Notes/Commercial Description:
Silly Sour is a unique brew that blends 13% of traditional dark Saison with 87% of soured ale. The delicate malt notes from the Saison manage to break through the striking green apple sourness upfront and than give a way to a finishing jolt of lactic sourness! At an approachable 5.5% Alc. by Vol. this chestnut colored brew adds a new page in the history of Saison brewing.

This is a saison? Really? Seems totally Flemish to me.

Pours dark and clear. Minimal head. Mild sour tones on top of a fairly heavy cherry character. Mild vinegar edges. Totally Flemish style. And I like it. Kind of an easy going funky beer. Probably would be a good beginner's sour.

330 ml bottle into Belgian snifter; no bottle dating.

Pours a deep ruby-brown color with a thin light brown head that quickly settles to a durable partial coat.

Aroma: sour fruits including cherry and green apple; hints of wet wood, wet hay, and wet leather. Better aroma than this sounds, with good complexity.

Flavor: sour fruit, including cherries, grapes and green apples. Moderately sour. ,Finishes with lingering notes of tart fruits, red wine, and raisins.

Feel: Medium body and near medium carbonation; fairly smooth.

Overall: a refreshing and unchalleging sour red ale with good complexity.

On tap at Stumbling Monk, Seattle, WA. Served in mini-goblet for $6.00!

Smells like freshly brewed beer, maybe a little green.
Red to light brown in color.
Very tart and lightly fruity start, an apple cider vinegar sour starts just behind the tip of the tongue, then lingers and tingles towards the middle and roof of the mouth. It finally finishes (after what seems like minutes) with a spicy pepper bitterness. Makes it an easy drinker... you are reaching for the glass as soon as you put it down.

This pours with a hue reminiscent of a Flanders with a clean mahogany and the coursing of bubbles through its body. The head was thin yet stayed creamy as it collared.

The aroma is subdued with light balsamic character. A bit malty with some grain, maybe barley, the aroma is pleasant but not complex.

The sour is less sour in many of the same styles but the feel is full and clean. I taste a vinegar, wine, cola nut, grain and almost toasty quality.

The feel is dry, thin yet full, strangely enough, with a real ease.

This is a well conceived sour that maybe hasn't found its full maturity. Either way it's recommended for a try.

11.2 ounce bottle. Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours a dark reddish/brown color with an inch and a half light tan head. Head retention is good, and there's a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like dark fruit (cherries, raisins), vinegar, tart apples, caramel, and some earthiness. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some red grapes, and bready malt noticeable too. Nice mix of sweet and tart flavors. I wouldn't call this sour, but there's enough tartness to make it interesting. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit syrupy with low/moderate carbonation. I liked this, worth a try if you've never had it before. $3.99 a bottle.

Brasserie de Silly's Silly Sour. 5.5% ABV.

A: Red/Deep Orange. Hazy grey-yellow in the dimple. Very noticeable sheeting, and just the tiniest bit of lacing, but it does hold.

S: More of a barnyard aroma. Tartness is kind of a hybrid of citrus, melon, and stone fruit. Hay, earthy.

T/MF: Now that is interesting. It's got quite a bit of tree sap-like caramels, with a sour edge and just a touch of dried grass bitterness. Apple core/stem. Earthy, grassy, barnyard. A bitter-ish raisin pulp flavor. Quite different from other sours I've had. The tartness is more in the vein of green apple peels. Flavors create a deceptive sucrosity-like effect. It comes across as sweet in flavor, but in actuality seems to be quite dry. Raisin-y along the roof of the mouth. Very nicely complex.

Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
