Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. 02/12/09.
Pours a clear golden orange color with a thin half-finger white head which quickly dropped to a thin layer. Aroma is of grassy hops and a bit of sweet malt.
Taste starts with sweet malty biscuit and slight grapefruit, and finishes with a bitter kick of grassy hops. That's about it - nothing complex, but pretty well-balanced and simply good. Feel is medium-bodied with plenty of carbonation. The finish is slightly dry. Drinkability is pretty good. It's refreshing and not overly bitter.
This would make a pretty good gateway IPA.

Poured into pint glass.
A: Pours a very clear, light goldish-copper color with a one finger off-white head from a pretty vigorous pour. Some lacing, but minimal.
S: The hop aroma is pleasant but mild for the style. Floral, citric hop notes tending toward tangerine and becoming more orange with warmth. Very light hints of malt on the nose, but not much.
T: The hop bitterness is apparent as it opens with some nice grainy notes emerging on the midpalate. The hop profile is actually quite tasty with moderate citric flavors and a bitterness that's firm but on the lighter end for the style. But that's ok because the malt flavors are also subdued, though pleasant, with a light sweetness and crackery hints on the finish and the fade.
M: Light to medium bodied with good carbonation and a light slickness.
D: This is a very drinkable beer, and that's the area in which this beer shines. It's flavor is good but not at the intensity level of the best IPAs. Clearly it was made to be easy to drink, and it succeeds there. Very sessionable. Everything works well here. I'll be buying this again, especially given its low price point.
Overall, it's not going to compete with the big boys of the IPA world, but it's not trying to, and I like it for that. Sometimes I want a good, inexpensive brew and this will fit the bill.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Gold color, small head. Grassy, floral aroma. Citrus taste. Decent beer to drink. I've had better IPAs, but this was still an OK example.
Other reviews have called this an entry-level IPA. I think it's a cut above that, and it certainly won't shred your palate.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden with a medium sized white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.
The aroma is bready malts, and fruity, floral hops. There's a bit of DMS.
The flavor is sweet bready malts with a peppery hop finish. The mouthfeel is pretty thin and watery.
Overall, an OK IPA, nothing special. It is pretty mellow and subdued.

Pours a cloudy orange with a one finger head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is pine and citrus hops. Taste is primarily piney hops but there is enough grapefruit there to keep it refreshing and give a little pleasant sweetness. Not as resiny as some other piney IPAs. Mouthfeel is nice, not too clingy. Very drinkable IPA. Not my favorte, but very good.

The beer pours a yellow-orange color with a very small white head. The aroma is bread and papaya, but it is very faint. There is hardly any aroma at all. The flavor is stronger, but is still not too great. I get some orange and pine from the hops, as well as some bready malt. There is also some other tropical fruits present in the flavor such as mango and papaya. Low bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

This beer should be renamed "Eh". Decent color, decent aroma ... Actually the aroma is a little off-putting. A touch medicinally sweet, although this is not reflected in the taste. The body is fairly thin for an IPA - actually I would probably categorize this as an APA considering it is fairly light on malt and hop flavor. All in all pretty much what I would expect from the people who brought us the flavorless ubiquitous Widmer Hefeweizen.

TAp @ O'Briens. Poured clear orange-yellow with a short-lived white head. Good lacing, though. Lively citrus aroma dominated by grapefruit and tangerine. More sweet than sour. Slick, carbonated mouthfeel with a crisp finish. Pleasant hop profile with a nice blalance of bitterness versus the citrus sweet. Nice malt backbone without becoming sticky. Very drinkable and very refreshing. Nice surprise from these guys.

Had this for the first time w/ elrogish. Cool little pour, dark amber. Heavy lace. Nice hop aroma, seems like the traditional variety, cascade, chinook, centennial.
Taste, good beer, average citrus hoppy, not bracingly bitter, enough malt to give it a good chewy feel while remaining dry and only positive aftertaste consisting of a mildly hoppy mouthfeel. Caramel. This is a good ipa you can give to people who are ready for bigger and better things from beer. Very pleasant, better than average price for these.

I had originally reviewed this under "Halo". It was not "Halo", but "Broken Halo".
Here goes, again....
Looks sunshine yellowy/orangy , nice head disappeared fast, feathery lacing.
Citrus and grapefruit, heavy on the grapefruit
Same on the taste, refreshing bittery hoppy grapefriut, a little malty sweetness.
I could drink the hell out this, epecially on a warm day. The only problem is that I've only seen it one time at our local Sam's Club in a varity pack. They (Sam's) threw temptation at me, got me hooked and took it away. Typical Sam's!
This makes one fine summer refresher. I wish I could get some more. I'll have to find another way.

Moderate crystal clear orange. Full finger of craggy white head that melts to a sticky top covering lacing.
Aroma is pure fresh green hops.
The taste reminds me of their W'06 but without the sweet malt...hops seem identical. Clean soft carbonation filled with fresh citrus hops...finishing to light grapefruit.
What happened to summer now that I finally have this beer???
Good stuff...lots of personality....nice hops 'burps'
12oz bottle from weefisheads via trade because I begged him for months. hahaha Thanks, David

A: yellowish gold color, lifeless in the glass and no head retention. Just large blobs of foam floating around the perimeter of the glass. A decent look overall
S: hops and more hops. Fruity floral and grassy nose, touch of sweetness
T: great hopped fruit characters of grapefruit, oranges, a squeeze of lemon with some fresh pine. A great complimenting sweetness fits the bill perfect. I can even pull out some pineapple notes after a few sips. It maintains a dry characters throughout with the malty caramelized grains hidden in the back
M: mild smoothness, plenty of zest and bite, hops float about in the oily, dry finish
D: banging solid IPA, this one is a great example of the kind, pretty good stuff. This is just a real tight offering

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle, bought in a six-pack.
Appearance - Clear and golden ale with a soapy white foam that doesn't retain long but does lace nicely.
Smell - Very floral hops with strong pine scents.
Taste - Crisp and clean with a good pine and citrus hops bite. A very tasty IPA with a good clean and fresh flavor.
Mouth feel - Crisp and slightly bitter up front, give way to a nice smooth citrus hopped aftertaste.
Drinkability - A perfect ABV for this style and very drinkable. I will definitely buy this again, as it's one of the better American IPA's I've tried (and I've tried quite a few).

This beer pours a golden color with good carbonation. It has a citrus/grapefruit smell to it.The head starts out thick but goes away quickly. There is a nice lacing going on here(trying it in a pint glass right now).. I am not a big fan of citrus flavors but this one is pretty good. Not bad at all.

It would be very hard to argue against Broken Halo unless you demand for your beer to be clear; and you know how the brothers love their yeast! It's hazy golden-orange body looks great in the glass, and it exhibits fine head retention and lacing. The nose is quite welcoming with gentle, but very fruity citrus, and a mild note of sweetish malt. The body is delicately crisp and smooth with a very fine bubbled, moderate carbonation. The flavor is bursting with a combination of fruity citrus (mainly grapefruit, but also tangerine and subtle pineapple), grainy and lightly caramelish malt, and an underbelly of gently piney hop. The bitterness is solid but smooth, and anchors it nicely in the finish as the hops leave the palate with a zing of zippy citrus. It's remarkably well-balanced and drinkable without any faults at all. Quite nice!

The newest year-round addition to the Widmer lineup is a pleasant surprise. Not bland and not a German derivative, Broken Halo is instead an excellent effort at a west coast IPA. Pours a fairly clear golden-amber hue topped by one finger of creamy, off-white head that lingers a few minutes before leaving a few wisps of lacing on the glass. Crisp aroma of tangy, floral hops and some mild ale yeast. Palate is again tangy, floral hops with some light malt. Notes of grapefruit and mown grass pop up towards the fairly astringent finish. Body is nice and and a bit creamy, with decent carbonation. A good springtime beer, and a step up from some of this brewery's offerings.

It might be a little stronger than some but it doesn't make a different in taste. In fact this IPA seems to be almost too smooth sometimes.
Nice flavor a little less hoppy than I would usually expect...
Less likely to get some nasty after-taste and it burps nicely too..
Sometimes I taste it twice, but I guess I got my dad's stomach..
This is my other "go-to" beer besides Bridgeport IPA.

My dad had bought a mix Widmer pack from Costco and he doesn't like IPA's so whenever I go to my parents house my dad has some beers waiting for me.
Pours a pretty nice amber color but no head or lacing.
The smell is the best part of this beer. It actually has a pretty decent IPA aroma with a nice amount of pine and citrus hops. Little bit of lager smell to it.
Tastes as it smells but the hop flavor is lacking. I don't like the lager taste in there that much. It's like a malty lager mixed with a lot of hops. It's alright tasting but not my prefrance.
Mouthfeel is ok. The lager feel to it is throwing me off.
Overall an easy drinking IPA but there are many better choices out there.

Date of 28 mar 06, assume that's a bottled on date since the beer is pretty new (as far as I know) Pours honey to bronze with a 2 fingers+ fluffy offwhite head and slightly effervescent. Good lacing and head retention
Smell: Honey, floral & spicy hops
Taste: Grapefruiity, puckery hops up front & then some fruittiness. finishes fruity and hoppy.
MF: Good balance and carbonation, a little to much hop emphasis
A little too grapefruitty to drink all day, but a pretty simple and
enjoyable AIPA. Another solid, but not super great beer from widemer. Nothing wrong with being consitently good!

From a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass, the brew pours a hazy lemon/orange in color. A thin forced head settles into a surface cap within a minute or so, and later just a ring.
Citrus hops on the nose blend with some notable sweet notes. Hop nose is a bit thin for the style but does improve slightly with some warming and agitation.
Rather subdued and slightly sweet on the tongue with a light and brief hop bitterness on the finish. Other than the bitterness the brew hardly resembles an IPA in flavor. Smooth and unoffensive but in no way inspiring. A bit of a reach to label this an IPA, more of a buttery Pale Ale.

Poured from the bottle with minimal head that quickly became no head. Good lacing on the glass as I drank.
Nice citrus and slight pine scent, as an IPA should.
The bitterness was a little more than expected and maybe a little harsh for this beer, didn't seem fully balanced with the body.
Overall an average IPA.

Pours out a slightly hazed bronze/gold with a thin head that piddles out a bit. Nice lacing patterns. Smells mostly citrusy with a little pine kick and a general malty sweetness that hits the nose lightly. Light bodied malt sweetness is up front then comes a pretty big hop presence. Lots of citrus and a good dose of pine as well as solid bitterness. Finishes with some ale fruitiness. Throughout, this has a grainy bite to it that I'm not fond of. Mouthfeel is not cumbersome and offers a carbonation that's a bit lively. Gets a bit too sweet for a session.
