I am not a summer brew fan, but I thought I might taste this one.
It poured a clear light gold and there was little head, and whatever little there was, dissipated immediately. Very little lacing. Looked very flat.
The smell gave me a better impression, with nice citrus and hop notes.
The taste therefore was a little weak, since we had the citrus fruit notes up front, then some bread and grain in the middle and a weak hop flavor at the end. Good balance, but to faint and weak for my taste. But I know it is supposed to be a summer brew.

12oz bottle with a Bottle On Date of Apr 22 2011. Pours a translucent very light golden color with almost no head. Very minimal lacing. Aroma has a nice amount of citrus and tropical fruits. Good amount of hops in the nose. Taste has a lot less hop flavor than I thought there would be. Faint citrus taste. Flavor has more breadiness and malt flavor. Light and watery with a thin mouthfeel. This beer let me down. The aroma was really good but the taste was lacking. Still an alright summer beer, but I would never get it on its own. Alright in the mix 12 pack I got it in but that is where it needs to stay.

Looks like a blonde ale, even has nice head and -lacing to it. Just a great aroma out of this one, definite citra hops, I thought this smelled as good or better than citra dipa from Kern!

Nice light bodied beer, lightly hopped, but refreshing, slick finish, just a nice clean beer. Nothing is heavy (other than the aroma), hopped just right for the minimal heft of the beer. One of my favorite beers of 2011, and easily in the top 3 session beers of the year. You get a mild citrus flavor that is totally complimented by the very lightly toasted malt presence that is kept minimal and in harmony with everything else.

Keep this coming all summer long! A little citra (hop) goes a long way.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Even with a vigorous pour, produces little head. Very nice deep golden color. Very minimal lace.

S: Sweet tropical fruits with a nice "C" hop spice. Banana, cherimoya, pineapple.

T: Mmmmm... Full body in the malt profile. Good tropical flavors persist. Light pina colada, orange and banana candy. Hop bitter is understated and hits at exactly the right point in the taste profile. Maybe not overly flavorful but very good.

M: Very viscous and well carbonated. Oily and has a salinity I rarely find in commercial brews.

D: Widmer does it right with this summer offering.

A: The pour is a slightly hazed golden straw color with a fluffy white head.

S: Floral hop notes with some subtle citrus and fruity hop aromas. Some light malt notes of bread and biscuit. A light tropical note, but not super fragrant overall.

T: The flavor has a bit more punch to it, but not substantially different. Citrus and tropical fruit hop notes with a lot of floral flavors as well. Some sweet bread and toasted malt, too.

M: Light to medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: While not an amazing beer, this is a good one to drink on a hot day.

I've kinda stayed away from Widmer Bros beers cuz I'm not real big on their Hefeweizen. But recently I checked out their Pale Ale which I like and then this Citra Blonde beer which I REALLY like!
In the category of refreshing type beers, to my taste this one is way above the rest. The gravity of this beer is just right and makes it perfect for warm summer days. It has just the right amount of sweetness and the Citra Hops give it the magic touch that sets it apart from the others. They really do give it a smell like grapefruit and provide an exceptional hop flavor without any trace of sharp bitterness. I have a feeling we're going to start seeing this hop show up in a lot of beers similar to how Cascade hops took over when they were first discovered by the microbrew crowd..
I like to vary my beer choices and buy a different selection on my way home each Friday followed by a 2nd and maybe 3rd over the weekend. I live in Seattle so I have a lot of choices and I try them all. After discovering Citra Summer Blonde I've now brought it home on three of the last four Fridays.
I find Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew--that's a lot of names!--to be very refreshing and highly flavorful. It's darn near a perfect beer!

Appearance has a light golden yellow color with a fairly crisp thin head leaving spotty lace. Smell of citra hops having a grassy note with mild malt. Taste of the citra hops are blended very well with the malt making it easy to go down. Mouthfeel is light with mild carbonation again making it easy to go down. A very tasty light brew that goes down quick making for a nice session.

Golden yellow, fluffy white head. Citrus hops on the nose. Great malt and citrus hop flavor, doesn't lay on the tongue. I've tried a dozen or so summer seasonal beers this year and this was my favorite. Very drinkable. I like that the hops are for flavor, not for bittering to any great degree, as I've tried the citra IPA from Widmer and it's pretty harsh, even for an IPA. If you ever wanted to know why they named this hop citra, try this beer, you'll read the bottle wondering if they added orange/lime/lemon, nope.

Served on-tap in a plain tumbler pint glass at Eli Cannon's in Middletown, Conn.

A: Clean, pale golden color with a two-finger head of tight carbonation bubbles that retains pretty well and leaves a bit of sticky lace. Clarity is quite good.

S: Toasted grains, bits of zesty spices and metal with a skunky, citrusy hop aroma.

T: Light, thirst-quenching toasted malt flavor throws a bit o cracker into the mix with spicy, herbal hops that impart some of that skunky, all spice and coriander flavor. Semisweet malts dry out really quickly for a bone-dry finish.

M: Light-bodied and refreshing citrus notes all but disappear in the very dry hop finish.

O: Not a bad blonde and a summer ale for hop fans. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Citra, but on this impression, I'm not a huge fan. The 4.3% ABV means you can session til the cows come home, but there may not be enough to hold the attention of most. Worth a shot this summer.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a clear gold with a soapy light white head. Fizzy look, with no lace.

S: Real nice tropical nose. Clear pineapple, with some passion fruit and mango cocktail juice from the 90s.

T: Notes of banana and bubblegum with yellow Now and Laters. Semi-sweet bready malt, with some light hopping. The tropicality comes through in the finish. A nice taste if not really full-flavoured.

M: Light-bodied, frothy, some carbonic feel.

O: Widmer continues to be one of the best value brands in beer IMO. Definitely just a beer for the summertime, I could see this being very refreshing. The Citra adds an interesting complexity and makes for a beer that's fun to drink.

I recently picked up a bottle of this one as part of a mixed six pack, and I wish I has some more. Poured a light golden color with a little white head, which quickly disappears. Good hoppy aromas here, orange zest, papaya, pineapple. On the palate, this one was light and refreshing, with more orange, pineapple and papaya.

12oz bottle of a super hoppy blonde. Bright yellow with a hint of orange. The smell is a fabulous melange of citrus, tropical fruit, and hoppiness, surprising. The taste is more fantastic citrus but at the same time it just doesnt have any oomph behind it and fades fast. The citra hops are showcased well here but I think they work better in an IPA.

Widmer Citra Summer Blonde Brew
Code: Apr 26 11 07:41 NH (50 days old)
12 oz. $1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE

Now here's a Widmer beer I can really get behind! And in case you weren't aware of it, Citra hops were cultivated by Sierra Nevada and Widmer in 2008/2009.

It's a crystal-clear, deep-golden color with yellow and orange highlights beneath a fluffy head of bright-white foam. The head retention is pretty good although the lacing could be better.

The Citra hops hit you right up-front in the nose with soft notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and maybe even some papaya. It's fresh and summery with just enough juicy hop fruitiness that it's not raspy, resinous, or overwhelming.

The rest of the beer follows in the same way. There's just enough malt to keep it interesting while still staying on the lighter side (as it is a summer beer); and the hop flavor is just enough to liven it up. It's moderately bitter and it finishes mostly dry with just a touch of residual maltiness, some lingering floral character, and a spritz of citrusy hop flavor.

It's not a beer that's mean to be complex, but the hops are interesting; and overall it's easy to drink and quite refreshing. The label reads "satisfyingly sessionable" and that's certainly true!

A: Light, gold color, clear and bright. Poured a 3 finger cloudy white head with fair retention to a thick skim. Laced the glass in random spots.

S: Sweet and citrussy. Biscuity malt character, but muted and in the background. Some grapefruit notes as well.

T: Sweet citrus and malt up front. Middle transitions quickly to a mild, earthy bitter that doesn't quite match the initial sweet citrus. Sweet malt and citrus flavors linger through the finish.

M: Light body. Ample carbonation. Light and crisp though there is sweet citrus coating on the palate.

O: Citrus and malt are the hallmark of this beer. A little shy on balance, but not cloyingingly so.

On-tap at Freshcraft in Denver, CO.

Citra arrives with a brilliant straw body and a dense bone head. The foam sticks well and leaves a good amount of lace.

Past the look, the beer is a pretty mild experience. Dry straw malts do the work up front. Bitterness is light and slightly lemony. The beer finishes dry and a little tart. Its light body and low ABV make it go down easily.

(12oz bottle from Total Wine Desert Ridge). Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a quickly dissipating head. Aroma has great citrus rind/pith notes: guava and grapefruit. Unexpected, but quite nice. I’m finding some hay notes as well. Taste is sweet with a touch of bittering hops. Medium bodied with a slick/creamy texture. Smooth finish. The flavors are a bit muted at first, but it opens up a little as it warms. Pretty nice, session beer.

Poured from a bottle into a Pint glass.

Look - clear, light golden color with about half a finger's worth of off-white foam that dissipates slowly.

Smell - very pungent fruity flavor (I want to say maybe grapefruit). Nothing much else.

Taste and Mouthfeel - similar fruity/grapefruity taste, so a little bitter but not quite from the hops. Texture is good, but leans a little more toward the watery side.

Overall - not a bad brew, but not terribly interesting or intriguing. Still worth a taste, and probably good on a hot day.

Pours a crystal clear honey straw color with a short white head that settled into a light ring.

The aroma is of a floral honey malt and a light citrusy hop. Overall a sweet fruity aroma.

The taste is of a bready malt with a peppery and slightly citrusy hop presence. The hops aren't very strong but go well with the light malt body. There also seems to be a general fruitiness to the malt.

The feel is light to moderate with prickly carbonation. Good balance between the malt and hops. Drinks very easy.

A nice light fruity ale. No big flavors or off grainy flavors to slow this beer down and it has great balance. Good for the style.

pours a clear yellow with about a finger of rapidly disappearing white head which leaves no lacing.

smell: citra hops. i love it, citrusy, grassy, and slight pine.

taste: this beer has only one flavor as the citra hops overpower any malt characteristics. since i love this hop variety, i love the way this beer tastes.

mouthfeel: smooth and oily goin down but becomes very resonous and sticky in the end. coats your mouth with a hoppy yummy film.

overall: very very similiar to the drifter. a refreshing light beer with alot of crispness.

On-tap 5/27/2011 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short white head that fades quickly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, citrus, light caramelized malts but there’s also a bit of an odd funk to it that I cannot place.

T: The taste starts with a sweet citrus flavor. Then a strong grassy hops bitterness comes in. the malt character is about where it should be for this type of beer which is a bit on the thin side but it doesn’t create much balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very mild kick, decent representation of style, it’s not a bad beer but there are several others in the style that I would pick first.

Pours a translucent pale golden color with a weak white head. No lacing

Mild sweet grapefruit and pale malty wheat on the nose

Flavor starts with a slight sweet and bitter citrus (grapefruit) and transitions to a semi dry wheat flavor with a tiny hint of malt and yeast

Mouthfeel is very light and smooth with mild carbonation followed by a flat wheat aftertaste

Overall I think it's a decent light and refreshing beer to session. In no part of this beer there anything bold or overwhelming. I think this would be a good beer to transition a boneheaded Bud drinker to into a craft beer drinker.

Appearence: This has a nice clear, golden color to it with a nice white quarter inch head to it.

Smell: Although not a real strong hop smell there are some light, fruity qualities to this beer. A little orange and citrus in the smell. Wish it had a higher does of Citra hops in it. My favorite hop!

Taste: This is one hell of a session beer. Great little hop bite and really well balanced. Nice fruity flavor to it that is damn good. Not much malt but not really bitter at all either. Great balance.

Mouthfeel: Nice amount of carbonation and delivers a true session beer.

Overall: I have never had a really good Widmer beer and this I have to say is one I will buy again! This is a great summer beer. Besides Abita Strawberry I really like this one as well to have quite a few and really not be heavy on the palate. These will go down real easy in the Arizona Heat.

Served in a glass.

A: White bubbly head dissipates slowly leaving a moderate amount of lacing. Light to medium carbonation present. Color is light gold.

S: Surprisingly can't really make out the malts. Smell consists almost entirely of fruit (but not limited to citrus). Slight floral/grass scent as well. Smell is also kind of sweet. Overall the smell is quite surprisingly pleasant/good.

T: Light malts. Not much bitterness. Citrus. Light-but-satisfying crisp and sweet taste. Not a ton of taste but it does taste pretty good as everything is smooth and blends together well.

M: Medium-bodied. Slightly syrupy. A bit of carbonation.

O: Pretty nice for a clean summer beer. Would make for a good spring beer too IMO. For a beer on lighter side, this is pretty darn good. Give it a try, it might surprise you.

Appearance: (3.5)
- Poured almost two bottles in a Widmer imperial pint glass. Nice finger and a half of white foam, pours a very clear light copper color. Foam settles to a nice ring and a floating thin layer on top. Light lace.

Smell: (4.0)
- Big citrus, spicy, and grassy aromas. Light sweetness, sugars, subtle grain. Light bread. Mostly hops dominate the smell of this one. Big grassy hops.

Taste: (3.5)
- Light citrus bite. Grassy touch, light malt sweetness. Zingy lemon, grassy herbs, light spice and floral quality. Quite refreshing and light. Not much malt, but a light clean sweetness is present.

Mouth Feel: (3.0)
- Light zesty touch makes the palate water. Not drying really, and rather light bodied. Well carbonated.

Overall: (3.5)
- Overall this is a great cold drinker for a hot day. It's very light on the malt side, and you can tell they really played with the hops to create this beers flavor. It's light, bubbly, and refreshing. A beer I am sure most anybody would enjoy, or be able to get started on for a path through craftbeerdom. Overall the beers looks are average.. not a huge amount of lace or cloudiness. A little too typical for my liking, but the hops certainly stand out among others. Worth a try.

Comes out of the tap a slightly hazy golden amber with an average white head. Strong, hoppy, fruity and slightly sweet aroma calls for a taste. Hoppy flavor borders on evergreen but surprisingly is not bitter, and has a nice fruity undertone and a hint of malt. Fizzy, lively texture is truly lip-smacking. Bottoms up for summer!
