I found this on the way back from exploring the Shenandoah area again. As the name suggests, eighty percent of the store is devoted to vino but even the one plus long aisle devoted to brew will keep you busy for a while. The organization and labelling is pretty haphazzard but they have a ton of local stuff and plenty of regional favorites too and the prices are pretty fair overall. The ability to buy lots of singles for fair prices will bring me back for sure.

A decent store with a decent selection of beer, cover all the basics. Every once in a while the will have hard to get beers which sell out very quickly

This is an awesome Total Wine, a hidden gem even, tucked far away from the hustle and bustle of DC.
Atmosphere: The wife and I were over in the Dulles region at the "Home and Garden Show." Afterwards, we went out to the mall region, and, being the BA that I am, I suggested we hit this place based on my research. Great idea! It was located in a strip mall with a "Michael's (amongst other places) [dropped the wife off there while I did my brew hunting].
Quality: Seemed like the typical "Total Wine" upon entry, but the overall stock here is much greater that others I've seen in the area. Why is that?
Service and Selection: No one came to my aid, but I never asked for it. If service is what you want, hit one of the many 5-Star restaurants in the area. Selection: No whales, but pretty much everything that was supposed to be in stock in the region actually was. Imagine that?
Value: You've been to "Total Wine" before, right? The place is a bargain compared to most places in the area. However, you don't get the personalized service.
The best the chain has to offer in the DC area. Hit up this place if you're in the area. It won't disappoint!

Total Wine & More, in Sterling, Virginia, is my go-to place for craft beer. They have an aisle dedicated to bottles from a wide range of brewers, and a great selection of six-packs from around the world. There is a small section that features seasonal bombers, that is the best I've seen in the Dulles area.
My one gripe is that the staff does not know beer. I've been there many times, and I've never met a well-versed employee. In April 2009, I read on this website that Founders had begun distributing to Virginia. Two weeks later, I asked a Total Wine employee, who was working the beer aisle, and he reacted as though I asked about Bigfoot (Sasquash, not Sierra Nevada).
There's more than enough high-quality beer choices at this Total Wine & More to keep me satisfied, and there are few places, within driving distance, where I would rather spend an hour on a rainy Sunday.

This was one of the better Total Beverage locations in the area until Chantilly and Springfield really stepped up their selection and service. Then Whole Foods and Wegmans moved in and have selections that really compete well also. None of this has made Total in Sterling actually have a worse selection or lower quality. It's just not relatively as good as it used to be.
Q: A wide range of beers can be found here, from exotic or extreme beers (think DFH 120 minute IPA or Victory Storm King) all the way to typical Bud Light or Heineken.
S: Friendly people, but definitely more knowledgeable about wine than beer.
S: They offer domestic and international beers by the bottle, pack or case. Pretty good selection overall, but there are a couple that are better in the area.

This Total location is less than a mile from my house, so I visit it quite often. Probably too often, but I can't help it! Anyway, they have a pretty good beer selection, but I've been to other Totals (specifically in Chantilly) that offer a bit more. There is usually an employee wandering around that will ask if I need help, although I almost always decline since I typically already have a clear idea in my mind of what I'm shopping for. I've never had any problems with this location, but it would be nice if they could figure out a way to bring in some of the top west coast brews like AleSmith or Three Floyds.

First let me say this is the closest store to my house with a decent selection of beers. It is where I almost always go to get something other than the brands which can be found virtually anywhere (such as Sam Adams Boston Lager, Anchor Steam, etc.). For those familiar with this chain, some other locations have better selections but this one is better than anything else I have found closer than Vienna.
Perhaps I am just used to Northern Virginia prices but I think the prices are reasonable. They are certainly lower than nearby grocery stores with good selections. There is a large selection of beers that can be bought by the single, though my annoyance is slightly different than that of one of the other reviewers in that I would like to be able to buy more and get a volume discount, but they just ring up the prices of all the singles. Oh well.
There is a pretty good selection of kegs in the back, several of the mass produced or popular micro and local brews in the cooler and lots of beers by the case. All in all not what you will find at the best beer shops, but much, much better than normal wine stores or grocery stores.
