A little bit too much funk adds a weird flavor to this beer. Some might appreciate this, but I think I would prefer it to be a bit cleaner. Yeast profile is light on the banana/clove scale. Leans strongly toward being a farmhouse ale (thus the cow reference in the name).

The mouthfeel is nice and appropriate, and the beer is a pretty typical hefe in appearance (but on the lighter in color side). Mouthfeel is especially nicely full.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, Lilja's Heifer Weizen is a hazy, straw color with a thick white, fizzy head. The nose is all yeast like you might expect from a good hefe; banana and clove with a slightly sour lemony-citrus scent. Taste reflects all that was present in the nose with a biscuty, horse (maybe cow) blanket taste. I guess that's what makes it "farmhouse". Mouthfeel is light and slightly drying with a minimal but sudsy carbonation. Overall, not a bad beer, not my favorite Hefe but solid.

Beer #3 8/9/13

The kind of pale gold color, not to mention unfiltered cloudiness, that i expect from an at least knowledeably-made hefeweizen greets my eyes. The head is chalky-white and sparse, too big-bubbled to keep itself together especially well. A bit of spotty lacing is left here and there, but not very much.
There's clearly a mix of wheat and pale malts rather than strictly wheat, dry and crackery. hops are grassy. The belgian yeast does come out in the nose, albeit somewhat lightly. Still, all the elements are in place, and it's not too weak.
It's a bit tangy up front, but it's balanced by the sweetness as the Belgian yeast, clove, banana and very light bubble gum notes come out a little more strongly on the tongue. Grassy hops finish out a good balance.
It's somewhat too spritzy and overcarbonated. That certainly makes it crisp, but the feel is certainly not as balanced as the flavor. A light chalky sort of dryness pulls into the end.

A pleasantly murky bubble gum style of Hefeweizen. Pale amber in the tall glass. Light body but lots of malt flavor. Tart and fruity. Has a bitter twang like plum skins, along with flavors of pear. The smell is dusty at first. Dandelions come to mind.

Some citrus aroma eventually, and a pleasant crisp citrus not along with the warm malt. Not the standard Hefeweizen, though it is quite drinkable. On tap at Hop Cat in Grand Rapids. [notes from 09-12-2011 visit]

Sand Creek Brewing : Liljas Heifer Weizen

LOOK: Pours a hazed golden color, white head and a bit of lace.

SMELL: Clove and orange peel, wheat malt and overall very citrusy.

TASTE: Semi tart yeast flavor, with clove , lemon and orange peel flavors. Muted unripe banana. There is very little bitterness and the beer finishes with a clean lemony citrus note. Malty as well so not one dimensional.

FEEL: Light to medium bodied, decent carbonation, a bit chalky.

OVERALL: A decent wheat with strong citrus flavor. Went down easily but not a standout.
