Highland’s most robust beer, having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. It is black in color with a very clean finish and moderate hop flavor.
While the porter style was developing, some brewers produced a stout porter and over time generated a new style known simply as stout. These beers traditionally contain a distinct roasted malt flavor and can run the gamut from a dry stout, such as Guinness to a sweet stout such as Watney’s Cream Stout. Our Black Mocha falls in the sweet stout range and derives its chocolate and coffee tones from the use of appropriate roasted malt grains and is very often used as an after dinner libation or an accompaniment to dessert.

One of the standards by which American craft stouts should be measured. Beautiful malt character, balanced roast bitterness, and overall a benchmark craft pioneer stout.

Appearance: Jet black with a khaki, creamy head with good retention.
Aroma: Tons of roasted malt, chocolatey aromas.
Flavor & Aftertaste: Roasted malt, cocoa, coffee. Moderate bitterness. Medium sweetness.
Mouth-feel: Medium bodied, low to medium carbonation. Lengthy finish with roasted malt flavors lingering. Maybe a little over carbonated.
Overall: Just like on the bottle. A rich, malty stout displaying loads of roasted malt flavors: cocoa, chocolate, coffee. Not heavy, despite the jet black appearance. Very pleasant and well suited for colder months. Well crafted beer.

12 ounce bottle in a snifter.
Pours opaque black in color with a modest mocha tan cap. Decent ring lacing for a dry stout.
Roasted malt and coffee with a hint of milk chocolate.
Flavor comes from the roasted malt; coffee and cocoa powder.
It’s light and smooth. Very clean with no mineral or metallic feel, they’re roasting nicely.
While not necessarily “robust “ it was good low abv dry stout. Nice flavorful drink that went well with a light dessert.

Picked up as part of a mixed 12 pack on 12-19-20 for $16.97. Filled on 11-20-20; consumed 12-22-20.
Beer poured black with a nice off white head that is leaving some lacing behind.
Nose is medium roasted malts with a touch of coffee.
Taste is pretty well done with the smallish medium roasted malt base that provides notes of chocolate and mocha. Finishes pretty well balanced from a decent amount of hops.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and kind of smooth.
Overall a nice flavorful session stout. Nice to have these every so often!

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with tall, long lasting, creamy, brown head and nice lacing. Aroma is of toasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate and grassy hops. Body is medium, creamy and slightly crisp. Taste is of burnt grain, chocolate, brown sugar, dark fruit, coffee, toasted malt and earthy hops. Finish is long and dry. Good brew.

Looks good, low, sparse head of tan foam over an opaque red-black beer.
Aroma is vaguely stoutish with sweet, dark malt aroma and hints of coffee and toffee.
Flavor is bigger than dry stout, solid malt up front but little heft in the body to back it up brings it back into dry stout range..
Hop profile is non existent as the dark malt and coffee flavors dominate, giving it roasted character without the malt richness that was teased at the start.
Dry stout? Okay... kind of but there is some malt depth if just in roasted coffee and grain character and the mild hop bittering is weak and not drying on the finish as I'd expect.
But I probably nit pick here. As a dry stout this begs off needing depth or complexity and it achieves that, in a good way.

12oz bottle from the variety pack, picked it up on vacation in TN
Looks great, dark with great lacing and retention. Just a beaut. Smells and tastes very roasty, with a hoppy finish. It just tastes much better than it smells, is all
Very enjoyable.
