Picked up a bottle of the 2012 edition of this beer today- bottle says "MAR 12 12" on it. Only had it in the fridge for a few hours before I opened it up, seemed like it was just about the perfect temperature, not too cold.

A: Pours very dark, with an inch of foam on top. About 1/8" of foam lasted throughout.

S: Aroma is strong with raspberry puree or jam

T: Notes of bittersweet chocolate and hops are in each sip. Strong, artificial tasting raspberry flavor is also impossible to miss

M: A mix of hoppy carbonation hits me and dries my mouth out a little

O: I had much higher hopes for this beer. I think I got it confused with another Widmer Bros beer I was looking for when I picked this up. Overall, this reminds me of one of those truffles that comes in the Whitman Samplers chocolates- dark chocolate w/ raspberry filling.

Pours from bomber to tulip an opaque flack, no light escapes, black edges, a smaller 1/2 finger khaki head, little retention but nice lacing. The nose is rather muted with roast being most prominent A backdrop of fruity sweetness is also present. The flavor starts of with the roasted malt and then immediately is dominated by the raspberry, not overpowering but not mellow. Sweet and strong with the warmth. Mold bitterness and the raspberry flavor lingers for a while. Full bodied and adequately carbonated, my favorite aspect of the beer is he mouthfeel. Creamy and smooth. Overall decent but I likely wouldn't go out of my way to find it.

A: black with a one finger dense light tan head
S: smells of roast malt and chocolate and a whisper of raspberry
T: tart raspberry flavor up front that fades to a solid backbone of roast malt, coffee, some chocolate flavors and some burnt sugar type flavor. whispers of raspberry immediately on the swallow with another dose of roast malt and coffee to slowly fade away.
M: medium bodied with fairly light carbonation, typical for the style
O: pretty decent with a nice twist on the style. well made and the raspberry flavor is not overpowering and complements the flavors of the beer instead of distracting and detracting from them. I don't know if I'd buy another bottle at 12 bucks but it isn't bad at all and it has enough malt presence to age well. I'm sure the flavors will meld together and transition smoother in the future.

From a bottle aged approximately 6 months.

Visually appealing with a good amount of lacing a jet black appearance. Faint amount of raspberry and roasted malt aroma, albeit a bit light for the style. Same goes for the flavor. Hints of raspberry and a mild burnt sugar finish. A bit on the dry side. Solid but not great. Medium heavy body and average carbonation.

a. Black with reddish huge. 1 finger foamy brown head

s. Malt and sweet raspberry. Alcohol sent is strong.

t. Alcohol is hidden well for 9.3 - surprisingly based on the smell. Do not get hit with the raspberry, more of a mild - easy drinking traditional stout.

m - OK. carbonation seems high for a stout - nothing to wright home about.

o. This is a nice stout - tasty, but not the taste I would have expected - not getting the raspberry. Smooth and easy.

Appearance - It looked black enough to be a Russian Imperial Stout. Let's allow the comparison to end there.

Smell - This Russian Imperial Stout smelled like a raspberry candle or air freshener. The smell certainly did not make me want to drink the beer.

Taste - At the front, I detected burnt chocolate malt. The raspberry notes very faint and seemed very artificial. It tasted more like raspberry flavoring than raspberries. If there was an intention to make an imperial stout with a sweet fruitiness, this beer has a serious lack of sweetness.

Mouthfeel - There was a degree of thickness, but I would certainly not qualify it as motor oil thickness.

Overall - I told my brother not to buy this one. He did not listen. Now you can listen to me: You need not buy this one.

You will never have another beer like this ever. Never has any beer, of any style, been so smooth and drinkable, let a lone this is a f###ing Russian imperial stout. It flows in your mouth and throat like water, and drinks like a soda. Yet it has such a unique and rich taste, you will never be able to drink enough in one sitting. The raspberry is not by any means overpowering, but in perfect proportion to the rest of the flavors. Easily the best Widmer Bros. I've ever had.
