This pours a dark amber color with a slight, foamy head. The aroma slightly hoppy but otherwise not much going on. The taste has quite a bit of a bitter bite. The spruce tip adds an extra bite that is very dry and bitter. This is interesting, but certainly not a very appealing taste to me. At least Point is to explore with other ingredients.

12 oz twist-off bottle poured into an imperial pint.
5.5% ABV, 45 IBUs

A - Nearly amber-hued, this bright and clear beer retains it's well-formed off-white head nicely while draping sheets of lace on the pint!

S - Cascade hops generate a timid aroma of citrus and tropical fruitiness followed by a faint kiss of pine and sweet caramel malts in the background but with a name like Spruce Tip IPA, I expected a bit more hops and woodsy characteristics so far but it doesn't smell bad.

T - Well, don't let the mellow aroma fool you, the beer packs a bit more punch in flavor with semi-sweet caramel malts laying a nice foundation for plenty of cascade hops to build off of. Spruce remains subdued in comparison to the citrus and fruity hop profile but works in a smooth earthiness for good balance.

M - While this IPA has a smooth medium body, carbonation dances on the tongue with vigor, ending with hoppy dry bitterness that leaves a lasting impression.

O - There aren't a ton of spruce or pine-brewed beers out there but, of the ones I've experienced, Point's Spruce Tip IPA falls into the more cautious realm. Earthy, pine-like spruce makes a brief appearance in aroma and mild contribution to the flavor seemingly acting as balance rather than a showcased flavor but the beer is tasty regardless!

poured 12oz bottle into snifter.

Light clear bronze with a 2 finger head. Scents of sweet caramel malts and hops of pine and spruce. Flavor is hops of pine and hints of spruce. There is a caramel malt backbone that is not too sweet. Mouthfeel is light and carbonated. Overall this is a good IPA that has a decent amount of pine hop flavor.

Pours amber with a fizzy head that doesn't last long. Minimal lacing.

The smell is of caramel with some spruce.

Caramel is upfront but some spruce and a nod towards citrus come through to add bitterness.

A bit spritzy. Thin for an IPA, but not too well. The body works adequately for the overall character of this brew.

Not much of an IPA, but not a bad beer.

From the mixed 12 pack in longneck bottles poured in to my Samuel Smiths pint glass. The beer is a dark copper with a decent and sticky beige head.

Nose of caramel malts and pine. It is fresh and inviting but not overpowering.

Taste is on the sweeter side for an IPA. Lot of caramel and slow poke sucker taste backed with some pine resin. I think the pine taste is more from the cascades than the spruce tips, but who knows. Either way it is a nice easy drinker.

The mouth has some heft and a bit of slickness.

12oz bottle with no date. From the IPA sampler pack

Typical IPA look, small head, clear, looks good. Smell is spruce tree and sweet green apple. The spruce tips and the piney hops work great together. This tastes like a good homebrew with spruce added. Bitter with the right amount of sweet malt.

Pours a huge, dense head with great persistence. A great, spruce aroma with pine hoppiness. Golden-amber color. Starts with bitterness and an almost floral spruce flavor. Peaks at a medium bitterness, pine near the end.

This is really nice. The spruce is very subdued compared to the Black Husky Spruce IPA (my favorite), but this is still excellent.

I had some of this tonight to cut the grease and richness of the Scotch eggs my wife made for supper, which it did, exceptionally well. My wife's cooking requires pairing with the best beers I can get my hand on and this IPA can stand up to that test. Lately I've been stepping on the scale more regularly as summer is coming on and I want to look good in my summer outfits. Sometimes I think, "I could be skinny if my wife were a lousy cook. But where would be the fun in that?"

Overall, I find the spruce flavors refreshing and natural.

I've always thought spruce tips add a candied like sweetness to the beers I've had and this one exhibits that characteristic as well but it is soft.

A sticky sweet aroma of caramel, toffee and hard candies...some light pine....also a little light citrus like oranges..

While the aroma is sweet and fruity the taste is nicely balanced with a pine like hop bitterness..earthy....slightly dry on the finish....light side of medium bodied.

All things considered this is a solid, unique IPA.
