A: Pours a clear amber with orange highlights and a decent amount of white head that disappears quickly.

S: A gourd-like sweetness is the main character, with a hint of pumpkin pie following with an almost burnt sugar character.

T: The flavor is a sweet gourd character up front, followed by the same pumpkin pie spice and burnt sugar character on the finish. Very restrained, and refreshing.

M: Light, with moderate carbonation. The flavors are distinct, but work well together.

O: Overall, an excellent example of a pumpkin ale. You get the feeling that there is actually pumpkin used in this recipe from some of the residual flavors, and the spices aren't ridiculously in your face as they are in so many other examples of the style. Definitely a good example of the style.

Wanted to try some pumpkin beers, since its starting to cool down in Texas, so we grabbed this at the local liquor store in a mix a six. Glad we did! This beer was fantastic. Great pumpkin spice aroma, almost like Thanksgiving dinner. The taste follows the aroma, almost like homemade pumpkin puree from your moms pumpkin pie. It carries this taste throughout the finish. Went back to the store to grab a sixer but they were already out, and said they would be out till next year. Bummer! Definitely worth a try!!!

If the point of a pumpkin beer is to evoke the smells and tastes of pumpkin pie, then this beer succeeds better than any I have tried to date. Better still, the flavor is exceedingly balanced to the last drop, never veering into overly-spiced or overly-sweet territory. This beer was completely off my radar, so it was a really great surprise. First rate.

All that said, I am going to ding this beer a little for seeping from the bottle in transit, something I blame entirely on the twist-top. The smell when I unwrapped it was nasty. Lose the twist-offs, guys.

Great thanks to st9647v3 for this autumn treat.

Grabbed a single 12oz bottle at The Andersons in Toledo.

Appearance- Clear, deep orange with burnt orange highlights. Very nice color. Quickly fading, loose, very light beige head.

Aroma- Bright fresh baked pumpkin/squash-like aroma with an interesting perfume like essence. Subtle nutmeg and cinnamon spice that is supportive, not overwhelming. Undertones of toasty malt and burnt sugar pull everything together nicely. Great aroma!

Flavor- Starts with a moderately sweet maltiness and a nice subtle blend of spices. Fresh pumpkin fills the mouth in the middle to mute the spices bring the flavors together and push into a nicely balanced, softly spiced slice o' pumpkin pie finish. Notes of herbal hop bitterness throughout. Well balanced spice, pumpkin, malt, and hops!

Mouthfeel- Slightly creamy feel that really helps make this quite drinkable. Medium bodied, moderate CO2, low-moderate residual sugars. Nice balance of all flavors. Slight warming sensation but its pretty subtle.

Overall- A new favorite pumpkin ale! Finally, a pumpkin ale that actually tastes like a slice of pumpkin pie without being overly spiced! Excellent work balancing everything out without losing the spice, pumpkin, hop, and malt flavors. Great job on this beer, and a well hidden 7.4% to boot! Wish I would have grabbed a whole 4 pack!

Appearance: Pours out with a clear pumpkin color; a massive head dominates the pint glass and leaves strips of lacing behind

Smell: Caramel and pumpkin aromas balance out the base, with soft spicing wafts of cinnamon and nutmeg

Taste: Caramel and pumpkin flavors set the tone, with the spicing building on top through the middle; the balance between the malt and the spices works very well

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and some tingling on the tongue from the spices

Overall: I have been waiting for several years to try this beer and am delighted to finally have tasted this; the Munich and caramel malts really make a difference here as does the delicate spicing

look: 3.5 | smell: 5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance:
Pours a lightly hazed, deep amber body. On pour, a nice, white inch thick head is present but fades to a small ring pretty quick. Light carbonation, no lacing, and light legs.

Aroma:
In a word; Fantastic! This is pumpkin pie in a glass! Plenty of pumpkin character with roasted pumpkin seeds. Traditional pie spices are in attendance (nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and even a hint of clove) with a sweet pie crust coated in cinnamon and sugar. Whipped cream tops this one off. Yum!

Taste:
What more do want from a pumpkin beer than this: It taste like pumpkin pie in a glass? Follows the nose beautifully. A bit more spicing than the benchmark (Pumpking) and there is a definite bite from alcohol but it almost enhances the flavor instead of detracting from it. Nicely spiced aftertaste.

Mouthfeel:
Smooth and enjoyable. Fairly heavy body with low levels of carbonation. Clean, sweet finish.

Overall:
I love a good pumpkin ale, I'd go as far as saying it pretty much my favorite style. While this doesn't dethrone the king of pumpkin beers, Pumpking, it riding on its coat-tails, it's patiently waiting its for its turn to sit in the iron throne. Additionally, if I want to get my hands on Southern Tier's nectar of the gods, I have to drive 4 hours, giving Whole Hog a hell of an advantage. Do yourself a favor and snag this if you see it!
