Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue XI:

Great formation of head with great retention to support it, brownish amber color that is bright and clear. Big and flamboyant hop nose of pine resin, grapefruit zest, hemp seeds and a hint of dark tobacco. All of that barely lets the malt transmit anything to the aroma. Creamy, smooth, medium body. Whoa, momma, yes indeed there are some hops here, and what we mean by "some," is a lot. Sporting an Ameri-hop character throughout it starts with a big splash of bitterness and then moves more into flavoring with suggestions of evergreen, grapefruit rind, hemp oil and fresh cut grass. The malt backbone is pretty damn sturdy and while it may be shadowed by the hops, it mostly lays a blankets of caramel and toasted grain on the palate. A tad fruity with a clean, warming alcohol middle to end; quick flash of raisins and plums. Finishes a little bitter and leans toward dry.

A lovely holiday beer, very well balanced and straight, aimed at the style. The Christmas Goose may have met its match.

A: Darkish ruby amber, almost clear with a dissipated off white head.
S: Initially onions but it soon gives way to floral hops, English in character.
T: In the mouth the hops tastes more American with that classic orange peel profile but overall it drinks like an English bitter. Nice and sharp with an astute malt backbone which leaves a nice aftertaste, again reminiscent of English bitter. Too sharp for a session beer but on cask would be a different story.
M: Sharp and prickly. It's got heartburn written all over it.
O: Very nice. I'd love to try it on cask.

Lovely deep red color, very clear, Nice 2 finger head, very persistent with sticky lacing all the way to the bottom of the glass

Aroma is light, biscuit, floral and spice

Taste is bold, hops, winter spice, citrus, caramel malts

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy.

Basically a red IPA with some tweaks, nicely bitter with more significant body than I expected. Visually gorgeous, a bit thin on aroma. One of the better Widdy brews I've come across the past few years.

Great beer overall, as would be expected from a brewery such as Widmer Bros. Prototypical flavors abound for the style, malts, vanilla, caramel, some winter spices, with undertones of hops (west coast) and booze carried throughout. Beautiful nose too.

Poured from a bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Dark amber, with nice thick and light colored head. The head lasted a very long time, and left a nice coating on the inside of the glass.

Smell: Pleasant, with a strong hops bitterness in the aroma. There is some citrus, herbs, and spicy aromas, but the hops dominate.

Taste: A nice mix of hops, citrus, malt, and spicy flavors, that make for an interesting and complex drink. Drinks much like a Pale Ale. The label lists caramel and chocolate matls, but the hops dominate this beer. There is a nice after-taste, that lasts for a while but not too long.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and crisp, with a medium body.

Overall: This is an interesting Winter Ale. Not what I was expecting, but good.
