: My second favorite pumpkin beer (behind the all-mighty Whole Hog.) This one is kind of a like a pumpkin/amber ale shandy. The beer comes through a lot more than other pumpkin beers, which I consider a good thing. This beer is a perfect beer for crisp, cool, clear autumn nights.
