Nice reddish tawny pour. Thin head, nice lacing. Slightly toasty aroma, a touch vegetal.

Good toasty flavor, basic but nice.
Nice session beer given to me in a fine birthday 8-pack.

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear amber brown with a two finger dirty white head. Head takes some time to dissipate but does not leave any appreciable lacing. Slight carbonation bubbling up from the bottom makes this one look pretty decent.

Smell: Sweet malts and a strange musky hoppiness.

Taste: Rather than being a malt driven brown ale (which is really the ONLY way a brown ale should be), this one is lacking in malts and too strong in hops. The malt backbone is really thin and flavorless, meaning any hopping in the beer comes out too strong, adding an uncharacteristic spiciness to the beer, especially on the very front end.

Mouthfeel: Thin.

Overall: One of the worse brown ales I've had.

Dessert: taste lingers with mild-moderate lingering aftertaste, that leaves me "indifferent"

Having drank Cabin Fever brown ale from New Holland prior to, just not desirable flavorwise.

Part of the winter variety pack:

Pours light to medium brown with a rather quickly vanishing head. Only a few dots of lacing stick.

The smell is of dark toffee, hint of nuts and slight roast.

The taste is of sweet toffee and a hint of subtle nuts, The sweetness is balanced by mild roast and a bitter-ish touch in the finish.

It is lighter in body than expected, could be creamier, but it is smooth and easy to drink.

A decent, though "forgettable" brown ale - it has a nice malty character - though not strong. I would say it is between a traditional English-style Brown and a less hoppy American brown. It's decent.

Sampling right now on 11/6/13. Chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler. Poured into a brandy snifter.

Pours a nice dark brown in color with a very tiny head. Perfect carbonation. Very little (if any actually) lacing was seen with each sip. The aroma is of of some dark roasted grains with burnt sugar. The taste is about the same with a touch of caramel. No harsh aftertaste. Overall, a very decent brew .

A - An aggressive pour unleashes a tall light khaki head on this beer which lasts and lasts, covering the pint above the gorgeous clear crimson copper-colored beer with thick lace.

S - Burley Brown combines the dry, mildly astringent aroma of toasted malt and biscuit character with subtle caramel and toffee sweetness for a balanced and inviting smelling brown.

T - Mild earthy hops cut through this brown's malt base of toasted wheat bread crust and suggestions of caramel and toffee for a balanced brown finish.

M - Burley Brown is anything but burley as this light-bodied beer crosses the palate with lasting, faintly metallic dryness and a smooth finish.

O - One of Points more balanced and thorough beers, Burley Brown does a good job of having different malt nuances such as toasted dryness and caramel sweetness play off one another for a very easy drinking brown ale.

Poured into a perfect pint.

2.75 A: Clear, light amber brown color. Two fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is below average and very little lacing is left.

3.0 S: Toasty with nuttiness and caramel. Pretty standard nose for a brown, but this falls squarely at average.

3.0 T: Taste is about in line with the nose. Toasty, nutty, caramel. Neutral malt sweetness to balance. Grainy.

3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy. Good enough here.

3.0 D: Pretty average, run-of-the-mill brown. That isn't to say it isn't good.

Point "Burly brown" brown ale: Pours a huge, whipped, light tan head that is unexpectedly persistent. Floral hops overlaid upon a sweet malt aroma; though the confluence almost smells sour. Deep burnt umber, ruby color is gorgeous. Starts with a dry hop bitterness on top of sweet malt that has a caramel like aspect, a quick flash of metallic (not in a bad way), and the bitterness dominates to a medium bitterness. Finish is malty with notes of caramel between the hop bitterness.

Okay, so I *HATE* this style of bier...but this is impressive. It's very well balanced. I love how the hop bitterness plays against the sweetness of the malt. Normally, either the hops are too bitter or the malt is too caramel, but this just nails that balance for me.

A - Pours a nice dark brown colour, finger of head which quickly dissipates leaving no real lacing.

S - Scent is mild and metallic with hints of honey, burnt sugar and a touch of caramel.

T - Again, rather mild, but a sweet caramel flavour dominates alongside hints of vanilla and cream. Toasted biscuit and bready flavours linger.

M - A tad thin, smooth and a touch of dryness on the finish.

O - An easy drinking brown ale, but nothing spectacular or overly memorable.

Up in WI last week to visit family and my brother had a mixed 12 pack from these guys. This was the first of them I've tried. 12oz bottle, poured into a tall pilsner glass as that was all that was available at the time. Pours a clear dark brown. Thick 2-finger head atop. Nose was sweet with dark malts, grains, caramel candy. Semisweet toffee, breads, mild finish. Mild bitterness present, as this is sweet as it's meant to be. This is a good beer and it really hits the spot. This is a simple style that I don't visit enough. I like it.

Pours a brilliant brown color with amber highlights. A fairly spotty one finger cream head dissipates with no lace.

Toasted caramel malt, nuts, and a hint of floral hop are evident in the aroma. Malts definitely dominate.

Flavor begins with sweet toasted malt, caramel, and bread crust. There's a slight citrus note mid palate, before the dry, barely bitter finish. Tea-like herbs emanate as it warms.

Body is medium with moderate carbonation and a hint of astringency.

Overall, a decent beer. Not a standout, but fairly drinkable.

Bottle poured into a glass. Part of sampler box.

A: Just the right brown hue. If you can imagine a pane of glass that's the color of milk chocolate, and throw a little red in there, that's about right.

S: Mild sweetness.

T: Very smooth. Malt, with just a hint of roasting. I didn't get too much else.

M: Medium, a bit on the lighter side perhaps.

O: A surprise from the sampler box. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it's very smooth. It's almost like a lighter 2012.

I bought a 12pk sampler of Stevens Point Beer for $11.99 from Woodman's in Janesville, WI in Spring 2011.

Pours a dark brown color with just a slight fluffy, off white head. Picking up scents of hazelnuts, roasted malts, and caramel malts. Taste is rather smooth and sweet. Can really taste the caramel and sugars. After taste is quite robust and flavorful. Rather tasty and flavorful. A decent dark beer.

Surpringly flavorful with a 'true' malt taste and refreshing dry finish, Burly Brown makes for a very enticing Brown Ale that has more in common with norther English Brown Ales than American.

While pouring the staple brown color, the beer carries deep amber highlights as well as a slightly off white froathy head that lingers the sessiona and leaves even pockets of foam behind with each sip. A firm and inviting Brown Ale.

Malty rich aromas of whipped cream, caramel, grain, and medium woods all yield a slight nutty and chocolate scent. Light butterscotch, but no real fruity ester profile or spiciness- the beer's aroma remains true to Browns by focusing on malt depth and little distraction elsewhere.

Firmly malted to taste as well as chocolate, nuts, medium toast, bread crust, and lightly caramelized sugars provide the bulk of the flavor matrix. Ligthly toasted woods, toffee and a slight grassy taste balances the sweeter malt base, but not with the zeal that's expected from American hops in American-style Brown Ales. Again, with a cleanly malted profile and just enough balance from hops, the beer remains void of the distraction of fruitiness or spiciness from yeast that would have muddled the waters.

Medium and almost full- the higher levels of carbonation seem to reinforce the notion of dryness and lightness, albeit releasing a carbonic bite that brings undue attention to the grainy mid palate. Lightly grassy and with a dry woody character the finish is lightly powdery, minty-cool, and overall refreshing.

Burly Brown seems more similar to Sam Smith's Nut Brown and Wychwood Hobgoblin than more appropriate American Brown Ales like Bell's Best Brown or Sierra Nevada's Tumbler. But it's an easy drinking and palatable Brown Ale regardless of the origins for style or influence of recipe.

Poured into a standard pint glass.

A=Looked like Coca-Cola at first, but then held up to the light to reveal a reddish brown hue. Creamy, eggshell color, 3 finger head that lasted over a minute.

S=Syrupy sweet...like molasses and maple syrup.

T=A brown sugar sweetness, with a bourbon backdrop and you can taste the alcohol, too. Cola flavoring, with somewhat of a nutty presence...almonds and cashews, perhaps. The alcohol and bourbon dominate, however.

M=Slightly above average...a tad lighter than I expected. Sweetness and above average carbonation prevent this from being a session beer.

O=This beer grew on me a bit, but I found it too sweet...if it were for hops, you'd swear you were drinking a flat cola.

I poured this one into a glass stein.

Appearance- A dark pecan body with plenty of bubbles seen rising to the, at one point, two-finger, khaki head. It receded to about a half-finger and left some lace. The head is more dense than airy.

Smell- Some chalky, roasted malt in here. It is not really sweet, more biscuit-like. It is really subtle.

Taste- Hmmm...The flavors are really light. First I can tell that there is almost no hops to this one, and honestly, as a brown, I am quite all right with this.

Secondly, the malt notes that are here are so incredibly hard to distinguish, mainly because the flavors are a touch above "not there". Maybe some roasted malt, a little coffee flavor to it, and some bread malt that hits on the finish.

It tastes all right; it certainly is not off putting. However, it just does not taste like much of anything.

Mouth feel- This aspect of the beer is fine. It is very creamy and smooth, easy to drink. A light-medium body, but not inappropriate.

Overall- Just a really ho-hum beer. If it was on tap I might get it again just because it is so easy to drink, and that is not always the easiest thing to find in a beer. Now if only they could work on giving this guy some flavor, they might be on to something!

I picked up a single of Stevens Point Burly Brown a few days ago at The Lager Mill for $1.19. I wanted to try a beer from a brewery I have never heard of so when I saw this beer on the shelf I figured I would take a chance on this brewery and see how their Brown Ale stacks up. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A- The label on this beer looks pretty good, I like the drawing of a brown bear trying to catch a trout in a stream. The label made this beer a little difficult to look up, it said James Page brewery on it but it's made by Stevens Point, its a little confusing, you would think they would want you to easily know they were the ones who made it. It poured a deep copper/amber color that was bordering on being brown with two and a half fingers worth of white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end.

S- This beer has hardly any aroma and what little aroma that is there is just a light amount of lightly toasted malts and some malty sweetness, nothing else seemed to show up at all. This has to be the lightest aroma I have encountered in a Brown Ale, pretty disappointing.

T- I was hoping the flavor of this beer would have more life in it then the aroma had, but that wasn't the case at all. This beer basically tastes like slightly malted water. The only thing I get in the taste is a really slight glimpse of some lightly toasted malts that hardly show up and that's pretty much all the flavor I got out of this beer. There was no hops or any other types of flavor in this beer, this tasted more watery then a Bud Select 55, I didn't even think that was possible.

M- Watery, medium light bodied, with a good medium amount of carbonation that makes this beer a little fizzy.

Overall I was pretty disappointed with this beer, I thought this beer was pretty bad and it's the worst Brown Ale I have had to date. This beer is nothing like what a good Brown Ale should be like, it hardly had any flavor and it was very watery, there was nothing there to hold my attention. What I liked most about this beer was the appearance, it was a little light for its style, but it was still the best thing about this beer. The thing I liked the least about this beer was the taste, as dull as the aroma was, the taste was even duller, nowhere near what a Brown Ale should be like. This beer is light and flavorless so it could be chugged down pretty fast, but with so little flavor I have no motivation to want to session this beer. I will not be buying this again and I am pretty sure I would turn this down if offered one. I don't recommend this beer to anyone, it's a very poor representation of the style and miles away from what it should be. I don't see how any brewery can taste this, put their name on it, and call it a Brown Ale, in my opinion that's a disgrace to the style, the brewers at Stevens Point need to drink a Tumbler so they can see what a real Brown Ale tasted like. After finding out this beer is from Stevens Point instead of James Page I have noticed that I tried their 2012 Black Ale and that was much closer to Brown Ale then this beer was, they should just drop this beer all together and stick with the 2012 Black Ale cause this beer isn't cutting it. After trying this beer I will be thinking twice before buying another beer from this brewery.

A-Clear brown with red tint, tight tan foam that sticks around for half a bottle's pour.
S-Sweet malt is dominant, a slight toasted aroma also present. It does have a bit of corn adjunct aroma which I do not care for.
T-Toasted malt character (nutty, caramel) is strongest taste present. Hops are quiet but help give a nice finish with just a hint of resiny bite.
M-Smooth with moderate carbonation. Crisp, quick finish.
D-Very smooth, good for style.
O-A smooth brown that is nicely done-nothing stands out with this one but very easy to drink with a nice righ toasted malt flavor. A nice brown ale.

A six-pack of various brews from the wife for our 2nd anniversary and I pull out Stevens Point's Burly Brown first. Labeled as an American brown ale, the brew pours dark brown with mahogany-red spots towards the bottom.

Slightly transparent for a dark brown beer; noticeably carbonated. Slim head, but a nice rim grips the edges.

Smells of caramel with traces of diacetyl; buttery. A smidget of booziness in the nose as it warms up. Tastes brown! Attenuated, but for the purpose of rendering this brew sessionable. Hops to balance. Give this one a try. On tap anyone?

12oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Very dark, clear ruby-brown body underneath a finger of dense, creamy tan foam that reactivates upon a quick swirl of the tulip. Ok retention and lacing. Not bad at all.

S: Very sweet and toasty – crème brulee; overly-sugared iced coffee; molasses. There’s pretty good intensity, but I’m a bit worried about a potential lack of balance. No hops are noticeable.

T: Follows the nose precisely. Very, very sweet, with slightly burned brown sugar being the dominant note. Maybe a hint of coffee. Sticky-sweet finish. This could definitely use some more hops to keep the sweetness in check, but it’s still not too bad.

M: Sticky medium body, tons of soft carbonation. A bit overcarbonated for the style, but not offensively so.

O: I’m certainly not a huge fan of this beer, but it’s at least one of Point’s better offerings. I really like some of the toasted caramel flavors that the specialty malts provide, and just wish that there were at least a little bit of balance to create some complexity. As it is, this is certainly a bit low on the drinkability scale – but hey, better burly than boring.

Wasn't expecting much from this one, but I do love me some Point brews, and the taste wowed me.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: I'd have to agree with others: A Newcastle brown look.

Smell: Nutty, malty.

Taste: Mmmm. Now this is a brown ale I can appreciate. Similar to Southern Pecan but not as dominant as Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale. Smooth, nutty, goes down good. More, please.

Mouthfeel: Medium, just rolls on the tongue.

Overall: A very decent brown ale. Congrats, Point Brewery. I plan to consume more of this little surprise.

Appearance- Nice color: Dark Chocolate brown, similar to cola. But, very little head which dissipates quickly. Also leaves little to no lacework.

Smell- Nice, chocolate, nutty, coffee, sweet aroma. a little too subtle, however, I like a much more forward smell.

Taste- A nice brown ale that has a very nutty taste. There does however seem to be a lingering aftertaste that isn't quite as pleasant as the front. almost a soapy aftertaste.

Overall- Still a decent beer, but I would prefer others from this style. See Bell's Best Brown Ale.

Light, tan lacing and a thin bit of foam sits at the top of the beer. The beer fades from cola brown to a ruby brown depending on the light. Semi sweet chocolate and dry hops make up the smell. Weaker scents than a soft drink. The taste starts sweet, but bitter hops take up most of the taste. Great with red meat, but not complex enough. The mouthfeel leaves a lot to be desired. Thin, and too much carbonation. I've had better.
