Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to psiweaver for a chance to try this. I think I'm reviewing the correct one. It has the same "2009 Bourbon Barrel Aged for Ten Months" sticker as the pic.

3.5 A: Super dark brown color. Nearly black. One and a half fingers of fizzy beige head that falls quickly and doesn't leave any lacing.

4.0 S: Yep, this is the brett one. That was easy enough to figure out. Lots of funk in there and also some fairly assertive acetic acid. Perhaps the brett brought a few friends along as I've never had this much acid from brett alone. Brett is horsey and barnyard and with the bourbon there is leather, oak, and vanilla. I can't smell much of the underlying barleywine except for some plum and raisin fruitiness. The funk and bourbon are the main attraction here. As the beer warms a bit, caramel and toffee maltiness comes out as well as stronger bourbon aroma.

5.0 T: Wow. I'm really amazed at how well this beer comes together in the taste. I thought it would be a mess, but it's anything but. Somehow the brett, bourbon, and barleywine form a holy union of deliciousness. Barnyard funk is a perfect complement to the leather, oak, and vanilla bourbon. I never would have guess that to be the case. The acetic acid in the nose is hard to come by in the taste and I think it's absence is for the best. The barleywine gets to shine alongside the bourbon and funk this time. Rich toffee and caramel. Plum, raisin, currant, and perhaps even some black cherry. Booze is barely noticeable, but it's presence is well received.

4.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Very creamy and very smooth. No problems here.

5.0 D: This is one hell of a beer. There's so much right with nothing wrong. Unlike a lot of bourbon barrel brews, the bourbon in this is complementary and doesn't steal the show. The addition of funk played out better than I ever could have imagined.

Upset about this one, I was in California and told this was a special gem and hard to find outside of that area so was excited to try it. Overall I would say fairly disappointing and forgettable. Immediate smell of sour fruit and alcohol and the taste was pungent with super sour fruit notes, strong alcohol and an unpleasant lingering of this sour fruit and overpowering alcohol sourness. I typically love barleywines but unfortunately wouldn't want this one again

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2012 bottle.

Appearance - Pours without much of a head. Some off white foam. Thin collar.

Smell - Bourbon . Sharp bright alcohol flavor. Not a ton of oak. Some caramel.

Taste - Lots of caramel. Bourbon. Vanilla. No real oakiness. Some sharp acidic notes, but it doesn't taste like brett. Could just be barrel.

Mouthfeel - A little boozier than the regular version. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Good stuff. Sharp flavors that work very well.

2009 bottle.

Pours a hazy brown color with a smallish light tan head that recedes to leave some very minimal lacing.

Aromas begin with some tart sourness and light oakiness. As it warms I get some more caramelized malt backbone and some dark cherry fruitiness. Comes across as muddled however.

The tastes begin with a solid toffee and brown sugar maltiness. Next you get a slight bid of tart sour cherries and an muddy vanilla bourbon induced flavor. The brett yeast adds a complexity to the flavor profile but doesn't come across as a harmonious melange. The oak and dark fruit flavors emerge more and more as it warms. Some hop bitterness still lingers in the background into the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with a moderate to low carbonation. FInish is pleasantly dry thanks to the brett yeast.

Overall this was okay but not really a great beer. The brett yeast seems to have been asked to do too much to too hoppy of a base beer and the flavors fail to creat a harmoinous balance even after 3+ years. Drinks like less than 9% but you really dont want too much.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter. This was opened during a BA Barleywine tasting.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown with hardly any head. This one is just a little tart, due to the brett I'm sure. There is a pleasant sweetness throughout the taste with a slight bitterness in the finish. The bourbon note is rather mild but there is a noticeable alcohol burn. The sweet and tart notes work together, but this one didn't blow me away.

2011 vintage. Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Half Acre snifter.

A- pours a murky brown with a 1 finger tan head. A few blotches of lacing remain on the glass.

S- dark fruits, bourbon, brown sugar, some oak and vinous notes.

T- roasted malts, brown sugar, sour dark fruits, red wine, oak, and slight bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation.fairly smooth and has a slight dryness at the finish.

O- interesting and different beer. More BA Flanders Than Barleywine, but like the clashing styles.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a clear mahogany hue with a half finger light tan head that leaves light, faint wisps.

S - Nice aromas of bourbon, sweet malts, and light toffee. Light vanilla and oak along with soft figs.

T - Similar to the nose. Everything is quite light here with light raisin/fig notes, faint bourbon and oak, along with light sweet malts. Don't really get much Brett unfortunately.

M - Mouthfeel is chewy, creamy, lightly carbonated, slight bourbon, along with light booze.

O - Overall, a nice beer. Would have liked to see some Brett aspects in this beer. Very glad to have tried this beer.

Thanks to Andy (don't remember your BA name) for this one, 2011 vintage.

Pours a nice fizzy head to start, fades fairly quickly, decent spotty lacing, mostly hazy ruby molasses color.

Nose starts with sweet malts and light bourbon, big sweet candy malts, light esters, some vanilla like oak and maybe a hint of bourbon, sweet toffee and molasses, some dark fruits fig and date like, and light earthy hops, and faint hint of bready funk.

Taste is lighter, sweet toffee, candy, caramel, molasses, light bourbon and toasty vanilla oak again, bit of raisin and fig like dark fruits, light spicy hops, light warming booze, faint hint of bready funk. Finish has light spicy hops again, sticky sweet, booze warmth and a little tingle, light candy sweet malts lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, lighter carb, plenty of warming booze.

Overall pretty good, nice malts, bourbon, but the Brett is almost non-existant, just faint hints.

22oz wax capped bomber. 2011 Edition. Served in a snifter.

Drinking side-by-side with a year old regular version.

Pours a darker root beer brown, and more opaque, than the regular version with almost no head. A ring of loose beige bubbles lines the glass. No real lacing.

Aroma of dusty oak along with funky peppercorn, some vanilla. Subdued molasses and brown sugar from the regular version. Dark fruits in background. A bit of bourbon and booze.

A little more bourbon in the initial flavor than the nose. Middle gets slightly briny, and some of the funky peppery notes emerge.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Fairly slick, and a little creamier than the regular version.

I like both versions of this beer and don't think I have a favorite. The barrel aging and brett make the variations fairly different.

2011 vintage

taste- raisin, cinnamon, bourbon, prunes, maple syrup

color- deep chestnut

clarity- pours clear and dark

smell- woody, winey, barnyard, dried fruit

body- the barrel aging mellows the alcohol and lends it a soft mouthfeel. subtle medium-length finish, some hop bite at the front of the mouth and the center of the tongue

appearance- very little carbonation, slightly off-white bubbly ring around the glass...faint hints of lace

overall impression- mellow, drinkable beer. i think i would have consumed this 6 months earlier to appreciate more aroma and body. almost seems like a good portion of the alcohol has fallen off in the weight of the beer but it creeps up on you. based on what i understood, recommendations were to let this beer sit a year after release...not sure i would do so in the future

notes and comments- very little carbonation when i popped the top
