Bottled dated on 2-9-2011 putting this at just over a year old.
Pouring into a 3 Floyds pint glass. Dark brown/black in color with a crop of creamy medium tan foam. Lacing cling to the glass, good retention.
Cocoa powder and a hint of molasses in the initial aromas. Dusting of black pepper spice. Well toasted bready malt and a caramel sweetness arriving later.
Upfront charcoal smoke yields to a dark, bittersweet chocolate in the middle. Modestly malty sweet on the back-end. Bitterness is moderate-high with the dark malts appearing to contribute some of the character. Bitter, over-extracted espresso lingering into the finish.
Nearly oily, medium-full bodied with a moderate-light amount of carbonation. Slight harshness from the roasted malts detracting from the experience.
Bitter chocolate and coffee can sometimes work well together but there's somewhat of a clash going on here. A tad harsh for the style. Not sure if age is playing a factor here but I'd like a shift away from the dark/bitter roasty malts towards some sweetness to help increase session enjoyment.

Tyranena Down 'N Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.
Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a CBS snifter. Served chilled...
A) Deep dark brown... A nice little tan head, that settles down to wispy patches. Some traction on the snifter here.
S) A good amount of roasted malt, some chocolate, and a little coffee with a splash of cream.
T) The flavor also provided a whole lot of roast, just a little chocolate. You get the oatmeal. I found this to be pretty bitter on the backend. I would have like a little more sweetness in the flavor.
M) Medium body with mild carbonation. Pretty smooth feel, but could have been a little more supple.
O) Pretty good.... I could see how this would do well with some barrel aging. Too bad I didn't score a bottle.
