330 ml bottle (11.2 oz), no freshness dating anywhere on the bottle. purchased at Whole Foods in Pasadena for about $3.

Appearance: Poured into a Duvel glass. Murky brown fluid topped with a tan head. The head shows very good retention and decent lacing. The lacing is nice but only about half of it really sticks to the glass. Swirling brings back a very smooth and fine head that makes the beer look very nice.

Smell: This beer has a very strong aroma that I get a whiff of without even holding the glass to my nose. The stronget scent is the maltiness that I can smell across the table. The aroma is sweet and malty with a vinous character. The aroma is also slightly roasty.

Taste: The flavor on this beer is long. A big sweet maltiness up front with raisins, brown sugar, toffee, and tart plums with candy sugar. More light roastiness on par with the nose. But this beer takes an unfortunate turn. If the flavors had ended with the above decriptors it would be great, but a metallic flavor rises near the middle to end. Mixed in with the odd and nasty metallic flavor is actually a pleasant smokiness that rides to the end. The aftertaste is very malty and sticky.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied but it doesn't overwhelm or weigh down my palate. Despite the metallic flavor this beer has a pleasant feel on the palate. It's sticky but not syrupy. Lightly carbonated and has the right feel for the style.

Drinkability: If not for the metallic flavor this would be an even more drinkable beer. It's not bad by any means but it does have that nasty flavor that squeeks in for a second. If I look past the metallic flavor I think this beer's strengths lie in the great maltiness that develops into complex fruit flavors and maintains a nice roasty flavor from the malting process. Well done but it could use some work too.

Great story on the creation of this brewery - WWI Scottish soldiers asked a Belgium brew master to brew some Scottish ale and the rest is history .

Served from a .75 liter bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Beautiful clear reddish brown with lots of heady froth that dissipates rapidly in to full top and side lacing. .

S - Dark fruit, yeast, mineral and sweet malt

T - Excellent! no hoppy bitterness, just malt and dark fruit, yeast. Finishes with balanced medium sweet and bitterness.

M - So smooth and mellow. No alcohol bite. Low carbonation.

O - One of my new regular's - bought on a whim but happy I did. Will buy again. Noted that there was what seemed to be dried yeast on the bottom of the inside of the bottle after I poured the last drop but no strange taste or smell. If anyone has experienced this aspect with other beers I would be happy to hear it.

Scotch Silly has a thin, fizzy, off-white head, and a milk-chocolate brown appearance, with rather large tan chunks suspended throughout. The aroma is of sweet, rich, pungent, brandywine, and dark bread. The flavor is equally rich, with even a strange or interesting citrus aspect in the back-taste. Bitterness is low, and sweetness is high. Mouthfeel is between medium and heavy, and Scotch Silly finishes not so dry and delicious. Booziness is not an issue with this beer. Just a great, great beer!

Appearance: clear red / brown with a medium sized off-white head that marks the glass nicely.

Aroma: malty, bready, some coffee-like notes but very subtle. A lot of caramel, and I think I smell a small sour note, typical for some belgian ales. Also it has a delicate touch of dust, and maybe some roastiness, but again - they're very subtle.

Taste: very sweet. Toffee, caramel, a bit roastiness and a little bit fruity. A small, almost untraceable alcohol note in the background. Mild alcohol bitterness.

Moutfeel: full bodied, soft carbonation.

Overall: a very enjoyable beer, although it's not my favourite style.
