If I lived in Melbourne I would be darting into this place any night there was even the coolest nip in the air. What a cosy place! Wood walls, old sketches of British ships, perfect lighting, and good beer on tap. This is exactly the place to be on a winter night.
Dana and I had dinner, which was outstanding but a bit pricy. Definitely well worth it, though. Our waiter was very friendly, fast, and chatty. They had Mountain Goat High Tail, a bitter, and a porter on tap. They had others, but they were my picks. I can't remember who brewed the bitter and porter, but they were delicious and true to style.

One of my favourite spots when I head down to Melbourne. I found The Sherlock Holmes by pure happenchance as we were dawdling on our first visit , and I go back each time I head back.
It is one of those old English pubs where you walk down a solid wooden staircase under the old-school heritage buildings. Once in the pub you are instantly surrounded by more heavy wood and plenty of English pub fixtures and fittings.
Most times I have headed in, I have chatted with the lady behind the bar (also the owner), who was very friendly and personable. Exactly my sort of place - I love the small pub owned by a real person rather than a greedy corporation.
They have a selection of predominantly British beers and ciders (oddly) with some of the standard Aussie lagers to boot. Reasonably priced too, particularly for the Brits - generally they would be around $10 or so a pint, but here they were around $7 or $8.
A great pub!

This is a cozy little bar in the heart of the Melbourne financial district. They have added a number of taps since I was here back in 2008. There are more local Craft beers to choose from. Sometimes this place can get a little hectic but still interesting place to check out.

Thought I would go after reading the reviews on this website from other BA's.
Walked down the stairs to a cozy bar. With a BIG plasma screen. There are allot of english trinkets behind the bar. Very odd.
The beer selection was pretty good but my newcastle beer on tap was a little warm. Just a little below room temp. =( I had a few different beers on tap and the rest didnt seem to be warm so it must have just been the newcastle ale.
All in all, It is a good pub. Im going to go again. I hope the beer is colder this time. ( Note I did give it another shot on grand final day.) Bad idea.

The Sherlock Holmes

Okay, so I was a bit thirsty. I was The Sherlock Holmes first customer of the day today. I wasnt sure whether or not they were open at first. You enter through two double doors and then descend a flight of stairs and turn the corner before you get a glimps of the bar. All along the trek, old-tyme British sketches and news scenes line the wall.
The bar and restaurant area is a quaint, brick-wall and dark wood-themed basement. Its a really cool and relaxing place, with a Sherlock Holmes theme. No music plays in the mid-day, at least. A lone (and big) plasma screen TV hangs on the wall playing sports. Behind Dr Watsons bar is Boddingtons, Tetleys, Guinness, Kilkenny, Stella, Heineken, Kronenberg, Matilda Bay Alpha Pale Ale(!) and Carlton. The bottle selection is limited, with Cascade, Sterling, VB, Carlton Cold, Crown and Tiger on the shelf. Im a bit disappointed that there isnt more of a British theme in the beer selection. Id love to see an Old Thumper or a Fullers or a British IPA in the bottle case, or perhaps a Mackeson Stout in the bottle fridge. Oh well, one can dream.

top little downstairs pub in a former old factory basement. get in here at there right time and its intimate and pleasant.
very cosy, open fire going in winter. great range of english beers in the fridge, with st arnou and three ravens beers on tap, not to mention the classic old speckled hen on the go too. incredibly cheap for a pint here.
their pub fare is quite enjoyable, the steak and guinness pie and the bangers and mash getting a reasonable going over from me. several other options available also. top this with the ability to rent out board games like chess, backgammon or draughts from over the bar, and you can have yourself a fine evening thats quiet but never boring. the only downside is if its after work on a friday, theres no room to even swing a cat. saturday or sunday a much better time.
one of my favorite places to go for a traditional pub style evening, the sherlock is the sort of pub where you dont have to be a beer drinker to enjoy it.
