Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Firestone restaurant glass
From: VONS in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99 (w/ VONS card) for a 6-pack
Purchased: June 30, 2014
Consumed: June 30, 2014
Misc.: Bottled on May 1, 2014

Poured a caramel, orange, hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of frothy white head. Surprisingly couldn’t notice any bubbles coming up from the bottom. Below average amount of layered lacing on the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled a pleasant whiff of hops, leading with a sharp potent grapefruit/mango hybrid. Also a significant amount of floral hops, and some caramel, honey, earthy rye hops, tropical notes and wet Cascade hops.

Tasted pretty much like I thought it would have, but boozier. Got earthy rye hops, mango, citrus hops, bitter grapefruit rind, light floral hops, faint pineapple, lime, some pine and caramel. To sum up the taste I’d go with bitter and boozy.

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter astringent finish. A bit like rubbing alcohol.

I may have slightly overrated this one. Not bad, but not great.

I love this beer. I love my American IPAs to be hard, hoppy, and very bitter. This does not disappoint. A beautiful golden brown, smells of rich hops, and tastes as bitter as one could hope for. Not for the faint of heart, the aftertaste might too bitter for most. It's my favorite draft at the local sports bar. Would highly recommend to all strong IPA enthusiasts.

poured into a tulip glass from a 355mL bottle.
bottle date: 5/30/14
pour date: 8/18/14

APPEARANCE: caramel yellow with a mild haze to it with small amount of yeast percepitant. 1/2" foamy head with blocky retention.

SMELL: freshly mowed alfalfa and overly-ripened cantaloupe

TASTE: a quick sprite of citrus, then a mellow grainy gulp, with a bitter aftertaste. bitterness hangs around a while- could be due to the old bottle date.

FEEL: surprisingly thin for 7% ABV. Drank quickly.

BURP: pleasant.

a solid 90, especially for the price.

I quite enjoyed this beer. I was staying in a hotel and the gas station across the street had only one IPA on hand so I bought it. It's not the most complex or mind altering IPA out there, but it's certainly far from the bottom. It has a bit of an Oskar Blues vibe going on.

A 355ml bottle with a bottling date of May 2014. Purchased a little while back from Trembling Madness in York.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber hue with plentiful floating sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing.

S: Aroma of sharp, fruity hops with hints of lime, citrus, mild tropical fruit, a touch of pine, grass/hay, caramel malt, earthy yeast and faint stewed hops. Delicious.

T: Tastes of intense aromatic hops with a malty backbone and a stinging bitter finish. Notes of grapefruit, orange peel, citrus, pine resin, mild tropical fruit, grass/hay, caramel malt, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a strident, hoppy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with light carbonation and good body. Slightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, earthy yeast and mild caramel malt.

O: Very tasty and nicely balanced. A textbook American IPA. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour have excellent hop presence. Plenty of fruity/piny notes underpinned by caramel malt and earthy yeast. Body is OK. Goes down a treat - well worth sampling if you have the chance.

Very powerful, sipping beer, feel it after a swallow, better once foam settles.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a DFH IPA glass. The bottle was stored in a fridge at roughly 45 degrees and purchased as soon as the beer released –drank within 2 months from bottling date. The pour is hazy dark amber in color, two finger carbonated head with cream color, the head sticks for a while until it subdues to a thin foamy crust that still covers the entire surface of the glass. As you drink the beer, the head leaves a short-lived patchy decorative lacing.

Initially, the aroma is a citrusy in-your-face smell that stings with zesty grapefruit and lime, behind it a honey aroma evolves as your senses pick up the spectrum of its flavors. After a few times smelling the brew, I get a very dank aroma consisting of papaya and mango – just as you would smell the basket of ripened fruit containing these at a farmer’s market. The taste is a caramel sweet and fruity (mango, papaya and grapefruit) initially, leading to a very bitter finish that is not as hop-forward as I expected. In fact, to my surprise, there wasn’t much of a hop presence which is uncharacteristic of PNW IPAs – doubtful if due to “bottled to drank” elapsed time but possible.

Mouthfeel is creamier than I would’ve thought – I expected this being a PNW IPA with 7% ABV it would be crisp and with more carbonation (let alone hoppier). The mouthfeel, in my opinion, makes the dankness and ripened fruit flavors more pronounced effectively minimizing the minute hop flavor.

Overall – I was not too impressed with this offering although it’s not bad either. Not something I would seek out or buy again but at the same time I wouldn’t shy away from it if offered.
