S- understated but interesting. Subtle earthy hops.
T-an interesting blend of roasted malt and pine hops.
M- very smooth. No carbonation noted.
O- an interesting IPA mixed with a dark beer.

Poured into a standard pint a deep dark brown with a one finger beige colored head that never really settles completely.Wow love the big resiny/prickly hops in the nose, molasses and roast out the profile out, very nice.Dry and roasty with a healthy doe of resiny hops on the palate,a little molasses-like sweetness comes into play as it warms, but it stays on the dryer side.I think this a great ABA,its Pacific northwest in its big hop notes,a damn good beer.

Pours black as the name suggests, some brown hints along the top and very edges; tan head settles to a thin layer, medium lacing down the glass. Aroma starts off sticky, heavy, and dank with heavy hop oils and resinous layers unfolding left and right. The taste follows right through, overtaken by a solid hop profile; dank, oily, resinous. Slightly peppery, very faint citrus flavors, wet grapefruit rinds. Overall the hops are mostly wet and spicy. The backbone of this beer is very malty and it does a nice job of toning down the hops. Slight roasted character in the background; leaves a bready aftertaste which is very reminiscent of dry rye bread. Medium body, medium-high carbonation, just a touch of stickiness on the palate.

Not a bad beer at all. Black IPA's always surprise me, even though I know what to expect. It's like that purple colored Ketchup. Tastes like ketchup, but it just looks weird. Nice hop profile and a good balance with the roasted malts. Definitely a better brew than I was expecting.

Pours a nice deep black with some dark brown edges along with a khaki head that leaves some spotty lacing as it falls. Aromas kick off with some solid roasted malts and a blast of floral and citric hops with Cascades taking their place nicely. Quite enjoyable with a cocoa/coffee undertone.

First sip brings tasty roasted malts upfront with touches of coffee, cocoa and caramel. The hops flow in quickly bringing citric and floral accents along with a nice dose of bitterness. Good balance overall as it finishes with some lingering hops.

Mouthfeel is smooth and medium bodied with good carbonation - just an easy drinking brew overall. A solid black IPA that I was glad I picked up and tried. Hope Widmer keeps brewing this one.

Bottled Feb 02 11
Cool-looking bottle; I liked how it tapered.
In a pint glass the beer was black with a medium-sized tan head. Abundant lace.
Roasted malt aroma, a little coffee. Lots of floral/herbal hops.
Coffee and chocolate taste. Good piney hops.
A smooth, balanced beer.
Would drink this anytime.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a smallish creamy light tan head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is roasted malts and some piney fruity hops.

The flavor is roasted / charred malts and a little fruit with a good sized burnt, piney bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and kind of watery.

Overall, a decent black IPA...a bit pricey at $9 for a 4 pack though.

A --- deep black with a nice 1/2" head

S --- malts, raisins, grass

T --- caramel, coffee, roasted malts

M --- light body, watery, light carbonation

O --- Disappointing. Compared to all the other solid Black IPAs on the market this one doesn't measure up. It's closer to a roasty Porter than an IPA. Not crazy about it.

12oz brown bottle with a bottled on date on the label.

Froth walks up the glass, black color admits to not being pitch. Roasted aroma is soft, hops aim at floral and mild resin pine ... smells great. Yeah, it is smooth ... creamy with a big enough body for this fresh new style. Hops don't let go even though the flavors drop from its balance bitterness to a slow pull of herbal and wild flower flavor. Roasted malt feigns coffee but slowly pulls back. Bit of fruit and spice in the middle. Unsweetened cocoa and oily hop in the semi-dry end.

Yes, labeled as a Black IPA but all brewers should run with the re-named "American Black Ale" style and stay away from Black IPA all together. Regardless, very tasty and very easy to drink.

12 ounce bottle, "Feb 2 11" on the label, bottled on date??

Pours real dark brown, dark mocha head. Nice fine lacing. Earthy nose with some lite citric hop notes.

Easy drinking dark ale, hops are mutted, nice smooth chocolate notes, more earth.

Pleasant and nicely balanced. Quite smooth over the tongue.

Nothing real special going on here, but this is a well crafted and quite sessionable brew.

Appearance: 1/3 inch head, dark brown in color, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: chocolate, wood, floral and pine hops

Taste: big pine hops with some floral hops in the mix, charred malt, and some chocolate

Mouthfeel: high carbonation, light body, bitter with some sweetness in the back

Overall: A very drinkable black ipa. I could drink a couple of these. I tend to like this style and this is a good representation. My favorite from the brewery so far.

The beer pours black with a cream-colored head. The aroma is piney hops with some roasted malts. The flavor is mainly piney hops, but there is some citrus hops in there as well. There is also a roasted malt backbone which is very interesting. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Not being a huge IPA fan, but generally a fan of darker bitter beers, this selection caught my attention. It did not disappoint.
Appearance: pours smooth, decent amount of head but more thin and airy than most dark beers. The beer itself was deep brown-black like a porter. Impressive. The sort of beer that makes Bud Light defenders wince just looking at it.
Smell: I'll be honest, I didn't take an intentional smell until the beer was mostly gone. Nothing struck me by that point.
Taste: great hop/malt balance. The full taste palate seems to endure, rather than having stage 1, stage 2 effect. The maltiness lingers hand in hand with the hops. Strong roasted barley presence.
Mouthfeel: more lively than it looks; a bit more active than a porter it resembles visually.
Drinkability: smooth on the tongue, good aftertaste balance makes it a fine slow sipper. Overall taste makes you happy to tip more often.

A definite winner. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark ales, porters, and hops.

Drank this with elrogish up in WA last week, thanks bro. Can I call it light black? Easy enough to see through, average viscosity, average stuff. Aroma was pretty plain, didn't come across hoppy or fruity.

Taste, just right down the middle. Bitter, hoppy, but pedestrian. No major discernable flavor, but no off flavor. Not roasty, coffee, chocolate, don't taste them. Maybe a mild toffeeness to it. Would put the ibus around 45. Dry finish, yet smooth enough for easy drinking. A decent beer at a good price. Kind of a go to for people new to the black ale emerging phenomenon.
