On tap at the crappy Reno Blues & Brews festival. Aside from Lagunitas offerings and this beer, it was an underwhelming festival.

Pours a copper color, 1" white head, decent lace on the plastic cup they give you. Nice aroma of grapefruit and hops.

Taste, mmm, the grapefruit is there, but soft, like pink grapefruit with a tiny bit of sugar to take the bitter sting away. Still plenty of bitterness. Just like the X-114 otherwise.

I had this a month or so later, and man, it was a shell of its former self. Its a bummer so many places have old ass Widmer ipa's on the shelf, because they are really good when fresh. For instance, its the end of September right now. My local Safeway has Spiced IPA from Widmer in its cooler, born on date, Jan 7, 2012. Ugh.

Little head on a clear golden body. Excellent lacing. Earthy and fruity hop aroma and some breads and grain. Pine and floral hops with subtle citrus tartness on a pale malt base. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not too bad. Widmer beers are growing on me.

On tap at Sawmill Tap Room on 8/15/12.

A - bright orange with a soft, white head that has good retention

S - huge grapefruit aromas, very faint malt

T - grapefruit, light malt, very faint pine

M - medium bodied, well carbonated, smooth

This is a solid, very drinkable beer, but it's simple and one-dimensional. The grapefruit-citrus notes are all that this has to offer. It wasn't bad, but in the end I wouldn't want more than one.

A decent enough IPA from Widmer Brothers, on tap at Top Hops, NYC. Lightly hazed golden colored body with a small, slowly settling white head and nice enough lace. Aroma is highly citrusy; lots of grapefruit, peel, juice, and pith, citra hops give a slightly catty twist to the nose. Some pine and gently sweet grainy malt.

Taste is all about the grapefruit; it’s pretty vivid, juicy, and moderately bitter. The pith and peel flavors linger in the mouth after the swallow. Muted sweetness and grainy malt character, drying finish. Again a touch of pine mixed in under all the citrus. Not super complex or nuanced but the addition of the grapefruit makes the hops pop a bit and give this a vivid and fresh flavor that’s pretty appealing.

Medium to slightly light bodied; solid carbonation; just a little bit of creaminess in the feel. Goes down nice and easy. A tasty and drinkable IPA for grapefruit fans. Not a world-beater by a pleasant surprise nonetheless.

Nice yellow ale with a loose white foam that falls in a minute or two. Smells like grapefruit with some resin, but mostly grapefruit. Really a nice nose to me with the amount of fruit here. Flavor is bitter and, again, carries a profound amount of bittersweet grapefruit meat flavor. There are some bitter, grassy tones, but mostly the grapefruit is there with a hint of bitterness underneath and a slightly alcoholic temperature. Medium bodied with moderately hi carb and a forgetable finish. Nice beer, had two pints.

This tied for my favorite beer at GABF last night. I can't comment much on appearance based on the sampler cup, but the combination of Citra hops and grapefruit peel was amazing. The aroma was unmistakably Citra, but there was a nice amount of grapefruit in the flavor. I would have never thought of using them together but it worked perfectly. Definitely not a standard IPA but excellent nonetheless.

Tasted from tap at Oregon Brewers' Festival.

Clear golden hue, not hazy, good level of head. Smells better than it tastes. Lots of fresh hops and citrus. A bit over the top with hops, pretty much all you can taste. Finishes a little too rough and tannic. Overall a good beer but not a stand out compared to other local IPAs.

12 oz bottle with May 2012 date. Pours hazy orange with a long lasting, foamy, white head and lively carbonation. Body is medium and crisp. Biscuit malt, earthy hops and some fruity and citrusy notes. Finish is long and slightly grapefruity. Quite mellow and interesting brew after aging.

Appearance: Golden, clear; medium frothy head, long lasting

Aroma: Slight malt and bread; overwhelmingly grapefruit; candy sugar

Taste: Malty, hoppy bite on start; quickly moves to grapefruit notes in the mid; finishes hoppy and bitter on the end; lingering hops finish it out; pretty refreshing overall, but quickly tiring

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Served in a pint glass - 12oz bottle

I came to the party a little late on this one, I've enjoyed Widmer Bros Rotator series, but somehow missed this release. I got my first 6-pack in November and found another on the shelves in late december....oh well

A - Golden color, with 1 finger head and decent lacing

S - It hits you with the citrusy smell of grapefruit right off the pour. My mouth started to water before I could get the glass to my mouth.

T - Nice upfront grapefruit, a little malt in the middle and some hop bite at the end. I loved reading about the brewing and the use of the grapefruit peels in the process. I was already a fan of the X-114, so throwing a little grapefruit in the mix only upped the level of enjoyment for me.

M - Good mouthfeel, I like the carbonation as well.

O - This is a favorite IPA for me. I hope it comes back again, not sure where the company is going with this rotator series, if they will continue to experiment, or keep putting out the same. I really hope Shaddock makes a return, one of my favorite IPA's I've had in awhile.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped 08:37NH-JUN2012. Sampled on December 8, 2012 so I don't know if the June 2012 date is a bottling date or an expiration date.

The pour is pale copper to orange with the slightest haze and a fuzzy white head.

The aroma is pleasantly hopped with floral notes galore and a slight pale malt or bready ester.

The body is pleasingly medium with a creamy feel on my tongue.

The taste is very much like the aroma with a decent dose of floral hops through and through and a lingering, but modest bitterness at the end. This is a well done American IPA.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a very thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains very fruity citrus, piney hops and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with a strong grapefruit-led citrus sweetness that is quickly followed by a strong but not over-powering hops bitterness. The hops presence is on the thin side for the style but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer to drink for a while but there are others in the style I would choose first.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

So, thanks to Wikipedia, I discovered that shaddock refers to grapefruit. And Soviet missiles. Fair enough. This stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger or so of off-white foam. The nose comprises grapefruit peel, decidedly sweet caramel, and a touch of pine resin. The taste focuses on the pine and the grapefruit (particularly the peel here), with the caramel fading a bit, though still sticking around with a diminished sweetness. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a solid IPA, nothing too major or anything, but one that's generally enjoyable.

Poured into a pint glass
A: Aggressive pour yields 1 finger of tight, just off-white head with good to great retention. Crystal clear brass colored liquid. Nearly perfect.
S: Man Candy - candied pineapple, hint of grapefruit, mango, passion fruit. Slight ginger maybe. Slight boozy ester underneath knocks it down from perfection.
T: Tart and bitter grapefruit peel right up front. Some faint biscuit in the open as well. Slight ester with faint cardboard afterwards in the middle. Very bitter; a bit more balance would be nice. Later sips become balanced. Grapefruit rind is still the dominant flavor. Slight lime is present maybe.
M: Strong bite up front, but it fades into the background later on. Creamy even after a while.
O: Quite enjoyable. I'd order another and buy 6. I'm glad the balance increases with time. Isn't necessarily better than X-114, but it's damn good!

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a light orange/amber with a medium white head, some solid lace.

S: Grassy, very green and weedy, dandelion greens, some pink grapefruit.

T: Lemon and citrus, definite grapefruit notes. A floral IPA, the citrus peel is heavy and is marked difference from what I'm expect from the nose. Solid malt character as well.

M: Medium-bodied, soft frothy carbonation though it can be crisp at times, fairly mild aftertaste for the style.

O: A well made IPA, I like the idea of actually adding grapefruit to the beer instead of just relying on hops. Good price, the IPA fan should pick this up.

This beer has a pleasant fruity nose on it and taste quite refreshing a smooth. Real easy drinking. I'd pretty much call it a hoppy witte beer the bitterness is very subtle. The taste notes are orange and grapefruit with a nice juiciness to it. Id really recommend it as a drinkable summer session beer with an easy drinking nature.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Hazy golden color with a slight orange tint with a small white head that dissipates quickly and leaves behind a ring of lace.

Smell: Tropical fruits, grapefruit and a bit of pine with just a hint of orange and biscuit.

Taste: Begins with citric flavors and rounded, earthy bitterness. Rounds out to biscuit and finishes with a strong piney bitterness that also has citrus peel notes.

Mouthfeel: Lighter in body with sharp carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: A pretty good IPA overall, but it just seems as though something is missing- I can't quite put my finger on it. Definitely worthy and drinkable, though.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a golden amber color with a one finger white head. The head has huge carbonation bubbles and fades over time to give a medium to light amount of lacing.

Smell - The aroma is on the lighter side, but is heaviest of a grapefruit citrus and earthy hop aroma. Mixed with the hop aromas are some light aromas of a biscuit nature as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a biscuit and grapefruit hop flavor with a light level of sweetness. As the taste advances some notes of a earthy nature come to the tongue. When the earthy hop comes the sweetness diminishes a bit. While the earthy hop shows up midway through, it is lost at the end as more citrus grapefruit hop come to the tongue. With these hop flavors are some tangerine citrus and caramel sweetness that come to the tongue. Overall these create a lightly bitter but sweeter citrus flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly above average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The creaminess accentuates the hop flavors quite well and even though they are somewhat lighter, it makes them more pronounces.

Overall - Not too bad. It is somewhat sweeter overall but not too much so to take away from the hop flavors.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is clear, golden-tangerine in color with a small white head on top. Lots of fine-bubbled carbonation rising - all the way to the bottom of the glass. Some splotchy lace on the way down.

S: Grapefruit & grapefruit pith over a faintly sweet malt foundation.

T: A touch of bready malt underneath, but then it's all about the citrus and grapefruit. Finishes with a grapefruity, lemony bitterness that lingers on the palate.

M: Pretty creamy; those fine bubbles of carbonation soften the feel. Call it light-to-medium in heft.

O: Very good stuff. I know it seems like "cheating" to add grapefruit peels to get that citrusy, grapefruity taste (instead of just relying on the hops), but I don't care - it works.

A: Truly beautiful darker gold with a lovely, large white head that retains and leaves great lacing; truly impressive.

S: Grapefruit...go figure...touch of citrus and tropical fruitiness, tea leaf, citrus pith and rind.

T: Taste follows the nose, dominant grapefruit character with suggestions of tropical fruit, orange, and grapefruit rind...modest hints of pine...nice pulling bitter finish...

MF: Good body for an IPA, bitter light mouthfeel with medium to low carbonation.

O: This is a pretty good beer.

12-oz. bottle into a pint glass at my house on Sept. 20, 2012 (purchased at Vons in Mission Gorge (San Diego, Calif.) for a 6-pack price of $8.99 (I think) (with card) on Sept. 19, 2012)). About a finger of head. Honey golden with white head. Average-to-below retention all-around.

Smelled a gigantic whiff of grapefruit citrus hops. Also some lemon and floral notes. A bit bitter, but it all comes together nice.

Tasted close to the nose, but didn’t have the same impact as the nose. Got that grapefruit taste in the front, which gave way to a huge bitter aftertaste. Could almost taste the grapefruit seeds. Got a slight taste of floral hops as well.

Light body. Thin texture. Average-to-above average carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

A pretty good beer overall. I enjoyed it, but I don’t know how I’ll enjoy the other five.

From the freshness dated 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass produces an extremely clear amber body with a thin cap of foam, lively carbonation creates trails of small bubbles rising, there is some lacing too, pretty nice.
Aroma is grapefruit forward (no surprise there) some floral hop presence along with a slight wet grass.
Taste is all about the grapefruit here bitter/clean with very little malt sweetness, reminds me of a vodka greyhound with only half the vodka.Refreshing nonetheless and enjoyable, slight biscuit on the end.
Simple, yet just right to quench a thirst.

Bottled on August 12 2012. Poured into a nonic a dull light to medium golden with a thinner white head atop. The grapefruit rind comes through in the nose along with tropical fruitiness from the hops, not much malt except for a little dryer crispness. The grapefruit again plays a large on the palate with some stone fruit and a tinge of sweet alcohol, the malt base is somewhat dry and crisp.A solid offering here,it makes since to put grapefruit rind in an American IPA,it enhances the hop flavors.
