Aroma of caramel, vanilla and raisins, all very week. No hint of barrel.

Pleasant grapey aftertaste but it doesn't feel like much. Unique but in a weird way

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a J. Wakefield Brewing OG teku glass.
A: Rich deep brown, mildly translucent. The thin tan head fades quickly, and low visible carbonation after the initial small bubble rush during the pour.
S: Sticky caramel, toasted toffee, light whiskey (though I suppose it's actually bourbon) and a punch of vanilla from the oak. Some alcohol-soaked raisins and dark fruit as well, but not as much as some offerings of this style.
T: Toffee, caramel, raisins and dates. Bourbon/whiskey and lighter oak than the nose suggested. Vanilla and more caramel. Then it all fades into a sticky sweetness with residual fruits and ethanol heat. Decent flavors, but nothing really stands out.
M: Not so good here – the body is very thin, even watery. The low carbonation doesn’t help this effect at all. The alcohol presence is fairly restrained for the style, but there’s still some heat lurking underneath.
O: The mouthfeel is the killer here. The flavors aren’t terrible, although there are lots of better barrel-aged scotch ales. Definitely not great. Not really even good. But it stops short of being undrinkable…though I’m not sure I’m going to finish the bottle.
Further thoughts: This is getting worse as it warms up. The flavors don’t open up, and the watery character is more accentuated. It still stops short of being offensive, but I ended up dumping it out unfortunately.

Poured into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a hazy, murky walnut brown with a fine half finger light brown head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma similar to the the other barreled Silly Scotch ales, with caramel malt, apple and pear juice, Belgian yeast and light clove, little bourbon character. Flavor is caramel and bready malt, plums, dates, raisins, Belgian yeast, clove, mild whiskey. Finishes with nice fruit, light oak; spicy with clove and cinnamon (for some reason). Medium bodied with light creaminess. This has more Belgian dark ale character than Scotch ale to my taste, although the malt seems appropriate; no peat detectable. There is just barely a hint of bourbon, although the fruit flavor combination is reminiscent of whiskey. Surprisingly similar to the other barreled examples, the barrel effect here could have been from almost anything, even distilled wines since it is so fruity. This is a year old and perhaps has lost a little of its distinctive barrel influence and mellowed a bit. Still very flavorful and balanced and pleasure to drink. I look forward to the next iteration of this next year.

I'm sorry but a sour, bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale just doesn't make sense. Not horrible but the combination just doesn't work in my opinion. Not a fan.

Poured into a tulip it has a thick slight beige persistant foam head of a half inch with and brown body. Smell is candi sugar, stone fruit, belgian yeast esters, spice, caramel, slight vanilla, apple, and light bread-y malt. Taste is bourbon-y caramel apple, spice, slight vanilla, bread-y malt, and plum. Mouth feel is full and creamy as well as body and a moderate carbonation. A great beer all around, very cool mix of styles.
