Colonel Paris Pale Ale is our take on an Englsh Style medium bodied offering. We use strong hop bitters combined with low malt to bring you a brew with 'sweet character'. To round out the smooth process we combine a secret blend of English and American Hops.

Pours copper gold with a thin lid of head. No retention and very little lacing.

Faint, bright, hoppy nose. Picking up grapefruit more than anything.

Very sweet, bright hit. Citrus, mainly grapefruit again, dominate. Nice twang in the finish.

Feel is very good for the style, maybe a tad thin.

Excellent session drinker. Definitely an all-weather beer.

Very hoppy pale ale; more like an IPA.

Typical Amer. PA appearance, but with less head and carbonation than usual.

S - citrusy hops

T - hop dominated. Nice, long-lasting finish. Crisp.

Worth seeking. Very drinkable but hoppy version of this style.

On tap at the brewpub in a shaker pint.

A light golden amber body is capped with a finger or so's worth of off-white foam. Retention is pretty good, and several rings of sticky lacing are left behind. The bouquet is mild, but pleasant, mainly light floral hops and honeyish malt. Tastes pretty much the same, with just enough sweet citrus to lend a touch of juiciness to the mouthfeel. A little bitterness sneaks in at the swallow. Some toasted grains and light grassiness in the aftertaste. Lowish carbonation.

Overall impression: Okayish, but not something I'd recommend with the tasty ESB available as one of the "Big 4" fulltime brews at BLue Ridge.

Served from tap into a standard pint. Pours a nice amber color with a minimal white head. There was no apparent lacing. The aroma consisted only of malt. The flavor of this beer was not as good as I had expected as it only really consisted of a weak malt with a little bit of spiciness to it. It was light on the palate with low carbonation. Overall this one was kind of bland in flavor. It does make up for this in drinkability and is quite drinkable, just not enough for me to order another.

On tap at the Blue Ridge Brewing Company, Greenville, SC, 12/26/2008.

Appearance: An orange amber, transparent bodied beer with fast and plentiful carbonation. One-finger of almost-white head has average retention and leaves a nice sheen of lace after it fades. Lacing around the edges is sticky, sheetlike, bubbly, and - on the whole - very nice.

Aroma: A fair dosage of herbal, leafy hops and hints of dry malt are well-balanced with one another but are way too faint.

Taste: Very Cascadey. A moderately strong bitterness, this one tastes like a baby Sierra Nevada almost, with leafy, faintly citrusy hops backed up by a relatively dry, cracker-like, roasty malt backbone.

Mouthfeel: Pillowy, smooth, well carbonated, very even and crisp but still smooth and soft.

Drinkability: An enjoyable and sessionable beer, low in abv% (though I don't remember specifics, I want to say it was around 5%), and though Cascade-hopped beers aren't my favorites, this one did a pretty good job of balancing them amongst themselves and with the malt foundation.

Another fine session offering from Blue Ridge. This light pale ale has been consumed numerous times as well. Tonight served in a pint glass. Consumed on 12/12/2008.

The pour is decent, light amber with a good clarity to it. Nice head of white rises up and settles down after a few moments into a thin crown but does leave behind some nice side lacing and the overall carbonation looked excellent.

The aroma is light, nice grain and light hop mix. Like fresh grass with a small touch of biscuit like malts. The flavor carries on much of the same here. Light hops, smooth, subtle bready malts and a crisp, clean flavor. Smooth, well carbonated, and very sessionable.

Overall a very light pale ale, but not really bad at all. I could handle drinking this one any time.

Appearance: Hazy, medium brown body with a small, fizzy white head. Fine layers of lacing as the beer goes down.

Smell: Toasted, biscuity maltiness in the aroma with just a bit of citrus.

Taste: Flavor of toasted biscuits with a very subtle sweetness. Notes of citrus. Medium earthy bitterness. Dry, toasty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Though light, it still makes for a fine APA.

The beer arrived chunky and cloudy and in a dirty glass. That was sent back and the beer returned lightly hazy with a low white head and it was a medium copper color.

The aroma was lightly fruity with a slight bit of citrus, notably grapefruit, but at a fairly low level.

The flavor was light with a zesty citrus hop presence. The hop character was more orange at first and then became more like grapefruit in the end. Overall the flavor was quite bitter and definitely dry.

The finish was dry with a slightly husky and grainy character which lasted into the aftertaste. The body was medium with a low carbonation. An ok pale ale but fairly boring.

Appearance: Medium amber body with a small head but good lacing

Smell: A little weak, but a distinctly floral nose

Taste: Crisp, with a bit of sweet malt; a nice level of bitterness bit on the metallic side (lacked the citrus fruitiness I look for in a beer brewed with Cascade hops)

Mouthfeel: Light/medium bodied with a nice level of carbonation

Drinkability: Refreshing - a decent beer

The Colonel is perhaps, IMHO, the best offering at BRBC. I look forward to this everytime I visit.

A lovely golden copper color, rich creamy head with plenty of lace, with a fantastic hop nose, balanced bitterness and flavor. I aspire to be able to brew a beer like this myself. I love hops, and this is a good one. It pairs well with the game offerings of Blue Ridge's varied menu.

Seek this one out. Especially when fresh fresh fresh.
