On tap @ the Widmer Gasthaus (Portland, OR) on 9/4/11. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear gold, with a ½ finger of rich bright-white head. This retains with some foamy edges, leaving back sudsy froth that dots the sides of the glass. The aroma is floral and VERY green and leafy in spots. Spice and pine notes dot the middle of the nose, while bready grains give this a firm twang across the back of the nostrils.
The taste has a firm citric bitterness to it, which is set against the tight bready crispness of the malt. Hops mostly finish this with dry notes of bitter pith and spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied (maybe a little fuller feeling) and crisp up front before soothing out considerably along the back. I’m not picking up any active warmth from that 8%+ ABV but this just feels a little too big at times for what the flavors are trying to do here.
While I appreciated the crisp and clean feel from the Lager yeast here, I think that it may be exposed the hop profile a bit too much, as it had a raw and earthy character that got a bit unappealing after a while. That plus the too heavy feel me glad that I had only ordered a ½ pint of this one.

I recently had this at the Widmer Gausthaus as part of their Collaborator series. It pours a clear golden color with a great foam that last a lot longer then average lagers. It has the beautiful smell of an IPA, in which there is a lot of citrus, some pine, and a sweet bready smell from the lager yeast. It drinks exactly like an IPA with all of the same flavors: citrus, pine, and grapefruit. The lager lends a nice clean flavor that sometimes an ale yeast cannot. The yeast also boosts the breadiness of the malt, but overall it is a great lager; probably one of the best I have had. It combines all of the best of an IPA and the clean yeast of a lager. For the mouthfeel it was very crisp and clean, and a had great carbonation. Overall, this is one great beer. I am really impressed on how combining an extremely hoppy style with a crisp, clean, and light flavored style, and see how you can a great balance between the two. Definitely a great beer.
