Pours a nice, dense, tan head. Acidic, fruity, coffee-like aroma with toasted malt. Black. Starts with a bright, almost fruity, caramel/coffee acidity. Medium-low bitterness. Finish is toasted malt.

This isn't too bad. A bit more pronounced flavors of caramel than I remember. Not a bad combination of sweet and toasted.

I tried the 2012 Black Ale as soon as it came out at my favorite local bar. It had a smell of roasted hops that was very pleasing. The texture of the beer was ok, while the taste was very good. It actually reminded me of a stout in someways due to its color, aroma and the taste. I would get this beer again as long as they continue to make it.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. The aroma is toffee with some chocolate and earthy hops notes. The flavor is toffee and earthy hops with not too much else going on. Thin to medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a very exciting beer, but nothing too offensive either.

A-Black as night with oily tan weak head.
S-Burnt sweet malt is dominant some molasses notes.
T-Toasted, rich caramel with molasses malt with a hint of smokiness.
M-Creamy mouthfeel, rather heavy yet very smooth-a great combination.
D-Very nice for what reminds me of a stout.
O-Really nice flavor that is smooth and easy to drink. Can't ask for anything more.

Point's beers seem to have improved a lot over the last decade. I will be getting more of this one.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass

Pours near black with a short tan head that quickly reduces to a very thin top coat but leaves excellent lacing on the glass. Opaque but mahogany highlights and edges.

Aroma: a bit of over-ripe fruit coming from the bottle. This transforms into a more attractive fruitiness in the glass where the beer gives hints of both light and dark fruits, as well as toffee. Sweet with only light traces of hops and malt.

Taste: a nice, but not strong, spicy and fruity flavor; more hops and less malt flavor than expected for a "black ale", and the ABA category does seem more appropriate. Hints of caramel, vanilla, roasted nuts, licorice and, in the delicious finish, coffee. Excellent sweet/bitter balance.

M: medium-light body; semi-dry finish. Lighter than it looks, and a bit lighter than optimal, but works well with very good carbonation level.

O - more subtle than bold, this is a well-crafted beer worthy of attentive consumption.

Black pretty much sums it up; this stuff lets very, very little light in just creeping at the edges. A beige head is pretty small and fades pretty quickly, leaving a little lacing in spots.
The smell is nice, malty with a bit of a hops presence to it but lots of caramel, some coffee, a bit of earth, a slight hint of nuttiness, and a touch of smoke.
All the preceding follows through in the flavor, with an additional herbal, leafy quality like from the hops (are Saaz used in here?) and coffee comes through more strongly into the finish.
The crispness pulls out but it's strained to do so. Smoothness is more accommodating. The body is about medium but falls slightly short of where it ought to be.
I was expecting a Cascadian Ale, Black IPA, whatever you want to call it, but this is a pretty good brown ale, anyway.

not the best beer on the planet...to say the least!

not impressed with the appearance....solid black...with a tan fading head....with splotchy lacing...

smell is ok... i smell some dark fruits....maybe a little plum and prunes...

taste is not impressive....taste a little cheap (corn sugar, adjuncts)

the feel is pretty ok i guess...slightly creamy....with a good carbonation feel...

the drink ability sucks not because a lot of alcohol but cause this beer is not that great!

this beer officially gets my worst rating of all time....

Black indeed, small 1" thin, active head

Dark wheat and oats, vanilla, dark chocolate, malty sweetness with herbs and dry earthiness, subtle rootbeer effect.

A lush dark-roastie malt with wheat, oats, dry herbal hops that is all in great balance.

A dry, crisp feel that really pops, nice complex feel, dry and snappy, light to medium bodied.

Low ABV, high complexity indeed.

Thanks to Thorpe429 for the bottle. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.

Good looking beer, pours a very dark brown almost black with a little more than a fingers worth of mocha head.

Roasted malts up front in the nose. Maybe some bittersweet chocolate and black coffee in the background.

Some of that bittersweet chocolate comes through at first taste. Lots of roasted malt makes it pretty one dimensional. As some others have mentioned there is also a cola like aspect to this. Not bad but not really doing that much for me.

Light/Medium body with good carbonation. Maybe a tad watery.

Overall not a bad beer, has some redeeming qualities but not something I would probably drink to much of.

A - ruby black with a big, thick, frothy, brown head that has good retention

S - nutty, caramel

T - nutty, caramel, some faint roast, light citrus, faint coffee, light bitterness

M - medium bodied, well carbonated, smooth

This is a nice, full flavored brown ale. It's nutty and very malty with a very balanced hop character. I recommend this beer to all fans of the style.

Pitch black, indeed. This one comes at you with a thick head of fine, tan carbonation. Lace is spotty, and unremarkable.

Nose is sweet and chocolate. A little nutty, as well. Appealing!

Tastes mild, with some lightly roasted malts coming through. I get a little burnt cocoa, too. This one seems simple and uncomplex. Still, definitely session-worthy, despite being a mite thin.

Not bad for Stevens Point. I picked up a single at Princeton Liquors. The near black beer looked more like a Schwarzbier than a brown ale and tasted like a stronger (and better crafted) version of Yuengling Porter. It had the fruity dark chocolate flavor of a classic Baltic Porter, but then had a noticeably thin body that gave away the quasi-craft origins. The flavor dropped off pretty quickly, but what was there was quite pleasant.
