On tap at Bay Days in Ashland.

Pale yellow, decent initial head.

Smell faint, some banana and lemon, but some grain as well.

Taste a bit weak overall, hints of banana and lemon, but also a weak grain flavor.

Mouthfeel lacking somewhat as well, undercarbonated and came off flat.

This was a bit of a disappointment. A rare miss from South Shore, most of their beers are decent to good, but this one fell flat.

Pint glass at the brewpub. Yellow. White head. Not lasting. Clear.

I couldn't really detect the estery aromas that are put out by Bavarian wheat ale yeasts, but my wife, and other reviewers have noted them. They must have been pretty faint in this batch. Maybe part of the problem is that I noticed a much bigger sulfur smell. Rather off-putting.

Taste is unremarkable. It reminds me more of an American wheat than a German wheat. While the graininess of wheat malt is apparent, there is a deeper malt character (melanoiden?) that I find in imported bottles of wheat beer that is lacking here.

Similarly, I am look for a slightly creamier, rounded mouthfeel in a wheat, which I do not find here.

I sampled but did not review a batch of South Shore's Bavarian wheat a couple summers ago. I remember enjoying many of the characteristics that are lacking here (and no sulfur). New recipe? Consistency problems? This must rank as my least favorite of the brews I have tried there.

Originally reviewed August 4, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Pale golden, no head. Aroma of crisp hexane and esters, with a back of light wheat. Flavor is a typical clear wheat with lemon, clove and more esters. Respectable. Finish is clean and bright. Palate quite sugary, with a little grain. Not a lot of depth overall.

On-tap at the brewpub: Cloudy straw, lemon juice yellow, finger high, firm, puffy white cap, minimal lacing sticks. Smell has some dulled lemon, not as spritzy as some hefes, has banana juices, solid wheat tones and some clove and yeast spice hints. Taste comes through as what the smell brings out, mild flavors, very dulled lemon, much more banana flavors showing through, doesn't withstand much length; flattened finish. Feel is smooth, easy and creamy, shy medium body, dullish mild flavors and carbonation makes this stuff slide right down with ease. Not the best taster for a hefe but makes for a good little drinker. Enjoyable but lacking.
