Thanks to Ffejherb for sharing a growler of this holiday treat.

A-Deep, dark, brownish black with a subtle, deep chestnut highlights. A thin tan head reduces to a thin cap and leaves spotty lace.

S-Earthy hops, dark chocolate, a touch of oak and freshly ground espresso beans.

T-Earthy, bitter dark cocoa up front with an impressive hop pop. Quite reminiscent of FFF Alpha Klaus. A deep, rich, roasty hoppy porter. This is certainly not a bad thing at all!

M-Medium bodied a just a touch on the thin side of things. Good lingering bitterness and chocolate goodness.

D-A nice surprise! A pleasant, full flavoured brew with plenty of roast and hop bitterness to make this an interesting brew.

Managed to swing down the other night and grab a pint before heading back home. I had sent out a couple of growlers of this but never got to try it this year. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 02/12/2010.

The pour was dark, black as night save for a few light touches of garnet around the edges. Big tan head head creeps up the sides of the glass and lays on top for what seems to be forever before fading back and leaving only the slighest lacing on the sides. Aroma is dark, malty with lots of roasted notes, chocolate, a touch of cinnamon and a rich campfire like tones that seems to be cut with brown sugar and almost licorice at times. Rich, creamy feel, very big body here as it thoroughly coats the palate and brings about a lovely warmth. Smooth, sweet and full of rich smoked qualities it seemed each sip was getting better then the one before. Loads of caramel, chocolate, deep dark fruits and the campfire smoke. Really just a very, very well done porter.

Blue Ridge is really getting their stuff together and it is starting to show. Cannot wait to see what else is going to be coming down the pike.

Growler via mikesgroove on 1/7/10, shared with friends.

A - Poured an extremely dark, oily black onyx body with just a hint of deep burgundy around the bottom edges and half a finger of dense, sponge-like bubbly tan head that settled to a patchy swirl and yielded thin strands of lace.

S - Earthy and nutty aroma with a slight smokey character. Muted chocolate and coffee notes are also present. Hops really opened up as the liquid reached room temperature.

T - Quite a complex flavor overall, with chocolate, smoke, tobacco and abundant earthy hops in the background, the latter of which impart a leafy, gritty bitter character. Finish is bitter with some chocolate sweetness.

M - Medium bodied with a slick texture, albeit a bit thin and watery in the long run. Clingy hop bitterness on the tongue. Pretty dry finish with lots of stickiness and very faint astringency.

D - Santa's Little Helper is a complex porter with a very pronounced hop character, especially for the style. Everyone at the table really enjoyed this. Good stuff!

Note- I was told this is a different beer than the old "Santa's Helper Porter" already listed on BA. Interestingly, this porter includes some wheat along with the barley. On tap at the brewpub in a shaker pint.

Pours out dark and intimidating with a finger's worth of tan head. This soon reduces to a thin skim, but leaves a nice network of spiderweb lacing.

Smells like a porter should smell- rich roasted malts, a bit of chocolate, warm and inviting. The wheat comes into play mid-swallow, a lemony snap that teams up nicely with the sharp burnt malt flavors. A small amount of chocolate sweetness and a subtle hoppiness round out the flavors. I'm liking the robust flavors of this a lot.

Body is thick, yet slippery, with lowish carbonation. Finishes nice and dry with lingering black malts and one last nip of snappy wheat.

Overall impression: Nice offering from Blue Ridge. The wheat definitely added a little something extra.
