22 oz bottle poured into a snifter at cellar temperature.

L – Amber-brown color with a 1-finger rocky, bubbly, cream-colored head. Decent retention with some lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.

S – Caramel and toffee malts with a nice bouquet of pineapple, grapefruit, and orange hops. There’s definitely some alcohol apparent here, too, along with some subtle cherry esters. This is a really fragrant barleywine.

T – Starts off very sweet with caramel, toffee, toasted malts, cherries, and some raisins. Alcohol astringency and some medicinal phenols creep in mid-taste. The taste finishes slightly bitter with floral, citrus, and slightly herbal hops.

F – Medium-to-full-bodied with decent carbonation, a sticky and mouth-coating almost oily mouthfeel, and a mildly bitter and dry finish. Floral, citrus, and herbal hop bitterness lingers and blends with alcohol astringency and warmth.

O – This is a pretty good barleywine. The hops are very apparent in the aroma (with a good dose of Galaxy hops) but are somewhat drowned out in the taste until the very finish. Nevertheless, this was a tasty and big beer. It’s definitely a sipper, even more so than the 9.5% would suggest. Take your time with this one.

A: Dark purplish brown with a mocha head.

S: Orange, cherry and those delicious galaxy hops in the nose.

T: Slightly sweet with citrus and cherry, as well as that delicious tropical fruit flavor that galaxy hops impart. Passionfruit, mango, papaya, deliciousness.

M: Medium bodied and smoothish.

O: This is my favorite Widmer beer, which isn't saying a ton, but it's amazing. Galaxy hops ftw!

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/14/2011. Pours very hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big raisin, orange zest, pineapple, grapefruit, caramel, toast, toffee, candi sugar, biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, caramel, toast, toffee, floral, pine, grass, candi sugar, biscuit, and floral earthiness. Slight pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, citrus, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, light pine, candi sugar, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; with a great hop/malt balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately slick, smooth, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barleywine style. All around good complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Before trying this, I'll reiterate that most of the Bros Reserve series look like awesome beers from the outside, btu seem to be sub-par or mediocre, or just meh overall beers. Hopefully this will break that mold. 2011 Vintage too.

Pours a small fizzy head that barely covers the beer before disappearing fairly quickly, dark murky mahogany cranberry reddish brown colored.

Nose pretty much brings a sweet candy barleywine, lots of toffee, caramel candies, a nice touch of Belgian candi sugar on top of that, smells quite sweet and a bit syrupy, a little nutty, with more reddish candy like even slightly toasty malts. Galaxy hops are there but lighter, probably due to the age on it, a little spicy, little grassy, touch of a passion fruit like tropical fruit, but very muted (probably due to age). The age does bring a hint of soft aged malt character.

Taste brings more sweet malt characters, lots of toffee again, candy, caramel, a bit nutty like candied nuts almost, and even a little molasses. Later on the taste as it warms, a bit of Belgian candi sugar even, which also brings some booze, mostly clean booze but warmth, slight tingle, and hint of ester like. Chewy malts lead into bitterness, a fair bitter hop character, hint of tropical fruit like, bit spicy and fruity, but the hops again seem subdued to do age. The malts get quite soft and chewy like, aged malt feel that melds well with the booze. Finish brings more booze, warming tingly booze, with more sweet malts, toffee, nutty, caramel, etc, with more spicy slightly fruity hops that linger for quite a while.

Mouth is fuller bod, decent fluffy carb, and plenty of carbonation.

Overall much better than I expected, nice aged malts, lots of sweet characters that meld well with the booze which comes on hot even for 2+ year old beer, the hops seemed like they would have been great except it's a bit too much age for them, but the booze also seems like it would have been way too hot for the fresh beer.

(Served in a snifter)
Limited release #4 Spring 2011
A- This beer pours a dense hazy glowing brown body with a mass of yellowish-white bubbles that last a bit before fading to a thin film.

S- The nice caramel malt has a hint of sweetness and a faint buttery diacetyl to it with some British yeast ester qualities in the finish.

T- The dark toffee notes are slightly sweet with some coffee malt flavors underneath and a pungent woody green hop flavor in the finish. The bitterness grows a bit in the aftertaste.

M- The medium mouthfeel has no real alcohol heat and a scrubbing fizz that hits in the back of the throat.

O- This beer has a nice malt flavor but it is not really luscious like a typical barleywine and the sweetness is soft compared to the bigger pungent bitterness.
