On tap in a pint glass at Whole Foods Lane Ave on 4/10/13
Stained wood light brown and honey. Thin head and not much retention. There is a little lace.
The aroma is sticky pine, grapefruit, rye and sugar cookie. It smells good, if too sugary. The taste is loaded with hops, a slew of bitter citrus and pine. Bready, toasty middle. The problem is massive bitterness on the finish which drowns out the finer aspects of the rye. The bitterness trumps even the sugars. Medium-full body will full carbonation. Sticky hop resin finish.
Overall impression: Not a good rye and not a good IPA. It is, however, a good beer to pass by.

A: Reddish/orange amber, slightly hazy, off-white head that hangs around, short lacing.
S: White chocolate, caramel, yeast/dough, malty whoppers candy
T: The front tastes a lot like it smells, the a nice peppery and bitter lingering hops. A lot of malty and sourdough bread flavors.
M: Medium-bodied, decent CO2, a mouth-coating effect.
O: Not a bad brew but something isn't doing it for me here. I dislike very few foods - one of them being Swiss cheese. For some reason I have the same ambivalence towards this beer (awkward, I know). I've had 3 other Widmer Bros. brews and have thoroughly enjoyed if not loved all of them but unfortunately this is the first one I've officially reviewed. My expectations were high.
