Served in a Sam Adams signature pint glass. Vintage bottle October 2010 (limited release #3), poured 10/29/2012.

Appearance: Pours a semi-cloudy amber with heavy bubbles (small) on the body. Had slightly off white about 1/3" at best off a vigorous pour.

Smell: Very nice bourbon scent. Not too overwhelming but obviously a little room for improvement.

Taste: Complex and good. It has a light lager feel to it offset with a sweet taste that reminds you of a borderline carbonated whiskey,. It is lightly bitter but feels heavy in alcohol because of the bourbon taste that goes with it.

Mouth: Strongly sticky, you lay this glass down and you feel the after taste of brown sugar but of what real beer is supposed to taste like.

Overall: A beastly beer, I am not crazy to begin with on the bourbon or oaked aged beers but this one is a gem. I know there are different versions that might not live up to the expectations of this one aged two years just right did it for me. I have had this bottle for about a year and thought it was time. Enjoy and drink up....Salud!

22 ounce bottle into snifter; 2012 vintage, bottled on 8/28/2012. Pours fairly clear reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, pear, vanilla, oak, clove, bourbon, floral, grass, slight pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, pear, vanilla, oak, clove, bourbon, floral, grass, slight pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Slight earthy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, vanilla, oak, clove, bourbon, floral, grass, and toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and moderate robustness of dark malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate hop flavors; with a nice malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice barrel aged strong ale. Good balance and complexity of malt, barrel, and light-moderate hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

This is one of the few times I'm going to agree with the rating as spot on. About an 80% overall score for this one. I've had my fair share of bourbon aged beers and this falls short in so many ways. First of all it's not a stout so don't expect one. It pour s a medium transparent brown color not a lot of carbonation in the liquid nor head on top. Sweet bouquet where I pick up some notes of oats and barley. The initial sip is watery. Doesn't seem like a 9%+ abv beer. Not much flavor lingers on the tounge and almost no taste of bourbon. All hype and no deliver. Too much bark and not enough bite for this beer. Seems like I paid $13 simply for the wax they put on the top of the bottle.

2013 Widmer Barrel Aged Brrrbon

A- pour yields a 1-1/2 finger off white/light tan head. Recedes quick leaving spotty lacing. Beer is ruddy brown with copper hues. 3.5

S- at cellar temperature the smells are very subdued. Some light bourbon, brown sugar, light spice, light hops. Doesn't improve much as it warms. 3.25

T- at cellar temp it's got bourbon in the forefront. But it is not the rich bourbon, it's a bit hot and the alcohol shows a lot. There is a nice wood presence. Base beer is alright. Caramel malt, a certain spice, perhaps from the hops (?). The flavors come together more as it warms. 3.25

M- very thin. Carbonation is a bit higher than I like and am used to in a barrel aged beer. 3

O- nothing impressive, but good enough. Could improve with age, but with the vast amount of great bourbon barrel aged beers out there, I won't buy more to find out. 3.25

Vertical pour of the 10' 11' 12' from 22oz

Clean amber with a nice white head

10' soft oak, vanilla, weak bourbon.
11' big caramel, vanilla great balance and aroma. Honey, toffee, sweet oak
12' big bourbon and oak sweet caramel

10' fell off, not a lot of barrel presence. Light vanilla and caramel.drink em if you got em.
11' this is the best of the batch. Huge caramel and vanilla. This style really highlights the bourbon notes. I think it's a bock? Great malt sweetness gives a long finish and really masks the abv.
12' just a little harsh. The bourbon bite was more pronounced than the previous pours,as to be expected from a barrel aged beer. Nothing a little time can't render.

I have to say the 11 was the hit of the tasting and the creamy mouthfeel with the big body and killer finish made for a great sipper.

2012 Vintage

A-Pours a clear, amber color. Head is mild, it makes the beer look flat. Minimal lacing.

S-Aroma is where you'd expect it to be. Bourbon-forward with a complement of sweet, Winter Warmer aromatics. I'm actually impressed with the intensity if the oak.

T-Bourbon lays it on heavy. It doesn't seem to match well with the beer's base surprisingly. The bourbon lingers and dries out the palate. Dried out oakiness and Christmas spice. Very sweet.

M-Softer carbonation. Booze isn't very well integrated, even after a year. Too sweet. It isn't a mess but it's nearing one.

O/D-Didn't love the feel all too much but aside from that it could be worse. Bourbon seems to disagree with the other flavors.
