The port side brings a good sour taste. Red grapes, hint of oak and Brown sugar

2013 edition.

Dark and murky with a deep reddish mahogany color. Exciting crest of rising head. Amounted to an inch and a half, at first, then subsided to a small cap with a lace-down lip.

Belgian dark ale phenols, musty malts with a Scottish bent, vinous notes, soft oakiness, red grape, prune, and some Band-Aid offness.

Oh, the port barrel is pronounced now. Chianti, raisin, savory barley, grape skin tannins, oak barrel, faint red apple, tartness with hints of Brett, medicinal/clove notes, and lingering mintiness in the finish. That combo reads funny, but is a good collective of flavors.

Has that tannic dryness and light tartness, but still flexing a wooly body. Carbonation is just a bit on the coarse side. Brushy, maybe.

Great Scotch Ale with that flair of port wine barrel aging. First port barrel-aged beer in my brew-scography. Not as good as the Bordeaux, but excellent, nonetheless.

Poured into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a medium to dark reddish coppery amber with a fine two finger tan head with great retention and thick, pillowy lacing. Aroma of butterscotch, caramel malt, mildly oxidized fortified wine and a slight minerally element. Flavor is mild caramel malt and wood, thinning out to a more vinous, fruitier taste with hints of caramel, dark fruit and oak. Finishes with the vinous notes and a slight tartness overwhelming the caramel, which returns in a lingering mild toffee and light hop finish. Medium bodied. An interesting, but odd barrelling of Scotch de Silly. The vinous, slightly tart fruitiness of the port did seems a awkward fit with the sweet maltiness of a Scotch ale. This is surprising, because I really enjoyed the previous Bordeaux aging of this ale and usually prefer the Port style treatments over wine. Somehow the previous wine barrelling enhanced the Scotch flavors and this leans more towards a tart Port with hints of caramel malt in the background. It is still enjoyable and I finished it more quickly than I expected (the ABV is well hidden), but I really like Scotch ale flavors and they were too subdued in this treatment. Glad I got to the try this treatment, but hope for a more complimentary barrelling next time. Dare I hope for whiskey next time?
