Most recent bottling, from spring 2013. Tasted 7 July 2013.

Pours a very muddy amber brown with reddish tones. Translucent at the edges, though. Just a thin layer of off-white head, despite an aggressive pour. Not bad, but not great either.

Smell is interesting. Wood, earth, smoke, and vanilla. I only get a touch of the bourbon, and if it didn't say so on the bottle, I wouldn't guess this was bourbon-barrel aged. It's nice, but the pieces don't really come together, and I'm left with a bunch of spare parts rather than a working whole. Kinda like a woody smoky scotch ale with a dash of vanilla.

Taste is leaps and bounds beyond the smell. Starts with a lovely earthy/sweet scotch ale, then bursts through with a grainy-sweet bourbon barrel pop. Has just a touch of that character that the best bourbon-barrel-aged beers have, that rich sweet kaboom that always wows me. Here it's not quite so potent or impressive, but half-way to amazing is still pretty darn good.

Feel is good. Medium-bodied, persisting as a slick watery film. Carbonation starts out low, then surges up to sting the roof of my mouth.

The flavor carries this beer, as everything else about it is good but not outstanding. I'm delighted by the varied sweet flavors, from the malts, the bourbon, and a little extra from the combination. Good stuff.

Reviewing Shaggin' In The Woods from Tyranena Brewing Company out of Lake Mills, Wisconsin.

Score: 82

2013 vintage bottle served in an Upland snifter and enjoyed on 05/07/13. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Dark bourbon color, pours a thin layer of tan head. Poor lacing and retention. 3.5/5

Smell: Caramel, cocoa, fruity malt and oak. Faint vanilla, hops too. 4/5

Taste: Caramel, malt and oak. Sweet (but not bold) bourbon flavor with vanilla. Not complex at all. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, low-medium carbonation. Malty and sweet. Way too thin for what it's trying to offer; it's practically watery. 1.5/5

Overall: Solid flavor and aroma, marred by a horrible mouthfeel. This brew lacks any semblance of viscosity.

Cost: $9.99 for a four pack.
