Pours clear, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is big tobacco, baker's chocolate, Tootsie roll and faint smoke. Very very dry, light bodied, moderate carbonation. Makes for a nice session porter. Glad I had it but not sure if I would get it again. A bit too dry for me and I would like more smoke. Solid English ale though.

Pours a deep mahogany color with a thinner but well sustained light beige head atop. The aromas are kinda lacking I have to say,I do get some faint smokiness and molasses but it's faint.A dryer porter for sure with a bit of wood and faint smoke, some chocolate comes thru as it warms but it doesn't provide much sweetness.Eh pretty subtle with I know is the English way, but maybe to subtle here.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Faint swiss cheese and light tan head, nearly white and quite light looking. At an even three fingers, pops in big bubbles to settle to a thin puck and creamy topped collar. Deep mahogany brown body color with a nice dark red edge.

Aroma is a bit muted and underwhelming. Barely a wisp of smoke, with a bit of dry grain and slight acridness. A bit of hinted roasted malts, and slight fruity character.

Palate makes a big improvement. Good rich hinting milk chocolate sense in the mid palate. Smoke angle hits nicely, but a thicker rich berry quality comes through with a very creamy sensing palate from what seems like classic English yeast. Fruity thick and creamy flavors, getting into strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. Faint whaffs of smoked malt only on the finish, less so in the mid palate and first sips. Light tastes of black licorice slowly come out as the palate rests.

Very nice brew, limited on the smoke, but has a great fruit classic English angle and porter richness.

Attractive dark coppery color but not much foam. Coarse carbonation and a mouthfeel that starts out sharp like club soda, and then flattens out. A little smoked flavor is the best feature. Not much actual malt flavor. It's just dry and woody with a little of the dirty hop taste.

What is that peculiar aroma? Something like ash more than smoke. This just seems like another of the sillier sort of bottle English beers. Not very interesting, unfortunately. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Whidbey Beer Works in Washingon state.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark walnut brown with a thin, light khaki head that dissipates to patches and light ring, with light lacing. Nice aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, a hint of peat and vanilla. Flavor is dominated by smoked malt with quite light dark malt, chocolate, light nuts; finishes with somewhat stark smoke, with residual light malt and hints of hops. Medium bodied. The profile seems more like a light brown ale than a porter, mostly because the flavors seem subdued, except the smoke, which is nicely done. With a more robust malt flavor to the base beer, the smoke would be better supported. There are some nice flavors here which are well integrated and balanced, just rather subdued. This seems to be the standard for this brewery, nicely flavored ales that seem to be holding back so as not to offend anyone. Enjoyable enough, but I'd probably pick up something richer in the future. Nice smoked malt flavor.

Four fingered head, leaving plenty of spotty lace. The brew is solid brown where light shines through faintly.

Cocoa aroma with a background metal distraction.

I like that the smoked element is mild. Starts with a neutral chocolate flavor. There's a bit of hop in the swallow, but the aftertaste is mostly cocoa. The metal does show up but in the background. Good body.

So now I'm trying this as a cask offering. I have not read my review above on purpose. I soil change my scores based on this tasting.

Excellent aroma of nearly burnt sugar, caramel and dark chocolate. Quite sweet.

Thin bodied with an expectedly low carbonation. A bit more burnt-ness to the flavor but otherwise it matches the smell. Frankly, I'm disappointed with flavor given how excellent the smell was.

Remarkable change in my assessment.

5.8 version: 11.3 fl oz bottle. Poured on 4th March 2014 at home into a Gordon thistle shaped glass just for the hell of it. Actually the brew suited it, or it would have done if the head had bothered to appear.

Dark, dark ruby red to a deep mahogany body with ahead that disappeared before it arrived: I don't like that!

Mild smokiness to the malty aroma, same in the taste. Some wood notes within the flavours and nose. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate arrive as the beer warms a little which add depth and character to the brew which had been a tad blandish when cooler.

Weaker body than I expected but not watery, just not Porter like either.

Overall not bad, wanted more from it, but content with what I got.
