Poured 12 Oz bottle into a Sam Adams glass. Mahogany brown with a longer lasting creamy tab head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel and a little fruit. Taste is nice with a nice blend of the malt road rinses dialed back by the oatmeal. Has a bit of a fizziness to it but is otherwise nice and smooth.

Poured nicely on tap dark brown with ruby tinge,nice tan colored head wich went away quickley.Smelled very much like roasted malt with chocolate also prevalent.A little more hoppy than I expected with some fruity character to go with chocalty taste.A little thin in body and mouthfeel for me,but it went down pretty easy.

Nice beer. Many thanks to AutumnalDave for the sample. Pours jet black with a monstrous tan head. Awesome retention. Smooth, sweet aroma of oats, chocolate, and surprisingly hops, of the citrus and floral varieties. Full bodied and full flavored with oats, nuts, sweet malts, bits of baker’s chocolate, and a sip of coffee. Creamy and rich yet accessible as can be. Very drinkable.

Pours a deep brown from the bottle allowing for a single finger of ecru head. The aromas are nott too telling for such a flavorful beer. The taste explodes with coffee, bittersweet chocolate, nuts, and oats. The flavors are many and all complementary of one another. The taste of this porter is big on all fronts and pleasant all the way down to faint taste of alcohol that gives the porter its warming effect. The bittersweet chocolate finishes the beer on the pallet. This porter has a richness that I expected more from a stout but the brew is not thick. The balance in the flavors is mirrored in the body and the overall drinkability of the porter is really good.

A: Very dark brown, nearly black. Very thin light brown head when poured from bottle into a pint glass. Head dissipated very quickly but there was good lacing throughout.

S: An interesting mix of sweet maltiness and coffee

T: Roasted chocolate flavors with a malt sweetness balanced with a sharp hop character. The malts come through strong but the hop bitterness finishes nicely.

M&D: Nice full bodied and chewy. Very smooth and goes down really easy.

Thiis review is for a bottled version but I have had this on tap at the McGregor Ale House in Cary, NC. Very enjoyable, predominantly malty, and great body. I am enjoying the heck out of the Highland line-up and the Oatmeal Porter is no exception. Even though it's just a little bit rough around the edges, I'm finding that I am really enjoying that in my beer lately. Call me crazy but it's a nice change from the ultra refined macros or the centuries old refinements found in the Belgians. I'm diggin' it and looking forward to some more!

The Highland Oatmeal Porter pours from the bottle a lovely deep charcoal black with a creamy tan head on top that leaves some spotty lacing. Aromas of roasty dark malts, chocolate chunk, some dark fruitiness, a hint of coffee and bitter green hops. Nice.

First sip brings a smooth roasty, toasty, slightly smoky maltiness accentuated by chocolate notes and light hints of bitter coffee grounds. Some green, mildly piney hops work there way to the back of palate as this porter finishes quite dry. A tad bit chalky on the roof of the mouth, but overall a nice brew.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a smooth carbonation that works quite well. I could easily sit down to a few of these as it's one of my favorite styles...but I do feel there are better porters out there that I would probably choose first. Thanks to kmpitz2 for the opportunity.

Poured with a thin tan head on top of a nearly opaque black body. Smells of weak coffee with hints of dark fruits. Slightly sweet smell overall. Taste is of dry oatmeal with a touch of toasted malts in the background. There is a bitter finish as well which goes well with the dry initial flavors. Mouthfeel is good but nothing to write home about. Drinkability is really good and I’ll certainly pick up another 6’er at some point in the future. Overall this is a good easy drinking dry porter.

12 oz brown bottle with no freshness date. Thanks to bocktech for the sample.

Appearance: The head looks like a superbly frothed cappuccino leaving thick rings of lace down the glass. Two shades away from total black, you can make out some deep red highlights.

Smell: Sweet malts with a mild roasted tone in the back and a silkiness of the oats.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Creamy smooth, very luxuriant in the mouth with its full body. Thick underlying coffee flavour throughout with a nice heavy hand of sweetness that is restrained by the roasted malt and hop bitterness. Finish bitter sweet with a lingering creaminess.

Notes: I could certainly quaff a few pints of this, nice to see a long smoothness in a porter rather than the harsh crispness that some do have. A choice pick if you can get your hands on some.

Label says this was contract brewed by Frederick Brewing, of Maryland. Pours a deep, dark, brown, not quite black, but opaque body with a thick, two finger, tan head. Average retention and nice, patchy lace is left down the glass as it empties.

Aroma features roasted chocolate malt, and hints of bittter herbal hops, nuttiness, and old coffee.

Mouthfeel is rich and coating, with medium body and carbonation.

Roasted chocolate malt is dominant on the palate, but has an oatmeal smoothness. Espresso and cocoa powder are there as well. Hops bitterness is more than adequate to balance the chocolate sweetness, and even has a note of black pepper for emphasis.

This is a well done porter that has pleasing complexity. It seems thinner toward the finish, which adds to drinkability.

An extremely dark brown with a half finger of tan head...half of it sticks around and produces very nice lacing.
Sweet milk aroma with a pinch of hot chocolate in the nose.
The taste is pretty good...nowhere near the sweetness I was expecting and a nice addition of hops to bitter it up in it's finish. Well balanced flavors of coffee and chocolate...not pushing any envelopes here and very glad to see that. The alcohol is well hidden as it should be.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, the carbonation is where I like it and goes down very easily.
A nice offering from Highland.

picked this one up while vacationing at the Outer Banks. Was in a 12oz brown long neck bottle with crimped cap poured into a nonic glass.

Black,reddish hue in light,not quite opaque. 3" creamy tan head receding slowly leaving clumpy chunks of lace along the way.

Roasty,peat,slightly vinious,pine resin,burnt carmell with rolled oats.

Tastes roasty,black coffee,chocolate,lot of maltiness,and complexity. Also earthy tastes with a crisp,sharp,bittersweet finish with a roasted chocolate fade. Well balanced beer.

Light feel,yet full,smooth and juicy make for good drinkability. Tasty beer wish i had another.

Pours a very dark, nearly opaque garnet/black. Small tan head that left town fast. Smells of oatmeal, fig, and raisin. I likee.

The taste is very smooth. The oatmeal stands out with the dark malts and coffee coming through. The oatmeal confused my mouth. It kept waiting for the stout bite that never came. Carbonation is on the low side, which makes it seem even smoother. A really nice and intersteing variation on a porter. Get you some.

Poured a nice dark ruby, with good light brown lacing.

Smell - wonderful, just like it says, an oatmeal porter. Oatmeal, coffee, some toffee, and that nice roasted malt aroma. Smells like a wonderful breakfast bread with a dark roasted coffee.

Taste - this seems to be a let down after the wonderful aromas. I've rarely had a beer that smells better and richer than it tastes. Hops bitterness, some coffee flavors, a little bit of sweetness (not much). Hmmm.

Mouthfeel - good, fine carbonation levels.

Relatively drinkable, but probably won't have another one tonight.

Highland Oatmeal Porter is okay. It's not bad, but it is not a beer I'd seek out again. I'm not sure why it's rated as highly as it is by the Bros, probably because they reviewed this beer ten years ago and the recipe and/or our expectations have changed since then.

I poured this beer into a Yard's tulip, fairly roughly, but managed only to stir up a couple centimeters of sand colored foam that quickly faded to just an irregular ring of tight foam. The beer is a clear dark brown with mahogany highlights on the edges. The beer smells smoothly roasty with notes of sweet malty grain. The beer tastes surprisingly watery for an American Porter with just a little bit of roast character, little body and not much caramel. It's a weird beer and definitely not what I expect from an oatmeal porter.

It's too light in color, too thin, not chocolately enough, undercarbonated, too dry. It just doesn't taste as full in flavor or body as I would have wanted. Not bad, but undeserving of this aggregate score.

Appearance: dark molasses like brown with garnet highlights, great clarity, tan thin head

Aroma: roasty but not overwhelmingly so, slight bitterness, a little dark fruitiness like a fruitcake,

Taste: great roasty flavor but also supported by more fruity and a little caramel malt flavor that definitely distinguishes it from stout status. Balanced finish but a little residual sweetness. Great oatmeal addition brings a little fullness to the flavor

Mouthfeel: smooth and a little silky, but not as silky as an oatmeal stout. Crisp finish, full body and medium carbonation

Overall: a great mix of roasty, fruity, and bold flavors that finishes smooth and crisp. A great late fall quaff that can be either sipped or gulped.

On Tap at The Globe in Athens

A: Dark Brown with a small foamy head.

S: Roasted barley and chocolate. Everything I love about Porters.

T: Sweet Porter flavors. Malts dominate, bitterness from chocolate and maybe a touch of hops on the back end.

M: Very smooth with a medium body.

D: Very drinkable porter. I could easily work on these all night.

Overall, a smooth, solid Porter.

12 oz bottle served in a Highland Brewing pint glass.

Pours a very dark reddish-brown. Nearly black but with just enough transparency to see that the beer is clear. A vigorous pour only yielded a 1-finger tan head, but the head had some retention and left plenty of irregular lacing.

Aroma: rather hoppy for style, meaning that there is a clear hop note, and suggestions of spices, mixed with the aroma of toasted grains.

T - the hops are just strong enough to be present in the mouthfeel and taste, but take a backseat to the strong flavor of dark roasted barley. Some spicy and citrusy flavor in with the malt. Lasting, dark roasted malt finish and aftertaste with hints/traces of oatmeal, hops, peat smoke, coffee and dark chocolate.

M: smooth, semi-dry finish; medium body; Very good carbonation.

Overall score bumped up to 4.25 owing to the strong performance on all dimensions.

Got this on-tap at the Raging Burrito in Atlanta.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black color with a one-finger frothy tan head. The head sticks around for a bit before receding into a wispy layer of bubbles on top and a medium-sized ring around the glass. Lacing is good.

Smells mostly of roasted malts with a good amount of sweetness.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Roasted malts balanced with sweet malts ending with a good amount of bitterness. The roasted flavor lingers for a while.

Mouthfeel is good. It's a bit too carbonated at first but it seems to smooth out a bit as it warms. The thickness is good throughout.

Drinkability is good. There's not a whole lot going on but what's done is done well.

Overall this is a solid porter that's a tad smoother than most thanks to the oatmeal. Worth a shot.

I'm giving this beer a decent review, even though it wasn't to my liking, because I think for fans of porters it's a worthwhile brew. However, like many porters and dark micro brews, I found it to be overpoweringly bitter for my liking. I

t's very stout and fairly dry, with some sweetness on the backend from the oatmeal and a little hoppiness you might not expect. It has almost a burnt taste to it, rather than the smooth full bodied flavor I prefer in a darker beer.

I think fans of porters will enjoy it. However, to me it tasted fine at first, but after half a glass it became an unpleasurable chore to drink due to the strong bitterness that's characteristic of the style. I wanted to like it, but at the end of the day I must confess it was too dark and bitter for my tastes. I didn't finish ths bottle.

I have actually tried this several times, both from a tap and from the bottle. I will say I think it's better on draught.

I tried this porter several years ago and tried it again and rated it a bit higher in my database.

The brew ours to a nice tan head that dissapates fairly quickly but has some lace.

There is a slightly malty aroma that is about right for the style.

The color is a dark brow that is quite tranlucent which makes it look like a dark ale instead of a porter.

The oatmeal rounds out the malt in the mouth and the finish dry malt with a hint of choclate.

A- This beer has a jet brown body with a hint of brown color glowing at the base. There is a creamy light tan head that has a slight yellow hue to it and a several random bubbles pushing through it. There is no sign of carbonation except for a few tiny bubbles stuck to the glass.

S- The smell of dark smooth black roasted malt has some dark chocolate malt notes and a hint of creamy. There is a light smoky peat note that increases as the beer warms but just accents the other aromas.

T- The dark creamy roasted malt has a faint peat taste but not enough to taste like band aids. There are some nice caramel malt notes that come through aswell. There is a soft tartness and a nice roasted malt bitterness at the finish that lingers just a bit after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a tight fizz finish that enhances the roasted bitterness.

D- This beer is very drinkable but has nice depth of flavor. Finally some found just the right amount of peat malt to put in a beer. It accents the other malts but doesn't taste like a first aid cabinet fell into the pot.

12oz. brown bottle, brought back from Myrtle Beach by the room mates, poured into an imperial pint.

A: Deep woody brown, opaque. 2 fingers of light mocha head forms and holds nicely. Good lacing.

S: Plenty of toasty malts, maybe even a touch of some roast. Nice wholesome(?lol) oatmeal aroma. A bit of bitter aroma... roasted malts?

T/M: Spent coffee grinds and definitely a bit of roast. Plenty of toasted malts. The oatmeal is great, adding more complexity with some nuttiness. Body is full, rich, and smooth from the oats. Nice smooth carbonation as well.

D: Low ABV and very tasty. Full mouthfeel slows you down just a touch but I could drink this a bunch.

12 oz brown bottle with no best by date. A black liquid with hints of ruby and brown poured into a mug. There is light lacing but poor to little head retention. The little that is there is khaki in color and resides on the edge where the beer meets the glass.

Smell has hints of coffee and chocolate, some dark roasted malts and some caramelized raisins.

Taste and mouthfeel; it has the same chocolaty and malty flavors as in the scent but there is also a hoppy bitterness that sticks to the tip of you tongue. Its not biting but a pleasant sensation that is intriguing enough and leads you to try more. The aftertaste is heavy on the malts and caramel but slightly dry, again leading you to try more.

This a slightly above average porter that doesn't have an apparent oat profile one would expect from an oatmeal porter. I also am slightly disappointed with it appearance scent and taste. However it has an interesting and innovative mouthfeel and drinkability that make up for those shortcomings.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

A - Black but not fully opaque when held to the light. Some reddish shines through when held to the light. There was very little head, and what was there dissipated quickly after pour. Not much lacing left behind as I drank this down, but it was very invited on a cold night here in PA.

S - Major smells that shine through are malt & coffee - with some nutty and chocolate tones coming through too, but there could be more.

T - Biggest taste that hits me is the nutty flavor, followed by coffee with a little chocolate to end it all.

M - Low carbonation which makes the mouthfeel creamy and smooth.

D - Very easy drinking. I would have another if I had one, will keep my out for this one again.

This beer poured a very deep brown, pretty much black color with a slight tan head that ran away quickly and left a floating island in the middle. The aroma was pretty much all malt and a touch of sweetness. The taste is a good melting of malts and chocolately goodness. There is also a tad bit of hop bitterness to round it all out and make for a strong mouthfeel and a very drinkable beer.
