22oz Bomber split 2 ways

A: Good and dark, Tannish head, with good lacing to the bottom

S: Raspberries initially, with chocolate

T: Raspberry up front, tart, turning malty sweet with chocoalte, returning to raspberry for a long tart finish.

M: Medium bodied, zippy on the sides of the licker. Nicely carbonated.

O: Very nice. I suppose some age would mute the zippiness and add more caramel or raisin, but a pleasantly enjoyable beer right now. A touch more body would benefit it right now as well.

A: Pours a very dark reddish brown with a fair amount of dark tan head. The head dissipates to a ring around the edge of the glass with spotty film on the surface.

S: Sweet heavy raspberry with a thick malt base.

T: Strong and sweet, with the raspberry note present but not quite as prominent as the smell suggests. The finish is slightly bitter and the raspberry also comes through a bit more.

M: Full body, medium carbonation.

Overall, good, but not outstanding. The raspberry does add and interesting touch, but it's otherwise an unremarkable imperial stout.

Clear brown colored ale with a tall brown colored head.

Smells of raspberry and chocolate with some bitter coffee aroma. Coffee candy malt scent with a little razzles candy to it.

Starts out sweet with a distinct raspberry taste. Chocolate and bitterness appear after the initial taste. Warming in the chest can't really taste the alcohol though. And that is about it, raspberry, chocolate and coffee.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty beer on the sweet side of stout. Really more of a porter, it is worth a try.

22oz bottle poured several times into a FW mini snifter

A - Dark brown with a 1 finger tan head.

S - Raspberries and dark bitter chocolate. A little hint of coffee.

T - Tart raspberries and those chocolate malts with the coffee and hop bitterness taking you home. Can't find the alcohol.

M - Medium full body. Oily coating. Carbo is off slightly.

O - Nothing to write home about but it could be worse. I don't mind the raspberries. It makes for something different but I could see others not digging it.

22oz bottle from Greene's (Atlanta, GA). 10.99. Bottled 3/12/12. Served in a Wild Heaven snifter.

Pours very dark brown with two and a half fingers tan head that leaves a good many pockets of lace.

Raspberries shine through in the nose with other smells of dark chocolate and rum raisins

Tastes of dark chocolate covered raspberries, coffee, roast malts and dark fruit.

Creamy medium full feel with mild carbonation. Long bittersweet cocoa raspberry finish.

This is what is says- a Russian imperial stout with a bunch if sweet tart raspberry character. Very enjoyable.

Quite appealing appearance in the tapered Bushmills glass. Dark brown brew with a white foam that lasts well. Spritzy on the tongue.

The raspberry flavor starts right out but is soon overtaken by a bitter coffee flavor. The barest hint of sweetness. The fruit just drops out of sight, but a little berry remains in the nose. Is there chocolate in this, or just the rather charred malt? A plasticky taste from somewhere. Woody and a little puckery. From the very dry aftertaste I would say that they use a Belgian yeast for some reason, but maybe it's just all the seeds and stems. Quite a bitter ending. Very austere.

One of the less-successful brews from Widmer, in my opinion. Unfortunately it has to compare in my mind with the sensational raspberry RIS at the Wedge in Asheville. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Baron's Marketplace in San Diego.
