First thing you are going to notice is the smell... and oh man, you're in for something unique. A cacophony of vibrant smells straight out of your herbs and spices cabinet. Cinnamon, basil, ginger, and oregano with lots of cayenne spice. Some grapefruit in the background. I'm all about great smelling beer, and I'm totally digging this. Unique, pleasant, fresh and tantalizing. Pour is nothing extraordinary; hazy amber, good lacing. If you like the smell, and are ok with some wackiness in your beer, I think you will dig this. Tons of herbs up front, lots of oregano and ginger. Nice hops and citrus with some black tea in the middle and some nice spice from the cayenne at the end. Surprisingly well balanced considering the ingredients and gamut of flavors. Super clean mouthfeel; dry, crisp and refreshing. I'm actually a big fan of this beer now and was pleasantly surprised. Check it out if you're looking for something off the beaten path.

Bottle served in pint glass.
A-pours a light yellow with a mild head and moderate cloudiness.
S-an herbal aroma, like tea. Light hoppy smell.
T-Taste like a west coast IPA, the tea and spices enhanced the hoppy taste.
M-7% ABV. But couldn't even tell easy drinking beer, medium body with nice amount of carbonation
O-Nice solid beer. Would have again.

Well, I bought this on a whim. Its strange, but worth trying. It says that is is brewed with black tea, but it is surprisingly light in color. It pours a slightly hazy golden amber and features a white head that dissapates quickly. The little foam that does linger leaves mediocre lacing. The aroma is dominated by spicy/slightly floral hop aroma and slight malt. There is a definite earthiness, Maybe from the addition of the tea? I get a bit of ginger too. It is overly carbonated, but the mouthfeel is still slightly creamy. Malt up front and I do believe that I detect the tea in the taste, but it quickly fades to a spicy/tannic bitter finnish that isn't as unpleasant as it is unexpected. The finish is long and dry

Not a big fan. Weak, watery, overly spiced and unbalanced. Maybe just too much spice to it or something. Too difficult to drink and try and unravel. Did not find this beer enjoyable.

Poured a nice orangish bronze color, small foamy head. Lots of spice and fruit aromas - seems a bit schizophrenic to my nose. Taste followed in kind - too much going on for me. Think there is some cardamom taste in there - not a big fan of that particular flavor. Mouth feel was pretty thin and my impression was lack of balance and trying to be everything at once. And I swear over all of that was Bazooka Joe bubble gum...

decent white head, pretty good cling/lace, dark straw hue and pretty clear, mild amounts of carbonation populate the suburbs of the beer, looks more like your average lager than an IPA but looks aren't everything....

spicy and floral, an almost herbal/medicinal thing going on, sort of like smelling natural toothpaste, definitely something minty lurking in there, the malt is also in the background and has sort of an old school bubble gum thing happening (like big league chew), interesting mix, can't tell if I like it but it is interesting...

taste etc...
the carbonation seems a bit low, the flavor is sort of like the nose, it has some strange medicinal minty thing going on, the hops and the bitterness are there but that strange aftertaste really dominates this brew, this is a bit hard to finish

strange, not my thing, the dominating flavor is reminiscent of dental products with a bitter finish, definitely different but just not for me.

A: Poured from the growler into a pint glass. Body is golden-orange with a small white head that leaves behind some lace.

S: Mild nose - some tea-like characteristics and some hops - but not very strong at all.

T: Interesting, as there's a lot going on, taste-wise. I get sweet malt up front, with some spices - I get cinnamon and nutmeg. Also citrusy hops that lead me to think of oranges and orange oil; finishes with lemony bitterness. Lingering taste, however, is of resiny pine and pine needle bitterness, leaving you with more of an IPA impression than you get at first blush.

M: Call it medium in heft, carbonation was appropriate, didn't add to or detract from the overall experience.

O: Good, but not great. The spiciness is a little odd in an IPA, but overall it worked, even if it meant the beer wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours cloudy orange with white foam on top. Strong lacing. Pine & citrus grapefruit nose. Light citrus and juicy flavor with a lurking hop backbone. Like a blonde IPA. Pretty good taste, but on the lighter side. Pretty good.

A- Deep golden body with a huge foamy creamy looking white head. Tons of carbonation bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass.

S- Piney and citrusy hops are in the nose along with spices and a sweet sugary tea aroma. Spices have almost a dried floral quality to them.

T- Taste is a combination of tea, a malty IPA and a cheap spiced rum. Really does not work well in any way.

M- High carbonation, slight sting on the tongue, but also leaves residue in the mouth.

O- May work for people looking for twisted tea, but I did not like this one at all and should not be associated with IPAs.

A: Poured into simple mug from keg. Immediate rush of frothy head that really quickly slows down and ends with a nice layer of head at the top. Looks inviting and the lacing is quite nice. A very amber-filled rustic color to the internal, and nice bubbles rising to the top in standard format.

S: Smells nice and spicy. Great flavor coming off the top of the glass and loving the alluring scent to the whole brew. Into it.

T: Pretty good. In between a 3.5 and 4.0 but I'll knock it up due to the spicyness of it which we don't see too often these days. I'd love if it was even more spicy. A bit of bitter hops and just a tiny pinch of fruit - maybe banana or citrus lingering.

M: Full body and solid but doesn't feel as good as I'd hoped in the mouth when hanging for a while. Feels great going down though - nice and smooth; not too thick and not too thin.

Overall: Good IPA but not my favorite. I like Widmer and will always realize their Hefe will probably be their selling point, but this is still a great release from a great brewery. Definitely glad I finally tried this IPA out.

Poured from a bottle into a dimple seidel mug.

A-Mahogany orange color with some cloudiness. Poured a 2-finger head that lasted for a minute. After the head dissipated there was a thin white ring around the edge of the glass; trace amounts of lacing. Light carbonation.

S-Banana, clove, sweet malt, dry hops, and spice. Great smell!

T-Similar to the smell: banana, sweet malt, bitter hops, and a lot spice. The aftertaste was quite dry and bitter. I loved the spice aftertaste. Great to have with spicy nachos. Warming effect from the alcohol.

M-Full-bodied, light carbonation, and dry.

Overall-Great brew. It's too bad it isn't available all the time.

Golden color with a white head. Interesting blend of citrus hops and spices. Heavy on the anise, pepper, ginger, and cinnamon. The other aromatics are there, but less so. Decent tea aroma. A hint of sweet malt in the background. The flavor has a nice hoppiness to it with mild to moderate bitterness. As with the nose, heavy anise, pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and tea. The finish is fairly bitter, which is likely augmented by some of the spices. Really interesting and different.

On Tap at Blue Dog

Widmer spiced IPA looks the part with a mix between light orange and yellow in the color with a nicely formed white cap up top with retention and minor stick. Smell is overrun with spice. The hops do show up in scent though with an earthy appeal. There is a whole lot of spice on the nose and I cant pinpoint what the exact additions are. Taste as expected is overrun with spice with an IPA backing. They kind of work together to bring something new to the table, although it's not something I want to drink a pint of, let alone a bottle to the dome. This might work well as a pairing with some lightly spicy food. The body is a step below medium with spritzy carb. I finished my glass, and did not need anymore. I believe this is my first widmer beer and while it did not knock my socks off, it also did not make me throw up, which is a win in my book.

Pours very hazy orange amber color with a 1 finger foamy white head that was full of bubbles and faded kind of fast and left minimal spotty lacing.

Smells very spicy up font, like clove, ginger, coriander, pepper, light cinnamon, allspice, potpourri, pine cones/piney hops, lemon zest, grains and herbs like mint and tea leaf; this beer smells like a spice rack was just knocked over, not like an IPA and I don’t care for it.

Tastes of spices and herbs, and like the nose includes ginger, coriander, pepper, clove, cinnamon, allspice, potpourri, pine cones/piney hops, lemon zest, floral hops or dry hop leafs, toasted grains, grass, herbs like mint and tea leaf, orange peel, yeast and cardboard; tastes like a broken tea bag full of spices was dropped in an IPA, and failed to impress me. Ginger lingers at the end with some spicy bitterness, but the bad taste does not fade.

Mouthfeel is smooth, with light carbonation, a medium body and an herbal spicy overload that just destroys your taste-buds. On the positive side, all the spices hide the ABV quite well.

I understand the concept of this beer, but I would never have it again – now let me go scrape my tongue.

I poured one and a half bottles into an imperila nonic with a clear light to medium golden with a great looking sticky one finger white head that never really settled ,a nice rocky mass is still there over five minutes after the pour.Mainly spice in the nose wich isn't bad but I would like some more hop presence going on in a northwest IPA.Alot of ginger on the palate with mild anise flavors, they seem to overtake the leafy/citric hops but it's not in you're face or off putting. It's not bad although I would like the hops to be bigger than the spiced flavors, still I would likely buy again.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a tight white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of some spice notes and hops.

Tastes of the spice notes upfront with a hoppy ending. Notes of cinnamon and nutmeg lead off blending into a little malty sweetness. Hops come in on the end and add grassy notes. Spice pretty much dominates everything.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, the spice dominates the beer and I don't like it that much.

Growler filled at the Green Growler in Croton-on Hudson, NY

Pours typical lighter almond amber, off white head, moderate fine lacing.

Spiced up nose with citrus, coriander, cloves and ginger.

Fruity, with more limes, ginger, cloves and tropical fruits on the palate.

Complex and flavorful IPA with alot more then typical spicing. Zesty and quite enjoyable, if you like your IPA on the aggressive side.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint.

A: Deep golden hue. Lots of effervescence clings to the sides of the glass. Pours a slight, bubbly, white head leaving a foam blanket on the surface after a brief appearance. Pretty distinct beer ring deteriorates into some nice spider web lacing.

S: Hoppy pine with floral tones, wild berry, lemon, and a little pepper.

T: Hops, lemon pepper, with a hint of acetone.

M: Standard IPA hoppiness in the front, with a peppery aftertaste that takes charge and almost overwhelms. Really sticks with you. Something of a synthetic fruity feel.

D: Light, but aftertaste dictates a slower pace.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Nice hue, with some pretty solid lacing. Nose is wild fruit, with hops and pepper. Flavor is a hoppy pine, harshly spiced with a lemon pepper aftertaste that sticks. Overall, this is a pretty good quaff.

Fluffy white head ends up in a thick layer on top of a chill haze. Yellow orange in color. Thick oily, earthy hop aroma. Slight citrus. Damn. Smells like a Gubna on a bit of a downer. Sweet malts and citrus are quickly overtaken by pungent, meaty hops. Body is lighter than expected, and evens things out making for a fairly drinkable, albeit very heavy hop oriented IPA. Unique in all aspects.

A - Body is the color of clover honey. Slightly coppery. A finger of very fine white head forms. Good retention. Some lacing.

S - Orange peel. Spicy and peppery hops. A touch of grapefruit and pine. I can also just barely detect a bit of fruity, earthy and tannic aroma--possibly from the tea.

T - Peppery and slightly caramely up front. Quickly followed by lots of hop bitterness and an astringent tannic flavor. While not extremely unpleasant, the tannins do give the impression of over-boiled tea leaves. I would prefer more of a mild, aromatic tea flavor than what this has. Finish is dominated by hops and flavors of bitter orange peel. Aftertaste of spiced tea.

M - Thin-to-medium body. Dry, clean finish that is slightly astringent. Leaves a lasting bitterness on the back of the tongue.

Overall - While they capture the tea essence quite well, I think they could have gone a touch easier on the hops and tried to cut back on the tannins. This is a very interesting AIPA, but not one I'd reach for on a regular basis.

An interesting beer, no doubt. 12oz bottle dated March 13th poured into a Big Red pint glass.

A: Pours a chill hazed orange with a fluffy off-white head and some decent lacing, carbonation visible.

S: Hops, herbs, citrus, and tea leaves are all prominent. A good mixture of both dimensions, though I'd prefer a little less tea presence since I am drinking an IPA and not an Arnold Palmer...faint hints of holiday spices and brown sugar on the nose as well.

T: Orange, tangerine, sun tea, faint nutmeg, herbal, lemon, raspberry leaf, chai, coriander, citrus, moderate bitterness.

MF: Lighter medium feel, a touch oily, with a light lingering dryness.

O: Decent IPA, and definitely unique. Solid if not spectacular.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Just under two fingers of head. Color was golden orange. Light white lacing on the top and sides that dissipated slowly in the middle and retained OK on the sides. Just a little bit of stuff left on the sides of the glass.

Smelled lots of different flavors, all pleasant. Got citrus hops - orange, tangerine, lemon, lime and even some raspberry. Also some sweet floral notes, like a rose flavor. Some candy flavors, too, like Sweet Tarts or Smarties. Pretty potent on the nose.

Tasted citrus hops up front, mainly tangerine, orange and lemon. But still got that raspberry/strawberry. Still got those Smarties taste and some sugary floral notes. Very bitter finish on the tongue after. After awhile, I got some spices. Seemed to be pepper or some kind of spicy taste. Tons of different flavors, very surprising.

Light-to-average body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long bitter finish. Spicy hot feeling on the throat after.

Not a bad beer overall. The smell may have been the best part and I almost pulled the trigger on a 4.5/9.0.

I had this Widmer offering in a nonic pint.

Appearance- Only a slight film is present on the top of the beer. The white foam doesn't even cover the top of the marigold-colored and hazy body.

Smell- The spice smells almost exactly like chai tea. I wish it was much stronger. It is more of a subtle smell than full forced. There is a little bit of grapefruit and sugar roiling too. Oh, and resin is present as well. I really wish this thing popped more.

Taste- The chai is not here as much, more lemon and a slight cinnamon-like flavor. The finish has some resin and is even a bit peppery. Again, the citrus flavors are a little more present, not so much grapefruit, still just hitting lemon mostly.

I would like the spice to be stronger.

Mouth feel- It is a little bubbly, and slightly astringent. The body is a light medium, and could be bigger. It is not that this beer is hard to drink, but not very easy either.

Overall- I think this beer is a good start. The chai flavors are great, but they are not nearly big enough. I don't know, maybe the ingredients and the process are expensive, so they did not make it as big as it could be.

Then again, maybe this is exactly how they wanted it and I am not the drinker they are trying to cater to. I like it well enough, but this one was certainly not a bullseye.

A - Pours a slightly cloudy golden-orange with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lace.

S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts with some biscuit malts, citrus hops, some coriander and other spices, with a hint of tea.

T - Starts off with sweet caramel malts with some coriander and other spices, and some citrus hops. Through the middle some light pine hops come through with a bit of bitterness and a bit of tea. The finish is a mix of sweet caramel and biscuit malts with some citrus hops, light bitterness, and some spices.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, bitter, and lightly spicy finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice IPA with a nice malt and hop balance and some nice complexity with the other flavors.
