Thanks JPM30. Looks like a porter,black colour light head but faint odour.Taste porter-like, faintly. OK brew but weak in its style. A little roast, a bit creamy grain. A bit disappointing but quaffable. More of a nutty grainy brown then a robust porter.

Ruby-rimmed mahogany topped by a gorgeous head of toasted tan foam. There's something about the color and creamy texture of this cap that is immensely appealing to me. Now that thick, pocked lace has begun to appear, I like it even more. And I haven't even mentioned the light-rejecting opacity of the beer itself. As far as I'm concerned, a non-opaque porter isn't a porter that deserves respect. Tommy's is a great looking beer.

The nose is merely good. My Munich malt sensors are going haywire due to the (what I consider to be) earthiness of that particular variety. There's a moderate amount of roastiness with plenty of cocoa powder notes and very little coffee. It certainly doesn't lack aromaticity.

Whoa Tommy, there's the coffee! A big burst of roasted java beans explodes in my mouth with the first large sip. This is a porter to be reckoned with. It's as rich and as boldly flavored as many a stout, which is just how I like my porters to be. Subsequent mouthfuls reveal the depth of the flavor profile as I'm able to sort through the various non-coffee contributors.

Bittersweet chocolate is a close second and may even attain equal billing as the beer warms. That freshly dug earthiness is in the background on the palate. I like it in small doses, as it is here. Although I have no clue as to specific varieties, I can appreciate a pretty hefty hop load for the style, both in terms of flavor and bitterness. This porter is expansive, well-rounded, complex and--most importantly--delicious.

The massive amount of flavor tricks me into thinking that the body should be bigger than it is. Actually, it's on the upper end of the style scale and is becoming even more full and more richly lucious as it warms. I've often said that mouthfeel is the biggest indicator of brewery quality. If that's true, then Lake Louis is a phenomenal brewery. Yeah, like I couldn't have figured that out after the first upending of the glass.

Tommy's Porter is one of the best porters that I've had in a good, long while. It makes me want to drink every Lake Louie beer that I can lay my hands on. Good thing I picked up a decent selection on my recent trip up to Madison. Distribution to Iowa is the next, obvious step. 'This is livin'' says the Lake Louie bass on the label. I couldn't agree more.

A - Poured out an opaque, jet black color with a small, milk chocolate colored head. It left no lace.

S - It smelled of chocolate, caramel and slight floral notes.

T - It tasted of chocolate, caramel and bitter coffee notes. Overall, a nice roasted malt taste.

M - It was crisp and smooth. A light to medium-bodied porter.

D - This is a pretty good porter. Another solid offering from Lake Louie.

Acquired from JeffKrenner courtesy of Birthday Clu2, so a big “Thank you” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of dark chocolate, dark fruits and roasted malts with a touch of hops.

T: The taste is full of dark chocolate, smoky malts, cherries and raisins. There's a decent hops presence for the style that provides a good balance. The fruit flavors are a little more pronounced than they usually are in this style and they lend to a tart and slightly sweet after-taste.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, clean and dry finish.

D: Tasty, goes down easy, not too filling, good representation of style, decent kick, it’s a nice beer to drink for a little while but I would need to be in the mood for the fruity flavor in it.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a very dark brown (complete with floaties) with 1 1/2 fingers of creamy light tan head. Nice thin layer of retention that leaves some decent lacing behind. The aroma smells of cocoa powder, lightly roasted malts, some nutty character, and earthy hops.

The taste is a mix of chocolate and caramel sweetness, dark roasted malts that finishes with a touch of dark fruit tartness and a tingling earthy hop profile in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a mellow and creamy feel.

Not a bad Porter. A little lacking in the look and aroma department but a nice full flavor and easy drinkibility help keep this guy respectable.

Update: Levi sent me a new bottle, fresher, so I'm gonna do another quick update review.

A: This time it pours a large 2 finger creamy rich head that fades semi quickly, same murky dark brown color.

N: Sweet dark malts this time, loaded with roast and coffee. Essentially the same nose, but I also get a little brown sugar this time.

T: Taste is much different. This time lots of malts and porter flavors. A nice roasted barley, coffee, more dark malts, brown sugar, toasty malts, chewy malts slightly. A decent roasty dark malt flavor. Some chocolate malt, not too heavy on the chocolate though. A little bitterness with that, mostly from the roasty malt flavors but hints of hops.

M: Pretty light on the body, it's a little lighter than it's supposed to be, perhaps the only real flaw of the beer. Decent carbonation with that.

F: FInishes somewhat sweet with lingering brown sugar, some roasted malts, dark malt flavors, little coffee and slight chocolate.

A: Pours a light creamy 1 finger head that fades semi slowly, over essentially black colored beer. Light barely makes its way through at the very bottom of the glass where it thins a bit.

N: I could smell it from a mile away on the pour with tons of roast and coffee. Lots of porter like dark malts and creamy aromas, some slight chocolate - bakers chocolate, a rich slight earthy bitter roast, some creamy chocolate milk like, and touch of earthy spicy hop bitterness. Touch of fruity aromas too.

T: Lighter than I expected, and much different than I expected. Has quite a bit of a sour touch to it. Not sure if that is supposed to be there, or start of infection, but its tasty. No date on the bottle, only a brewers code. It has some more light roast and creamy porter flavors, but doesn't come on strong. Some dark malts and malty flavors, but mostly sour malty flavors, with a touch of sour fruit. It's lightly sweet with that sour contrast, and a little syrupy. Touch of coffee with the roast and some earthy bitterness mostly from roasted malts but touch of earthy hops as well.

M: Pretty light for the style, with slightly lower carbonation (also leads me to believe it was soured on purpose).

F: Still slightly sweet with a little sticky sweetness lingering. Some syrupy flavors too with a little lingering roast and coffee, touch of dark malty sweetness. The sour also stays around for a little bit, sour malts and touch of fruit. But no wild funk, barnyard or dry rustic flavors come at all, so seems like it was just a soured mash attempt. Really late on the taste it starts to get dry as well.

Not knowing what to expect I was a little surprised by this beer, but it is tasty. Perhaps there should be a new category called "American Soured Dark Ale" or something. This reminds me somewhat of New Glarus Old English Porter, not quite as good, but still tasty in its own way.

Glug, glug, glug, goes the growler...(yeah, I'm the original See'n'Say of beer, folks).. .and it pours a plummy brown, like rich molasses, and the creamy tan head has a sturdy presence and beckons one to come further, to make better acquaintance with this brew.
Aroma, richly roasty, yet still soft, and redolent with lightly bittersweet espresso and mocha connotations... just how I like my porters, how did they know?
Oh, very smooth on the tongue, in the palate and down the throat, sweetly slides over the sense, damnably drinkable. Body is full, finish is sweet, a touch thick, and finally drying, crisp and neat. This continues anew with each occasion that lip meets glass. Amazing flavor, and carbonation is so light, the mouthfeel so perfect that I would have no problem knocked this 64 ounce jug back in one session...this tastes "brilliant", screw those crappy cartoon micks in the Guinness commercials!
It's got me wishing I were residing more Easterly than I do, in order to easy access to a great porter like this, but as it is, I can only thank the magnificent cokes, who has once again provided me with a sample from this excellent Wisconsin micro, and I'm so happy it's such a large sample! More huge thanks to the amazing cokes!

Pours brown with a nice, fluffy well-retained head. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of dried fruit some roast, mild coffee. The dried fruit aspect gives a sour touch that I'm not fond of.

The taste is of coffee and chocolate with dried fruits, that, like the smell, give a sour touch. Fortunately the roast and coffee/chocolate comes through strong enough to keep the fruit aspect in the back, especially as it warms. I enjoyed the second bottle more than the first, and bumped up the score slightly.

It is pretty smooth, but there is a fizz that cuts into it initially.

I had two bottles, and the second was better. Wondering if the first was old or infected. Still the second bottle had a nice malty/mildly roasty character. I will try it again when I see it.

A vigorous pour into my 25cl tulip glass creates a three finger thick, lightly browned, fluffy tan colored head. The beer is a nice dark chocolate brown color that shows a brilliantly clear ruby hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a nice rich malt sweetness to it as well as a solid toasted dark grain character. The combination definitely reminds me of a fairly dark chocolate as well as toasted whole grain notes. There seems to be a touch of buttery diacetyl here which accentuates some of the sweetness, the combination of those two definitely provides a soft butterscotch aromatic note to the nose. The aroma is not half bad, I might prefer less diacetyl, but the amount here is fairly subtle and almost a positive thing.

Dry up front as it first hits my tongue, the beer is also somewhat lighter than the rich aroma might have suggested. Still the body of this beer is on the medium side for a quaffable porter and definitely has just enough heft to it without be too thick to be nicely drinkable. As the beer rolls across my tongue it picks up a nice, dark malt sweetness that transforms into a dusty cocoa note in the finish. Roast malt flavor contribute a drying coffee roast character as well as some whole grain, deeply toasted bread flavors. The diacetyl is less noticeable in the flavor, almost undetectable even to this diacetyl sensitive palate, it does contribute a subtle butterscotch note though. This has a very nice balance between soft malt sweetness and roast malt notes. At times it might pick up a touch of a sharp bitter burnt note, but this is kept to a minimum.

Not a bad beer, in fact it is even enjoyable. I was a bit skeptical after the Warped Speed I had from this brewery, but this is actually a pretty nice beer.

Appears black with brown edges. A 2 finger tan head slowly fades out into a small collar. Plenty of streaky lacing and film is left around the glass.
Smell is of creamy, sweet cocoa, and a dusting of coffee and mild roasted malt.
Taste is the same great aromas but it actually surprised me a little bit and is a really nice tasting porter.
Mouthfeel is super smooth despite it's roasty, rich characteristics. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt stick to the tongue. You really can't do much better.

A: The porter is a dark red-brown, like a coffee licquer (think the Chouffe licquer). Words don't do the head justice, as it overflowed from the bottle on opening and required 15 minutes of patience to empty it into the glass.

S: A touch of coffee bitterness mixes with a slightly sour lactic aroma and dark caramel/roasted malts.

T: The lactic sourness continues in the taste, a semi-sweet flavor that mixes with the roasted caramel malt flavors. Hops are sparse. Mixing with the caramel is chocolate and coffee, although the coffee pales in comparison to the chocolate.

M: The mouthfeel is full although the lactic sourness is not that enjoyable throughout the entire glass.

D: Average porter, nothing to get all worked up about though.

A-This beer pours a deep opaque brown with a thin creamy light tan head. Gentle carbonation sticks to the side of the glass but its to dense to see bubble rise.

S- light roasted malt with some faint sweetness.

T- This beer has a nice brown malt flavor with some hints of burnt malt and sweetness from toasted malt. A nice chocolate and coffee flavor as it warms gives it good depth. The gentle hop punch of bitterness that finishes this beer.

M-medium mouthfeel with some creaminess but no alcohol warmth or astringency.

D- This is a very pleasant porter. Nice complexity and good maltyness.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed 1/2" light brown head over the clear but dark brown brew. Head fades at a reasonable pace, with average to good lacing. Aroma is creamy chocolate with a touch of coffee. Flavor also has the chocolate character, with tremendous creaminess over the tongue. Mouthfeel is so smooth, and drinkability is excellent as well. Only had a couple, but Lake Louie's got some nice stuff by me.

Pours an opaque dark brown, very murky, thin tan head forms and settles down to a thin ring, some lace spots on the glass, looks okay. Smell is okay as well, a bit weird, plasticy, some roast and chocolate, caramel sweetness, brown sugar, a touch of raisin and dark fruit. Taste is similar, roast and chocolate up front, plastic, raisin, biscuit/toasty middle, a bit weak in the finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Not bad I suppose, but not very good and didn't really do anything for me. Thanks Russ!

1/2 gallon growler.

This beer is as close to black as you can get without actually being black. It pours a nice creamy chocolate brown head. Good retention and great lacing is observed. Beautiful aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. The taste is very pleasing. Bittersweet chocolate tones mix with black coffee and even vanilla bean to create a wonderful taste. The bitterness level of this porter is about perfect, even though I can enjoy more bitterness in a porter. Great roasted malt taste. Bitterness stems from hops as well as blackened malts. Very slight burnt toast present also. Mouthfeel is silky smooth. Like velvet. Body might be just a titch low checking in at about medium. Drinkability is high given the fact that this tastes as though it were hand-pulled. Low carbonation and great taste.

Could Lake Louie be one of the better breweries in Wisconsin and maybe the best? Quite possibly yes. I've had 3 brews and they have all checked in at 4.5 or higher. (Scotch Ale = 4.6, Pale Ale = 4.5, Porter = 4.5). The best brewery you've never heard of.

Purchased from Riley's fridge in Madison... so it should be in decent shape.

A: Brown-black with a tan head, very little retention or lace.

S: Roasted grains, brown sugar, chocolate, bread, light spicing & floral hops with a slight tang.

T: Unfortunately a grainy astringency dominates, which I found unpleasant at first, but eventually I got somewhat accustomed to it. Flavours of dark bread, chocolate & nuts; nice fruitiness; slightly metallic, with some coffee in the finish.

M: Moderate body is well-attenuated; low to moderate carbonation; roasted astringency.

D: Average at best.

There's a lot of good porters out there... this one just isn't for me.

hard not to have high expectations from Lake Louie

appearance: pours a rich dark brown with evident ruby tint, looks a little thin, light creamy head

smell: not terribly strong aromas...some roasted malt, coffee, some mild chocolate

taste: good but anywhere near the level of Great Dane's Black Earth in my opinion. it has a nice toasty malt backbone, with some faint hops...chocolate and coffee flavors are rather mild. Not as rich as I tend to prefer

mouthfeel; light carbonation, creamy but a little thin

drinkability: quite drinkable

Super dark brown with a sliver of amber at the bottom. Black in most light. Tall, dense cap of tanned froth bubbles up with verve. Slowly fades to keep one impressive amount always present. Tons of lace in thick cob-webby curtains draping across the glass. Great looking porter!

Aroma is of mild powdery milk chocolate with an airy charred wood hint thats slimmingly earthy and just a touch of roasted coffee.

Taste is quite nice. Lengthy middle and finish. Front is fluffy and cocoa powdered. Middle gains girth with some mild, easy roasted parts, more cocoa, and a bit of tender waxyness wrapping up the chocolate tones as it finishes dry and coffeeish with a tang of broad and darkly set roastyness. Kinda creamy in a few areas around the edges, a nice little balance to keep the roast, tang, burntness, and chocolate from going places it shouldn't.

Feel is unique as it tends to start kinda big, but mellows off nicely with a wetter, creamier side to its bold richness. Great simple texture with a full washy fluffyness. Mild, yet eager finish with a lasting recall of cocoa, roast, and creamy smooth malts.

Wow, this stuff is fun to drink. The perfect porter. Rich, creamy, bold, lasting, flavorful - damn fine stuff. Drinkable, and then some.

1/2 Gallon growler. Pre-filled.

Blackness built out of cherrywood. Greedy bleached-brown soft-serve ice cream head that slowly recedes to reveal deep glacial crevasses. Truly magnificent.
A silken, milken nose of chocolate accentuated by a roasty black malt tang.
Begins a bit sparse. Vaguely mocha with a tinge of underlying lacto sourness. Amplifies as it rests. A scooped-from-the-can coffee flavor materializes. Sweetness begins to form by way of the intersection of toasted liquorice, molasses and scorched raisins. Lacto notes move from sub-sour to milky sweet, coupling with a vanilla bean sensation. Turns increasingly dry in the later half. Hints of burnt rye toast, powdered cocoa and walnut skins. Hopping is understated, perceived only in the semi-bitter culmination, as it serves to bolster the lightly roasty dryness.
Arguably a hair on the thin side, yet this *is* a brown porter. Enormously quaffable in 64oz increments.

S: Lots of sweet chocolate malt and dark fruit. Big cherry presence. Interesting.

T: Molasses, raisin, chocolate, and root beer. Sweet, spicy, and a little syrupy on the finish. All right.

M: Lightly carbonated light-to-medium body. A bit on the spritzy side for a Porter.

O: Decent but forgettable.

This beer pours a nearly opaque black color. The head is a mere quarter inch in height, and recedes into minimal lacing within seconds. The aroma is of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a noticeable hop presence. It is a rather plentiful aroma that has nothing out of the ordinary about it, but is simply what one would expect of an American Porter. The taste is along the same line. The is more roasted malt, and dark chocolate than in the aroma with the hops nearly undetectable. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with appropriately low carbonation, and a velvety texture. Overall, this is a good porter that I could happily session.

Dark portery coal brown with a very small, ringy, off-cream head. Roasted malts, peaty swamp, light smoke, and chocolatey sweetness. Roasted bitterness up front, followed by meaty, smoky, earthy malts. Chocolate sweetness settles in, before coffee bitterness takes over. Medium bodied with an oily feel. Very nice porter.
