They had a decent selection for a grocery store but nothing out of the ordinary. They did have the usual suspects from Belgium so that was nice, but overall it was just above average.

Great selection, excellent prices, and when Randy is around you'll get the finest service you can ask for. Getting through to him is the problem. Now that I live in MD I rarely get a chance to visit but when I do it's well worth it.

The growler bar is ok. The best part is that you can shop while drinking the drink from the bar! The beer selection is great. One of the best around--in part because I think Churchkey is so close. Randy is great at getting the rare beers. You have to follow twitter and get there early for the good stuff before it's gone.

This is a super market which is important to consider because I am reviewing the bar selection only. Went in to get my growler filled. Apparently they shut down the taps at 9 pm. Very unfortunate considering they close doors at 10:30.

Staff was friendly and courteous but informed me I would have to come back at noon tomorrow. The selection was very unique and summery, notably Evolution Summer Session, and I was hoping to get the delicious Ommegang Fleur de Houblon. They bar is tiny and could seat many 5 with their coffee or growlers. I will go back because $10 for a 32oz isn't amazing but some of the beers are hard to find and would be more than $5 for a 12oz anyways in other parts of DC, so its worth a shot on a few of them. It appeared these beers had been on draft for 6 days and the bartender didn't seem to think they were going to be changed tomorrow (Friday) as someone else reviewing this location indicated.

This is my go-to store for grabbing new releases and some smaller batch brews that tend to be a bit harder to find on the shelves in DC. Hit them up on Tuesdays & Fridays at noon and you'll get it if they've got it. They do limit bottles on limited/rare brews.

Went to almost every bottle shop in the Georgetown area, just went for a long jog around town stopping into any beer, wine or liquor store. Was hoping that the nation's seat of power would have a better selection of All-American brew, but was sadly disappointed. Most places insisted they carried better selections but were currently blown out and waiting for shipments.

Whole Foods P street was my one saving grace on this sojourn. Despite not having any Bells, Floyds or Alchemist(guess it doesn't make it out here), they did have some Brooklyn brewery fifths (local 1 and 2, silver anniversary), an extensive DFH fifths collection (anything you can find on the west coast with the addition of My Antonia and Black and Blue), and a good overseas compilation. Lot of sixers and, typical whole foods("paycheck"), wouldn't let you break any packs. Wish I could have gotten more since they did have a lot of Duck Rabbit, Founders (including the porter and Curmudgen), 21st Amendment, Flying Dog and DFH packs in stock. Talked to the guy stocking the shelves who said they normally had Bells as well but were currently out.

Can't begrudge this place for what they didn't have on my list of primary interests given the extensive collection of breweries, but it is a shame their product list only seems to encompass a single aisle. Well worth a swing through to peruse the stock, if you're in the area and have the scratch to spring for the good stuff at whole foods prices.

Stopped here the other day for some BCBS. Incredibly, they had both 4 packs and the beer on draft as well.

This is pretty much a typical whole foods store, except one that has a surprisingly good selection of beer, located just to your left as you walk in from the street. On this day they had a pretty decent seletion of Goose Island and Founders stuff, which was the only thing I noticed in particular. However, they looked to have a sizeable selection of craft beer, and prices weren't too bad for DC (still high, but then again this is DC). My 4 pack of BCBS was "just" $22.99. In addition to a pretty solid bottle and can selection, the cafe here now carries roughly 8 or 9 beer on draft as well. There was no crap on tap, I'm happy to say, with the BCBS and chimay the standout selections on this day. My glass of BCBS was $9 a 10 ounce pour, which I'm sorry to say, is the least I've paid for this beer in quite some time.

As for atmosphere, this is a grocery store, so I wouldn't expect much. Service is likewise nothing spectacular, but the guy in the cafe was friendly and quick, which was all I could ask for. Over in the beer section, service seemed to be your typical grocery store non-existent (which is what I expected). Otherwise, the folks working here are friendly and helpful, provided your questions extend to "where's the cafe" or "where's the beer section."

This is a very fine store, one that also happens to be located close by two of my favorite places in the area (Churchkey and Big Hunt). Highly recommended....

One of my favorite places to hit up in the city since it's so close to Churchkey. It's always easy to swing by and get a bottle or two on the way to or from the bar.

Atmosphere isn't much to speak of. There's an aisle to the left when you walk into the store. Sometimes there'll be a few cases of things further into the deli section, like when they got New Belgium in. Service is good in terms of them answering whether they have things in, etc, though I've never really asked more-detailed questions than that.

Selection is a good sampling of pretty much all the breweries -- at least in terms of six-packs -- that are distributed here. Plenty of larger-format bottles as well. One irritating thing is that they're the only place to tape together two individual small bottles, e.g. Rochefort and Orval. I think this has to do with some D.C. regulation on size of to-go sales, but no one else seems to observe it.

Overall, a good spot in a nice location, though nothing mind-blowing. Worth a stop if you're looking for bottles and are heading to Churchkey anyhow.

This is a decent stop for when you are done at Churchkey and your mind is still in beer mode. It's right across the street and on the way back to the Dupont Circle Metro stop.

Atmosphere: Average in size, but Waaay above average in terms of patronage. This place is always packed! When you walk into the store, head left. There, you will find a big open cooler with tons of six packs and bombers. Facing this display is the warm stuff.

Quality: As with most Whole Foods, the quality is very high and tends to contain many breweries represented in DC's distribution arsenal. Every once in a while, this place will get limited release brews.

Service: This place really chaps my hide in the service department and I'll share two instances to illustrate:
a) When Goose Island BCBVS was released, many of my beer friends and I called to make sure they were going to get it on a specific release day and they said it would be available on that day. Fast forward to that day: They decided to keep the case that they got as a "private" stash for the employees and their close personal friends. Outrageous!
b) I found a beer that was no longer produced in the store (I believe it was Flying Dog's "Dog Schwartz"). I had the beer in hand as I shot the breeze about beer with one of their beer buyers. Then I mentioned, "Gee, it's cool that you guys get some rare stuff like this." Immediately his jaw dropped and then told me that he couldn't sell it to me. I asked, "You're kidding right?" He held his position, brought out one of his other goons from the back to reiterate, and I left without the beer. Stupid and unethical!

Selection: Good stuff overall. This is always the place I go to get Goose Island bombers and up until recently, DuClaw stuff to try.

Value: As with most Whole Foods prices, the items are usually slightly higher than most places.

Even though I've had some VERY brazenly bad customer service issues, I occasionally stop here if I'm in the area. I would suggest you follow that strategy as well.

En route to Pizzeria Paradiso I detoured, following the thread at http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/3752223 in search of Goose Island Big John.

Atmosphere: Entering from the west side of P Street, the beer and wine department is at the other end of the store. Once there, I was greeted by a cooler of beer and several aisles of room temperature beer and wine. Wine is, by far, the focus. Other than that, it's a Whole Foods, draw your own conclusions.

Quality: Clean store, well-lit, but no directional signs (Beer: This Way!).

Service: The express check-out was nice, a snaking line that had a loudspeaker directing one to the appropriate checkout. Staff was circulating through the beer section but talking amongst themselves and not me.

Selection: In the cooler, brace yourself. It's Big John! My mission accomplished, I grabbed two bombers and made for the check-out. A decent selection was packed into that one aisle, Bell's, Founders, Goose Island, Great Lakes, plenty of Belgian singles. A good selection for a grocery store.

My favorite Whole Foods other than the one in Vienna (I still yet need to visit the McLean store) as there boasts a much larger selection of brews. If you come often or look hard, you might land a more rarer brew. You can ask the beer manager or one of the beer stockers for specific beers that come into the store. The beer manager is hard to get a hold of and you'll need to be proactive and email him often. Overall, good grocery store though, like all other Whole Foods. I usually stop by when I visit one of my favorite neighborhood pub, Stoney's, across the street or if I hit up nearby ChurchKey.

This is close to both the Dupont and Convention Center Metro stations and Churchkey DC, so it's in a pretty good location. First and foremost, its a grocery store (obviously) but the beer / wine section has a nice selection of both but the beer is relatively pedestrian. They get some cool releases and its worth chatting up the beer representative there so you can get your name on a list for an upcoming release but otherwise its your basic microbrew / chimay store.

There are probably about 200 options as far as beer is concerned and the prices are quite reasonable. Its a fun place to go buy a few groceries and to pick up a nice beer for dinner, again nothing too rare. I'd shop here some more / again any day.

Staying a few blocks away at the Residence Inn on Vermont Ave. NW, I needed to grab some beers for the trek back to Oregon, visited 11/13/2010.

This is one busy Whole Foods with about 15 express checkout lanes. The beer selection is confined to an area of the store next to the wines. While they didn't have a lot of refrigerator case space, I'd say about 24 feet, the beers were of high quality. I saw a number of Founders, Bells, Great Lakes and other regional beers we can only dream about getting in Oregon. I settled for Bell's Expedition and the recent vintage of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, along with bombers from Heavy Seas and Long Trail. There is a similar amount of space dedicated to non-refrigerated beers, 4 shelves featuring a number of Belgians and stuff that wouldn't fit in the limited cooler space. When I visited on Friday the beer steward was quite helpful, and my subsequent visit the help went to the back to get me the BCS. While I don't really understand the DC policy of not selling singles (I don't anticipate street people coming in and grabbing a bottle of Weyerbacher 15), this Whole Foods location, while not having the selection of some of the Beervana locations (Hollywood, f.e.), was a rather pleasant surprise. Given the long trek out to Chevy Chase, this location, around the corner from ChurchKey, makes a lot of sense. Worth a visit for out-of-town BAs.

Hey all it isn't called Whole Paycheck for nothing!

However, contained within the bowels of the store is a fantastic selection of beers. There are 6 packs of variety, there are large bottles, and a solid group of bombers that are chilled. The selection is a little small, but it's diverse and changes often.

The place is situated in DC in Logan circle which contains a very diverse customer base but also a pickey one sometimes. However, there is a good group of people here who come in and know what they want, and the good stuff can fly off the shelf. There's also the big giant bottles that show up around Christmas and New Years, such as the large Piraats, Bernadus 12s, Anchor Christmas, Augustijin and so on.

The turnover of this store and product is huge even though it only fits on about two shelves. The actual amount they have though is enormous behind back, so if you see something that's not on the shelf ask them. However, the key stuff goes very quickly, depending on how much they get in too. Even a large shipment though can go fast, this is either the 3rd or 4th most profitable product selling WF store in the country depending on who you talk to.

Price depends on what you want and what you are buying. There's stuff for the football crowd (cheap Pabst) to 45 dollar a bottle Orkney stuff... you get the idea.

Great selection, and outside of the beer... it's whole foods which has great stuff to begin with. Grab that sandwich and some beer and killer cheese and you are set for some tastyness, what more could you ask for?
The place also now has a bar, with about 5-6 taps and growler fills. Also happy hour is a dollar off draft between 5 and 7. Sometimes there are obscurebeers there.

Update: The beer director who ran and made this shop the best bottle shop in DC no longer works there.
