The beer arrived on the table clear medium amber with a white frothy head which lasted very well to lace the glass.

The aroma was slightly fruity with some slight farmhouse character and earthiness from hops and yeast. The earthiness and farmhouse characteristics increased as the beer warmed.

The flavor contained some of the same hop and yeast earthiness with a quite decent level of bittering, but only to a moderate level. Their was also some spiciness present form the yeast.

The finish was dry with lasting pleasant earthy bittering long into the aftertaste. The body was medium with a very creamy carbonation. Everytime I have tried a bottle of this beer it has really been awful and riddled with diacetyl. This was a great change of pace!

Pint at Summits in Cumming, GA. Kinda odd seeing a Saison served in a Redhook glass.

It's silly season here (winter in our nations capital is a silly time indeed) so I thought what better way to celebrate than to give Silly Saison a go, from the eponymous named Brasserie de Silly... does that sound silly enough for you? Right, well then let's proceed.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: First off - not your average Saison with a slight opaque brown body and a light dusting of tan head. All the Saisons I've tried have been of the cloudy straw coloured variety so I'm not sure what's going on here.

S: Aroma is a real oddity as well with heavy notes of brown sugar, macerated fig and raisin. It's the brown sugar that stands out and this suggests that a truckload of sugar awaits. Not much else otherwise, no yeast, no hops, no barnyard or apple aromas typical in a Saison.

T: Then the flavour pitches another curve ball; yes the brown sugar and raisin is upfront on the palate, but then there is a slight lingering coconut flavour (which I've encountered several times before in beers I believed to be skunked). The back end finishes with mild herbal hop bitters however it is more dry than bitter. Further sips in and the raisin flavour becomes more dominant. Overall here the sweetness is much better managed than expected.

M: Mid to light bodied with a balanced carbonation.

D: What a weird name for a beer that is evidently NOT a Saison, they should have instead named it "Silly Raisin" as that would have been much more apt. Hey if you like beers that taste like a packet of raisins then this is your brew. Personally I'm not a fan of raisins and I was disappointed to find this ale nothing like any other Saison I've ever tried, but I can see why others might dig this.

Food match: Can't get Christmas pudding out of my head now - I hate Christmas pudding!

An excellent, easy drinking saison, that is different from many modern versions of the style.

aroma: malt, chocolate and light fruit

taste: brown sugar fruit with sherry and chocolate/malt notes. Easy to drink, refreshing and sweet.

This beer shows why the saison style is such a great style - it's diversity. I can easily imagine farm workers being thoroughly refreshed drinking this beer after a hard days work.

Poured a cloudy reddish amber with a half-finger off-white head. It looks too light for a Oud Bruin or a Flanders Red and too dark for a saison, but its not unappealing. Scents of sour funk, apple, white grape and some earthy must. A sour, wild ale aroma, not a saison at all, but not bad. Flavor starts with sour grape skin, some sour green apple and sour raspberry. In the middle and finish these flavors stick around and some lactic sour flavors also appear alongside funky musk. The finish and aftertaste are bitter with a bit of graininess. Again, not traditional for a saison at all, but not a bad wild ale flavor. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate carbonation and a drying feel. A good Belgian sour mouthfeel. Overall this is a good Belgian wild ale, with a nice all around profile, however it is not a saison like it claims to be.

Ambre-brown colour with a small head.

Strong caramel smell and taste, toffee, even some coke and herbal medicines. It drinks like a soda anyway.

For a saison it's not exaggeratedly sweet. Not being my favourite type of beer, this one drinks well.

Mouthfill is rather smooth.

Tasted 31 October 2013.

Pours medium brown, about the color of apple cider. Huge 3-finger yellow-tan head. Good retention, plenty of lacing. Nice, though I find the color unusual.

Smells like apple juice. A little funky. More like apple cider. Fruity and earthy.

Taste is moderately funky, a little herbal. It's got that apple juice, but the funk, herbs, and earthy grains are more potent. Nice complexity.

Feel is medium-light in body, moderate carbonation. Not particularly notable.

A fruity, lightly funky saison. Reminds me of apple juice crossed with beer. Not sure that I'd peg this as a saison without the label on the bottle, but it's tasty.
