50cl bottle fresh from the brewery. Mine indicates 4.4%. Pours black with a full, light beige head that leaves nice lacing. Smells of sweet, chocolaty dark roasted malt; a bit like Ovaltine actually. Taste is also on the sweet side, with plenty of cocoa coming through. Not cloying by any means; a pretty decent hop presence comes through towards the end. Very faint metallic taste. Full body. An easy-drinking stout, for sure.

A - Dark cola black with ruby brown edges. Good sized tan/beige head with decent retention and a fair amount of lace left.

S - A little faint but the smell is chocolaty with a hint of caramel. Also fairly prominent is a roasted malt smell.

T - Good base of chocolate and roast malt. Also some caramel as well as a bit of coffee. A little bit of citrus, earthy and, bitterness from hops and a hint of medicinal taste finish the beer. Overall slightly sweet but not cloying.

M - Medium starting to edge toward full body. Good carbonation. Pretty smooth.

D - Good drinkability. Easy and smooth to drink with a number of flavors. Sweet and bitter balance out well.

Notes: ABV = 4.4%. Pretty good milk/sweet stout that has a prominent chocolate/lactose taste but isn't overly sweet. Nice beer to sip on for a while with a number of flavors on the tongue. Probably not the most memorable beer, but a tasty one.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a 500ml bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: A comparatively dark pour yields a small, one finger, thinner looking, really noisy, light tan head that quickly vanishes. Black body with higher levels of carbonation decorating the top of the brew. Head quickly fades to a splotchy wisp with lots of carbonation fizzing to the top. Ring remains with no wisp, leaving no lacing at all. Looks like fizzy coke by the half way point.

SMELL: Medium strength nose. A touch of roasted malts, but more caramel and liquorice. Touches of dark chocolate, but more about the caramel and liquorice. Not very stout like.

TASTE: Some roasted notes, but not much. Mostly caramel malt, liquorice, and some brown sugary sweetness. Hop bitterness at the swallow as well. A bitter-sweet hop and caramel aftertaste is mild and lingering. Again, not very stout like. Missing some of the roasted, chocolaty and coffee notes that are so prevalent in the style.

PALATE: By far the best part of the beer. Medium body and carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry on the palate. Pretty good stuff here.

OVERALL: Besides the fizzy, lifeless look on this one, there was nothing particularly bad about it. The nose and flavor were alright, but there just wasn’t enough stout qualities there to even make it average for the style. I could finish the beer just fine, but unfortunately it didn’t quench my thirst for an English stout. Not a recommended example of the style.
