Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Jason on 12-09-2002

Highland’s most robust beer, having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. It is black in color with a very clean finish and moderate hop flavor.

While the porter style was developing, some brewers produced a stout porter and over time generated a new style known simply as stout. These beers traditionally contain a distinct roasted malt flavor and can run the gamut from a dry stout, such as Guinness to a sweet stout such as Watney’s Cream Stout. Our Black Mocha falls in the sweet stout range and derives its chocolate and coffee tones from the use of appropriate roasted malt grains and is very often used as an after dinner libation or an accompaniment to dessert.

Very drinkable, but not a whole lot going on in the flavor department. Perhaps it was my food-pairing, but I got absolutely not even a hint of mocha.

Nitro turbo draft. The stuff pours nice with nice head. Smells like peppermint which is nearly repulsive to me. Ru oh..tastes like peppermint. One taste was all I needed. Not my cup of tea. Thin, watery stout that tastes like peppermint. Groan.

Black Mocha Stout pours an almost black color with a nice large head. There is a weaker oatmeal aroma. The taste is a bit weak, nice oatmeal flavors, hints of mocha. Weaker flavors. Overall its nice, pretty plain, the weaker flavors do take away.

A deep brown with a light tan head that leaves nice tight sticky lacing. The aroma tends to the mild, with just hints of dark roasted malt and maybe a little cocoa. The taste is also deep roasted malt, with just a hint of earthy hops but it has a nice simple quality to it. The body is lighter, but with with a nice full finish.

Black, clear beer with a one finger high, beige-brown head.

Nose: Coffee, tobacco, roasted malt, dark chocolate, malt and dried fruit.
Taste: Coffe beans, red berries, dark chocolate, roasted malt and hay.
Body: Medium to full body with light carbonation.

Great stout!

Thin black pour with dark tan head;fruit and chocolate whispers; thin mouthfeel/lite tongue coating;coffee bean and thin malt start; light and easy to drink; I like how the coffee flavor is just barely there; chocolate malt and a little hop bitterness round out the finish; a very drinkable lite stout.

Industry standard brown bottle, from a Make-Your-Own 6 pack, that I brought back from Carolina.
The beer pours black in color, with a thin tan head. Foam slowly faded down and left spider web pattern of lace.
Smell was very light, some roasted malt, maybe chocolate.
The taste was similar to the smell, quite light toasted grains, minor chocolate or cocoa, but really struggled to find any coffee or mocha flavors. Bitter, but astringent rather than a cold coffee bitterness.
Medium bodied, moderate amount of carbonation, dry finish.
The beer is easy to drink, which in this case is kind of a negative. I wanted more bold and strong flavors, and a thick fuller mouth feel. An OK stout, but for me didn't live up to a mocha stout.

A purchase from a trip to Tennessee last July, bottled 4/4/14, so this has over eight months age on it.

a; Opaque black with a glimmer of clear ruby at the bottom, inch thick tan head receded slowly to thick surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Black coffee.

t: Primarily smoky malt up front with a light hop bite. Sweet finish. Later some dark chocolate and black coffee emerges.

m: Light to medium, perhaps lighter than expected for a stout. Good carbonation tingle.

o; Not getting an awful lot of "mocha," but a good if lightish easy drinking stout. I'd tend to call this a porter based on mouthfeel and ABV.

Smooth drinking, stout beer with exceptional flavor. A winter time seasonal favorite. This beer is only made for a few months each year& released in the winter season. A must have for the winter season.

This has a very good aroma of mocha, espresso, light char and toasted oats. The flavor has a creamy mocha, charred oats, smokiness, charcoal embers, bits of coffee roast and a bitter finish. My only complaint is its a tad too watery which takes away from the overall experience.

Dark in color as are most stouts. smells and tastes of coffee with some chocolate notes. Flavor is not as strong as I was hoping. easy to drink, but nothing really special about it.

Pours dark, thin head. Flavor isn't as bold as I'd prefer, but not wimpy, either. Mouthfeel is a little light, too; but again, not bad. Hoppy finish is nice.

Kind of an "easy drinking" stout; not massive like I generally prefer my stouts, but definitely enjoyable.

A - Dark. Typical of a stout, especially one with black mocha in its name. Poured with very thin had which dissipated quickly into a thin film. Slight lacing.

S - Smells really fantastic man. Smells like coffee and chocolate, with grapey notes as well. Smells hugely like coffee. Well...like a mocha latte or something >.>

T - Taste is also fantastic. Tastes pretty much how it smells. Coffee, chocolate, bit of darkc hocolate bitterness on the finish. You can definitely taste the lightly roasted malt too. I do taste a hint of dark fruit somewhere int here. It's slight, but it's there.

M - Average carb, full body

O - Very tasty, but really honestly nothing too special. I feel like I've drank it before when I had other stouts. Nothing really stand outtish.

Highland Black Mocha Stout has a very thick, beige head, a black (with brown highlights) appearance, and some web lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, very dark roasted (but, not burned) barley malt, coffee, cream, and chocolate. Taste is of those elements, with a noticeable bitterness, probably coming from the char. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Highland Black Mocha Stout finishes rich and delicious and semi-wet. RJT

One of my new favorite beers. This one whee poured from a bottle into a pint, had a very dark, almost black coloring, with a light tan head. Stout flavor bitter but did not bite. Smooth with a pleasant after taste.
Nice lace on the rim, coffee and chocolate notes on the nose.
My only complaint is I didn't freeze the glass.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a very dark, brown-to-black coloring, with a filmy, surface coating of light tan head. Aromas of lightly roasted coffee, crème highlights, and subtle chocolate notes. Very well balanced nose. Flavors are roasted and bittersweet forward, with a blast of coffee, crème, and hints of smoke. Chocolate highlights, with a solid bitter backbone. The body is light and dry, with a tangy sweet and roasted bitter aftertaste. The finish is roasted, dry, and with a slightly bitter linger. Solid, drinkable brew.

Very smooth grassy taste, some chocolate. Malty. There's a bit of a metallic taste underneath. Some dark fruit flavor. A bit of coffee. Medium to full bodied. Flavorful, but a bit of a generic taste.

It's a very deep brown/black, that delivers a huge tan foamy head that leaves a good deal of lacing behind. Some streams of bubbles going up the side. It has a slight mocha and metallic scent. Some chocolate malt.
