I love coffee as well as beer

so I grind my own beans and that smell when good fresh beans are just ground, that is the aroma that meets you when you crack open the bottle.

Pours a pitch black pint with a very healthy cream coloured head that keeps rather well.

The coffee scents remain and are the predominant flavour alongside buttery burnt toast.

Not the world's best mouthfeel especially for a stout but reasonable.

Drinkable and well carbonated its worth a look.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013, so it's just out of date. Picked up a while ago from a supermarket. The label describes it as a classic stout with a chocolate aroma.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A very dark ruby-brown colour that appears virtually black in the glass. Forms a large head of creamy beige foam with decent retention; this slowly reduces to a surface layer. Great lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of chocolate, mild coffee, faint burnt grain, subtle molasses, a twinge of dried fruit and earthy yeast. Restrained but balanced - nice.

Tastes of roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of dark malt, burnt grain, coffee, chocolate, mild molasses, a hint of dried fruit, stewed leaves and earthy yeast. Well-attenuated, followed by a distinct bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation but a rather insubstantial body for the style. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, coffee and stewed leaves.

Pretty good - a tasty stout. Looks the part, while the aroma and flavour reflect a hefty addition of dark malt. Notes of roasted grain and chocolate abound. Body is a tad watery, but otherwise this brew punches above its weight. Goes down nicely; worth sampling when you have the chance.

Printed "Brains Original Stout" on the beer label; coming in a 500ml brown bottle, BB 30/11/2013, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: pitch black in colour, coming with mild carbonation and a very restrained layer of light khaki beer head.
S: mildly stinky-roasty aroma comes with a treacle-ish sweet edge, on a thick bedrock of gristy black malts laced with touches of calcium pills and chocolate syrup.
T: a smooth swallow of roasty-coffee-ish malts is ensued by lots of hops on the balance with a substantial bitter profile, yielding just a faint aroma but explicit herbal notes & spiciness are still there to be enjoyed. The lingering undertone reminds me of black sugar, a fair bit of black stone-fruits as well as burned nuts. Overall, the balance between a decent acidity & bitterness is truly un-missable.
M&O: softly-carbonated, medium-bodied, lubricating yet generally light on the palate; this is a quaffable stout with all the good quality to offer without being too rich or heavy. Nice.

500ml Bottle, best before 30 June 2012, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard some four months before that date.

The beer didn't want to give me a head, so mid pour I gave it a more rigorous angle, low and behold a tan coloured head rose through the body, sadly it soon fell to a wisp and collar.

The body is really dark, almost black in fact.

The smells were of lightly burnt chocolate malts and ground coffee, actually so was the taste. The burnt chocolate content gave the beer a dry finish and added to any hop bitterness that might have shown.

Nothing too set this apart from other Stouts, medium body depth, becoming a little watery towards the end of each sip. Might be a whole lot better in cask form.
