Poured a dark copper amber with a small beige head. Aroma and Taste of floral earthy hops, some citrus fruity, caramel malt and mild grass notes. Palate is a medium body, light carbonation, mild sweet bitterness on the tongue. Finish is sweet caramel malt, fruity with some yeast, grassy notes with some earthy floral hops bitterness. Aroma and taste seem a bit weak but improve somewhat as it warms up. Overall not the best in class but a good drinking session ale.

Best before: ?(spot left blank on bottle.. thanks guys!) Into a Shorts Imperial Pint Glass...

A - Slightly cloudy golden amber body with a good thumb of off white head. Good retention and some lacing.

S - Nice malt backbone to this aroma, toasty with really nice toffee and caramel sweetness. Slight grassy/citrus notes from the hops, very slight...

A - Grassyness from the hops is picked up immediately. Biscuit maltyness mixes with caramel and toffee notes underneath the more assertive than expected hop presence in the midpalate. At the swallow, one really gets the Fuggles, very grassy and bitter with some very light citrus notes, very present, without being overbearing.

M - Carbonation is just about right for a bottled English Pale, which to me mean I just wish even more I was getting this on cask... That creamyness would do wonders for this beer.

D - Nice session beer, good balance with very expressive hopping. Up there with Fuller's in my book, and better than Sammy Smith's... Recomend when you're in the mood.

A - This one is bronze colored with a nice four finger head that crackles and pops it's way down to two fingers and stays put. This is some serious head retention! Lots of really crusty white lace is all over every inch of the glass. The label showing hop harvesters on stilts is pretty damn cool, and helps ya understand why it's called "Long Leg."

S - Deep bran biscuit aromas underline a tea-like hop aroma with hints of cinnamon and caramel. This smells hoppy, but not in the American sense of the term. This is deeper, more mellow, relaxed, and calm. Sweeter too. I love how mellow, yet complex this brew is. Old wood cabin notes, nuts, toffee, peanut brittle, I could smell this all day.

T - Toffee, caramel, strong black tea, and buttered toast. This is initially sweet and toffee-ish before turning bitter and herbal, like chewing on Earl Gray tea leaves. Like the aroma, this is complex as all get out, but it's got more oomph. There is an almost stout-like black coffee flourish at the end too.

M - Medium bodied and well carbonated, this has a hard-water feel to it, and the initially semi-sweet nature of this brew gives way to a steadily increasing dryness. Nice!

D - This is the very definition of an English session brew. I could take a bath in this stuff. It's that good.

1 Pint 0.9 fl oz bottle purchased from Super Saver Liquors in Somerville...
"English Fuggles Hop Ale" on the front logo sticker...
Appearance: Pours a tawny, copper, ruddy hue with a decent-sized foamy head that exhibited adequate staying power before slowly dissipating...
Smell: Ruddy, amber-grain aroma with hints of caramel and vanilla...
Taste: Flavor strongly complemented the aroma... Slightly bitter in the finish with hints of malts balanced by a slight dose of hops...
Medium-bodied mouthfeel along with a good level of drinkability...
Not bad... Easily drinkable... Recommended...

A-Pale yellowish amber with a thin white head that hung around and left nice ringing lace behind.

S-Sweet caramel malts and the unmistakable earthy, nutty aroma of Fuggles hops. Nice especially since this is from a bottle...I bet this on cask would be great!

T-Lightly fruity, earthy nutty Fuggles hops with a nice balance from the sweet caramel malt.

M-Medium-light body, with a good bready chewiness. Clean semi-dry finish.

D-A good tribute to the king of English hops. As stated previously, this is pretty darn good considering it's from a bottle. I bet this beer served by the classic gravity cask method would be stellar! Nice to see that these hops survived the trans-Atlantic crossing and subsequent storage!

The color is a clear bright orange. Icy lace sitting at the top. See through. The lace sets it apart.

The smell is heavy bitter (fuggle) hops, that have that distinct chlorine aroma. Smells good. The hops are of the bitter, Euro variety. The hops are bitter, but softened.

Sweet brown ale flavor. Lots of added sugars. The sweetness is a bit off-putting. The hops are more apparent as it warms. Sweetness subsides; toffee and molasses come out.

Thick and a little chewy/chunky feel. Too sweet of a brown sugar taste. The bitter hops are not a balance, just the opposite extreme. Drinkable, not a crave-worthy brew in my book.

Extreme tribute on fuggles hops. Light yellow with lacey white head. Above averga carbonation. The lace coats the glass. A bit of hoppy, almost cheesy aroma. Medium plus mouthfeel. It climaxes in a fruitiness. Worthwhile pale to try. A sticky aftertaste that I love, that I hate.

Smelled some faint hops for a second before pouring it but after that it was all overly sweet, gooey mildly gauzy malt. Taste was similar with an odd sweetness and equally unusual tart bitterness. Not infected bad, but still not enjoyable. Something about the whole experience of this beer was extremely unappealing. Not the worst I've had, but I didn't bother finishing the last half.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a decent lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of honey, mint, tea, light caramelized malts and a pale hops.

T: The taste starts out with a burst of sweetness from flavors of honey and caramel. Then some flavors of tea and other spices come in along with a hops bitterness that is pretty strong for the style. The malt character is not heavy but it's about what you would expect from this type of beer. It's flavorful but the harmonious balance just doesn't seem to be there. The after-taste is bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp with a little smoothness, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very dry.

D: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it's not a bad beer but there are certainly other EPA's that I'd pick before this one.

A- Pale yellowish amber color, semi clear, very thin cover head, some carbonation bubbles rising

S- Caramel malts, grains, sugar, dried fruits, hint of hops

T- Nutty, caramel malts, bready, grains, sweet, creamy, slight bitter bite of hops near the end

M- Medium body, light/medium carbonation, smooth, semi-dry finish

D- Fairly good session beer

This beer is what I call a good well rounded beer. All the flavors blend very well together. There isn't anything that stands out in this beer that I would call exceptional but it is still good none the less.

Cracked open a bottle of this not really knowing how much to expect--I've not had much experience with English ales and I've never brewed with fuggles, but i figured (almost) every beer is worth a try.

Popped the top and got a nice grassy hop smell-perhaps i was imagining it, though. Gold colored with a hint of orange, Big creamy white foam, fair retention, left spotty lacing down the glass.

Smell was almost nonexistant--i think my nose is a bit stuffed up but other reviewers seem to say the same thing. Taste is thin, mostly bitterness from the hops with not real malt to back it up--unusual for an English brew. Aren't they usually malt heads on that side of the pond? Metallic taste in the finish that just lingers...

Mouthfeel is watery, another disappointment. Drinkability is very low becuase of the lack of malt balance, hops taste or aroma, and the lingering metallic finish. If someone offers you a bottle or you can get it cheap, why not, but I would be surprised with myself if i ever were to purchase this again.

Poured from the 12oz bottle into a pint glass a crystal clear light copper color, bronzish color. Clear as glass with a decent sized, white head that is somewhat rocky and fairly dense. Nice lacing as well.

Aroma is typical of an English Pale Ale. With more and more experience, I am beginning to notice differences in hop aromas. I brew Enlgish ales and use Fuggles alot and it is nice to see a Fuggle exclusive hopped beer out there. I like this one. Malty and slightly hoppy, per the English rulebook.

Nice flavors. Good caramel flavors with the hops coming in toward the back and leaving a tinge on the tongue. Bitterness is almost perfect and the hop flavor seems very well designed.

I really enjoyed this one. I had never heard of or seen before but I am glad I picked up the sixer. I will have no trouble finishing these beer. A perfect session beer, in my opinion. Hoppy, mild, and not overly alcoholic. A real treat!!

Chill hazed, light honey yellow. Actually quite bright and clear once the condensation leaves. Small, unlasting cap of whiteness. A few thick globby strings and a few spots of lace are left along the glass.

Soft, delicate, chewy caramel aroma with a bit of pale melon fruityness.

Taste is mostly malt and fairly low toned, breif carbonation stay in the front. Pale caramel with a few hints to some melon, apple, and green grapey dryness. Finish is light and short-ended with a smallish hop leafyness and some mineral-like ascents sticking behind late.

Body is a bit loose and shy of medium, firm, clean, yet stubstantially missing a better boldness and girth to its mouthfeel.

An OK Pale ale, nothing to get excitied about, but drinks fine enough.

Pours a clean yellow / orange-ish color with a white head. Aromas that are hops and something like shortbread sweetness. In the taste, more of this shortbread cookie sweetness. A smooth sweet mouthfeel with a sweet cookie aftertaste. Not much for hops and a bit sweet for a pale.

A: Poured into a pint glass from a 16.9 oz bottle. Body is honey-amber in color, with a fluffy 1.5 finger white head on top. Lots of bubbles.

S: Slightly metallic scent over a caramel-sweet malt base. Leafy hops too.

T: At first I wrote "tastes like a dry-hopped English Ale," but the more I drink it the more I feel it wasn't malty enough to merit that description. The most noticeable trait is the slightly piney and minerally/metallic hop flavor in the finish and lingering into the aftertaste.

M: Light in body -- too light, in my opinion, for the hops that take over; it could've used more heft underneath from more malt -- and well carbonated.

D: Good but not great.

Notes: Not sure how old this bottle was, as the "best by" date was blank or had been washed away.
