On-tap at Marin. Served in a tulip. Finally got a chance to try this after missing out numerous times in the past.
A - White foam settles to a thick collar and splotchy lace. Lightly transparent golden blonde body.
S - Green apple, bretty funk, light vinous oak, a bit of lemon, and a touch of malt sweetness.
T - The taste is interesting, as the vinous grapes, oak, and lemony sourness show up early on the palate before yielding to a finish of bready malts and slightly buttery Chardonnay. It's not often that I have a beer that is sour to start and funky in the finish, but it works surprisingly well.
M - Smooth body, pleasant carbonation, dry champagne-like texture, and no obvious alcohol present.
D - Really nice stuff, albeit not what I was expecting. For some reason (based on the name?) I thought this was a fruit sour, but it's a mildly vinous brett beer. In any case, it was much, much better than the Battle Priest we tried the next evening. I managed to drink two glasses with ease on the way back from Russian River.

Bottle purchased and consumed at the brewery last weekend, $25 for a corked and caged 750ml that came with a set of complimentary glasses.
The beer pours a stunningly clear straw yellow, pilsner-like, topped by two fingers of pure white head. The foam retains nicely, fed by a steady stream of carbonation. The beer poured perfectly clear until the final 2 or 3 ounces of the bottle.
The aroma is startlingly funky at first; barnyard and farm animal, rotten fruit and damp hay spring to mind. Further sniffing brings out a distinct Chardonnay barrel character, vinous and slightly buttery, along with sharply sour lemon and a hint of grain.
Lemony lactic sourness hits the palate first, quite tart but beautifully balanced and refreshing. Green apple, buttery Chardonnay and subtle pale malt flavors come out as I continue to sip. The texture is light, crisp, remarkably refreshing and balanced - it was a struggle to savor this beer. The finish is tart, citric and moderately tannic, though clean overall. I should be surprised by the lack of hype surrounding this beer, but most of what this brewery does seems to go under the radar. An exceptionally good sour that far surpassed my expectations.

An American Sour Ale presented in a 750ml unlabeled bottle at the brewpub in Larkspur. Only 264 bottles produced and only for on-site consumption. A blend of one year old and 3.5 year old brews aged in chardonnay barrels. Blended and bottled in June 09. Along with the champagne-like bottle came two flute style glasses with Cuvee Roge in red letters. Pours a straw yellow color with a strong white head with clingy lace. Lots of tiny bubbles attest to the secondary fermentation. The nose is pure barnyard brett funk. The taste is tart and dry, nutty, with an ever so slight oak and fruity back. Very smooth and mellow.
As it warms it has a "temptation-esque" quality but not as full flavored. Overall a very nice attempt at a wild sour ale. Well done. Only about 30 bottles remained as of 8/24/09 when tasted.

RBSG09 750 bottle at the brewpub. Pours a light gold color with a wet white head. Lemony chlorinic aroma, wheat, buttery oak. Grainy flavor with lemons and chardonnay. Solidly tart in both aroma and flavor but lacks the complexity of a Temptation or Isabelle. Still a nice beer and I hope they continue to experiment with sours.
