McFarlands Irish Red is a deep red lager brewed with copious amounts of caramel malt and just a touch of chocolate malt for color. Brewed in winter and left to lager until spring, this seasonal comes and goes rather quickly, making an appearance in draft only.

Poured form the 330mL bottle into a branded tulip.

A: The beer is a deep clear orange with some red tints. One finger offwhite head with low retention.

S: Very little here. Some bread flavor.

T: Some light fruit on the intro, with a nice balanced bready flavor and hints of caramel. Some light spice as well.

Overall: Very average. Not quite worth it. This is everywhere in Greece, and serves as a different sort of option from the other omnipresent pale lagers, but really it's not all that interesting.

June 2017: 330 ml bottle, bought in Rhodos, Greece. ABV is 5.6%. Amber colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, brown bread and grain. The flavour is malty with notes of caramel and brown bread, but is not too sweet. Minimal hops, dull finish.

33 cl bottle with a BB date of 4-2016. Purchased and consumed in Greece.
Looks very good: red-amber body with a durable, bone-colored head.
Attractive, mostly malty aroma with a disappointing flavor that is just bready and mildly bitter,

Had on tap. Ironically it is more copper brown than red, tons of lacing make up from a thin head. Smells of watered down toasted and bready malts. Toasty malts, roasted nuts, kisses of cocoa, and general macro malts make up a lackluster taste that you just feel is trying to break out but doesn't reach that definition. Feel is watery, thin, and brief, just doesn't stick around enough or drink easily enough to really enjoy that much, pass on this one

Tasted from 33 cl bottle bought in Greece. The label stated it was brewed in Greece.

A - Color is dark copper to light red and very clear. The head is off-white and weak. It quickly disappeared to nothing.

S - Aroma leans heavily toward malt rather than hops. There is bready, sweet malt, but also a strong cardboard smell that is distracting. Some unidentifiable earthy hops in the background, but enough to add some interest along with the malt.

T - Nice balance of malt and hops flavors, but tilts more to the malt. The malt is a bit bready and sweet and the hops are slightly fruity and earthy. There is a faint astringent or metallic taste at the back of my tongue that is not pleasant, but it is at a low level.

M - Some moderate, sharp hops bitterness that may be made more harsh by hard brewing water. Carbonation is low. Body is thin to medium.

O - Overall this is a very middle-of-the-road beer. It is drinkable but plain and forgettable, although it is better than the majority of watery Greek lagers.

With all the European lagers represented in Greece, a welcomed break delivers this Red Ale to my palate. Pouring a deep amber, slight brown color, the beer's appearance is mirrored with a light toasty, nutty flavor that's much more bold than the lighter fare of Greece. Caramel malts with a somehwat sun-kissed character gives the flavor of Amber Ales, but with the smooth lager flavor of pilsner malt and lack of yeasty fruit flavor. Also low on spice, hops, or depth of malty-rich complexity McFarland Red deviates from the classic example of Irish Red Ales with a more timid demeanor, especially going from mid palate to finish where the beer weakens considerably and takes on the flavor of flat cola in finish. Simplified and modestly weak, the saving grace of this beer is that I was desperate for anything other than another European pilsner.
