Reviewed from notes in late Jan.

A - Poured out a mahogany colro with a bubbly, tan one-finger head. It left small traces of lace.

S - It smelled very earthy. It had a mild hop and malt aroma.

T - It tasted of chocolate. There was also a sweet caramel maltiness. It had subtle hop flavor.

M - It was soft and creamy. A medium-bodied beer.

D - This was an okay porter. Nothing from Ridgeway has really blown me away.

Last of my holiday brews lingering in the fridge....

Appearance> was pretty unimpressed with the appearance; perhaps it would be a different story were this tap and not bottle.
It poured kinda lackluster, with a small head that disappeared quickly. Looks a lot like flat Pepsi.
Smell> Much better than the appearance. It is smoky, with lovely grain aroma and chocolate. Quite enticing.
Taste> The best part, which it should be. This is a perfect chocolate porter. It has hints of burnt toast, full characteristics of an english porter, but finishing with a soft chocolate-goodness. And impressively there isn't one of those horrible over-spiced hangs that you often get with 'Christmas beer'.
Mouf> Very much like its appearance. Identical to flat cola.
Drinkability> so-so. And that says alot about the taste. If the mouthfeel matched the taste and smell, I could drink this everyday and maybe MAYBE even say it is my favorite porter, alas mouthfeel is very important.

Pours nearly opaque, dark brown to off-black color. Thin tan head that retains somewhat well.

Nose is slight vanilla with more pronounced malty roastiness.

On the palate is a multi-spice, roasty flavor with prickly sweet finish at the end. Basically an everyday porter or stout with holiday spice thrown in.

Finish is somewhat short.

Dark brown with mahogany highlights. One inch creamy tan foam that dissipates fast. Aroma is light and taste is thin. Has kind of a bitter cola flavor. Mouthfeel is thin. Overall this is not terrible by any means but I have had many better beers than this and I won’t be drinking this again despite the cool name.

Pours with an average head but falls pretty quickly. Color is a dark brown.

S: The smell is very pleasant with mostly coffee aromas.

T:A small amount of malt flavor with a pronounced amount of chocolate. Slightly bitter.

MF:Light body, but seems a little too thin.

Overall, it's okay but it isn't anything impressive and I wouldn't buy it again.

Poured a clear dark brown/red in color with a big thick tan head. Good lacing all the way to the bottom.

Smell was light with a bit of sweet cocoa and light coffee odor.

The flavor is very mild with a lightly bittersweet chocolate malt flavor with a touch of brown sugar, milk and coffee. Almost Latte like in flavor. Very mild overall.

Mouthfeel is very creamy and silky smooth.

An easy drinking light porter, not bad.

Pours an effervescent chestnut with ruby tinges & 2+ fingers of tan head. Above average lacing & average head retention

S: Some iron & bit of cocoa, plus coffee

T: Chocolate & iron up front. As this warms, dryness comes through, more chocolate & slight fruityness. Finishes dry with a bit cocoa & brown sugar

MF: Light/medium bodied with low carbonation

Drinks easy, just not very interesting, more malt please

Pours a one finger off-white head that fades to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Brown/mahogany color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Roasted malt and coffee nose. Flavor has moderate sweetness, biscuity. Slight bitter aftertaste. $5.20 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, MA.

Appearance: Dark crimson with an tan head that dissipates fast

Smell: Smells of sweet malt with a slight hop background

Taste: Very acrid bitterness, probably due to the roasted malts. Sweetness is there. Not very flavorful.

Mouthfeel: Moderate to high carbonation tingles in the mouth which doesn't pare well with the roasted harsh bitterness.

Drinkability: Wouldn't buy this one again. Not my style.

Presentation: Poured from a 500 ml brown bottle into a standard pint glass. The label has the now infamous drawing of Santa sitting atop a butt of beer and explains that a butt is 108 Imperial gallons. I lost track of exactly which states were trying to ban this.

Appearance: Pours with a thick, 2 inch head that settle slowly to a thin layer of foam. Decent lacing. The beer itself is nearly opaque, with slight reddish tones.

Smell: Sweet alcohol smell. Hints of toffee and anise.

Taste: A little bit of alcohol sweetness and bite upfront, with not much else. The sweetness has a vanilla and bourbon flavor. Very watery and bland.

Mouthfeel: Lower than average carbonation and very little body.

Drinkability: Very little taste. Watery and thin. Much too sweet. I thought this one had some potential, but it seems like just another gimmick.

Appearance: Deep amber in color, almost opaque, with a dusting of white foam, which rings the glass walls as well. Thin, broken lacing adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Mild notes of coffee and bitter chocolate dominate, as well as sweet vinous aroma.

Taste: Mild roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee carry the taste from start to finish. Beneath this there is a wave of sweet alcohol. Finishes with a mild coffee note.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, full, and pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: Pleasant and drinkable, an understated, but quite drinkable porter.

Presentation: Packaged in a sixteen-ounce brown glass bottle with a pop-off crown, served in a standard pint tap glass.

Poured into a pint glass.

Another Christmas beer, but one due to labeling rather than typical Christmas spicing. The label is the best thing about this lackluster porter. The beer pours thin and light brown, but ends up moderately dark with a white head that leaves some lacing. Chocolate and coffee on the nose, however both smell watered down or somewhat diminished. The flavor is weak - some milk chocolate and roasted coffee flavor, but there is very little in the way of dominant flavor. Mouthfeel is thin and unremarkable. A disappointing beer at best - I would not drink this again unless it was on draught. Not recommended.

I have been saving this beer for Christmas Eve. Pours a dark brown with red highlights, kind of the color of Coca-Cola. A small white head faded quickly. The smell is very sweet malt. The taste is also very sweet with a bit of hop bitterness in the back. The aftertaste is a light, bitter coffee. Mouthfeel is medium this with some almost-fizzy carbonation. A decent novelty beer for the season, but nothing outstanding.

This beer pours a deep brown color with hazelnut highlights and a creamy white head. Some lacing around the glass. Aroma was not very prevalent, it was somewhat sweet and earthy, but to be honest not strong at all.

Chocolate and mustiness enter the palate first, followed by a bittersweet nutty flavor, and English hops. Slight metallic taste is left on the tongue. It doesn't deviate too far from your typical English porter, but that's not always a bad thing. Mouthfeel is a bit too thin for my liking. Novel name and an interesting conversation piece, but a bit pricey ($5.25) for what amounts to a standard Brit porter. Worth a shot though, after all, 'tis the season...

Impressive three-finger head that leaves some light lace on the glass. Dark brown, but light does shine through.

Light cocoa aromas; very mild

First impression is the relatively thin body--almost like a dark lager. The flavor is relatively light as well--some semi-sweet chocolate, light hop for balance.

Overall, this is an innocent beer that doesn't do anything wrong. No flaws but nothing unusual either.

The bar was out of Bad Elf, so I opted for this instead. In terms of presentation, the beer gets all the points in the world: funny name, good illustration, shapely bottle, humerous text informing you that "butt" is not what the censors think it is even if there's a big ol' picture of Santa's rear end on the label. Very nice.

The beer itself is not bad. Nice brown color with a tan head that dissipated rather quickly. The aroma was a weak point; even after letting it warm up, there was little discernible aroma. The taste was roasty with bit of alcohol bite. Others have mentioned chocolate and coffee, but I was getting perhaps more of a toffee thing going on. The body was a bit on the light side. On the other hand, the lack of much aftertaste made it an easy drinker.

Not an overwhelming brew, but fun!

Poured to a dark brown with thin tan head that lingered awhile and left some lacing. Aroma was a muted chocolate-coffee aroma. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and watery, with little zing, and the flavor followed the nose as a muted coffee and chocolate. Finish was smooth, but never did catch any alcohol or warming effect.

Nice novelty beer around Christmas, but not a great beer. Should be way down on the list of Porters to try.

This porter or so called holiday porter is dissapointing. It pours real thin with a head too white. The nose is almost non existent. The taste has that classic ridgeway dirty tank flavor. some hints of malt and coffee, but far too thin to be a porter much less a holiday porter. The mouthfeel is not creamy in the last, it has a lager feel. Some people like these beers alot and if its your thing im sorry, but i just cant get into them. The bottles are cool, but i just cant see myself buying any of these beers again except maybe the insanely bad elf.

Service Temperature, 35 degrees. Judging Glassware, Belgian Tulip, 12 ounces.

This is going to be a quicky, since much the grey and white foamy head, it dissipates throughout.
Observing, the dark pool I don't really detect much light or clarity. The foamy head that is produced from this beer is mostly grey and white with no lace. A waft of sweet mild citrus creeps across along with some roastedness blends together. Tasting it I detect roasted, licorice, and some mild chocolate & coffee. Overall mouthfeel is mild to medium.

Cheers

The label and name alone make this beer worth trying. This dark brown brew has a fizzy off-white head that eventually disappears. Some light chocolate and smoked wood in the smell. Taste is a bit thin for a porter but solid with some burnt coffee notes and chocolate malts, not all that thick or full bodied though. Sweet with a little bitterness at the end. Very drinkable and not heavy enough that you can't have another. Worth a try.

Pours a deep amber/ black color with a tan head, In the aroma, a sweet malt, small cocoa and caramel notes. In the taste, a roasty malt and a nice sweetness. A small bitterness and light malt in the mouthfeel and a malty, small cocoa presence in the aftertaste. A very nice English porter, small bite and a nice malt, nice cocoa presence as well.

Appearance: Poured from the 1 pint 0.9 fl oz bottle into a pint glass. The beer is a dark brown. A rather vigourous pour produces only about 1/4 inch of head. Head fades to a small dollop on the beer, no lacing.

Smell: A good bit of malt, slightly sweet, yet a touch roasted malts, some burnt chocolate and caramel. Not really anything hop related, but I did not really expect any.

Taste: Light malt, slightly burnt, yet retains a slight bitter, sweet flavor to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium to almost light in body (at least for a porter IMO), not really watery though. A little dry on the finish.

Drinkability: It's been cold here in Lincoln, with about 5 inches of snow on the ground (for December that's a good amount), so I was kinda in the Christmas mood when I bought this yesterday ($4.99 at The Still). An ok beer, I may buy one more for Christmas, if there are any left.

I picked up this brew on a whim, mainly due to the name and the label. On popping the cap I enjoyed a nice sweet smell that you get with a porter. I poured it into a frosted beer stein and got a dark brown pour with a light brown one finger head. The taste and mouth feel were average for a porter. Not great, but not bad.

Poured a dark brown with no foam or lace. The smell of roasted malts and just a hint of caramel was the aroma that I picked up upon first sniff. The flavor was of weak roasted malts and weak whatever this porter was made up as. Not a lot of flavor, just drinking flavored malty water. This was a great name for this ale, "Santa's Butt", what a perfect name for this porter!

Pours a little 1 1/2 finger head that quicly disspiates. Nice dark brown color.

I smell orange peel, nutmeg, cinammon, caramel malts and some chocolate malts. THere are also some pale malts present. I also smell a hint of mint.

Smell is sweet upfront with pale, caramel then chocolate malt bitterness. No roasted malts here.

Nice complexity in the taste. A lot going on here. Something has to be said for a beer that is so balance. Not super adventurous for a porter, but nicely balanced, and the spces make this a nice holiday brew. Finish is with a moderately low hop bitterness that leaves a dryness on the palate.

Crisp carbonation and slight creaminess on the palate.

This is a simple beer to drink. Good for 40 degree weather. If It gets below 10, I'm going for something stronger.
