Bottled 7/28/11.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, fruits, and grape juice. Taste is much the same with a very sweet and fruity flavor. There is a slight alcohol kick with each sip as well. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is pretty tasty and easy to drink.

B-

750ml into a tulip. Pours an orange yellow, dense towering white head forever to recede, nice lacing.

Aroma is mildly fruity, mild spices, yeast and mildly musty as well. mild

Taste is grainy, light dry fruits. Dull bland straw skews the slight bitterness to its detriment without contributing an offsetting dank. Thin yet creamy bodied, vaporizes to foam with the slightest swish.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass.

I believe this is my first Biere de Garde as I actually bought this thinking it was a blonde beer in a french supermarket just outside Geneva. The label is a bit misleader as it claims to be a "biere blonde" which i assumed was just a standard blonde beer but this is actually classified as a biere de Garde.

Appearance: Perfect clarity, tangerine, copper body with moderate carbonation rising from the bottom. Big fluffy white head leaving crater-like divots as it recedes to an uneven 1 finger head leaving lacing down the side of the glass.

The aroma has a lot of grainy, almost like unpopped popcorn aromas that are slightly bitter. I also get some baked apple smells, maybe a touch of coriander on the end of the aroma. Fresh notes mixed with some grassy, grain and light baked apple notes dominate the aroma.

The taste is very sup rising. Really light, silky body that rolls across the palate leaving notes of peach peel, soft lemon notes, orange sweetness and a dry champagne like finish. Complexity really shines in this beer and the craftsmanship is easy to see here. Very enjoyable, has a honey suckle like sweetness to balance with the acidity that really is perfect.

Mouthfeel is nice. Good level of carbonation, lasting aftertaste that leaves sweet and bitter notes playing off the palate. The dry finish makes this an easy beer to re-visit after each sip. Great 750ml bottle allows you to see this beer as it warms up which benefits this beer greatly, but is also great and refreshing right out of the fridge.

Overall this beer is really singing to me. Not sure if this is typical biere de grade style, but to me it seems like a european blonde mixed with citrusy kolsch or even a blanche beer without the unfiltered wheat characteristics. Worth trying for sure if you can get it. I will get this again.

A: Crystal clear golden brew with a very thin layer of head that has a very long retention and leaves a fair amount of lacing.

S: Nothing too special in the aroma. It has very grainy smell with a heavy hit of yeast. The smell is fairly grassy.

T: Much the same as the smell with lots of grain and yeast in the forefront. It has a slight spiciness with a nice hit of floral notes in the middle. The beer has quite a bit of grainy bitterness throughout, which lasts from the beginning until long after the sip is finished.

M: Light body and lots of carbonation make it easy to drink. Very dry finish.

O: A pretty good beer. Easy to drink and refreshing, with a fair amount of flavor for such a light brew. I wish that it wasn't quite so bitter, because after a few sips that starts to overwhelm.

Golden straw colour with a large, foamy white head with good retention and visible carbonation.

Light and hoppy in aroma with some grass and malts coming through alongside some light floral notes and a fruity, apple like aroma coupled with some sugar.

Malts and a sweet fruity aroma, mainly apples, pear and a fair amount of sugar. There is also some yeast and a touch of spice to it. The taste is a nice one and fairly well balanced.

Smooth with a slightly sticky, sweet feel to it and a light to light medium body and solid carbonation.

Enjoyable beer here with a pleasant, fruity taste and good balance although it was very sweet. It wasn’t outstanding and to be honest probably not one I’d seek out again but still quite drinkable.

750ml bottle 11-28-11 cork and cage

Light amber color, very clear. Minimal head, some lacing. average carbonation. smell is unique. Grainy, musky funk. Almost a wine character.

Smooth first sip. What i believe is a grainy pilsner flavor. Light sweetness. It actually tastes like corn to me. Bitterness and overall hop presence is mild.

Light mouthfeel and refreshing, but also a bit bland. ABV is respectable. A notable sweet adjunct flavor I am not hugely fond of. Pretty unique though.

Sampled on April 7, 2012 at the Keene, NH Beerfest. The pour is golden with a white head and good retention. The aroma is malty and yeasty but hops are hard to discover. The body falls into the light to medium range. The taste is quite sweet with malts. It almost seems like overkill. There is a thin hop character that is next to impossible to find. This is one of those beers I have wanted to try but I am glad I got to try it at a brewfest rather than spend the $10 for it.

I enjoyed this beer from poured from a 750 mL bottle. The beer appeared a brownish to orange color, rust perhaps, with a big cap of white foam. The aroma seems to be fermented grain in character. This cellared malt reappears in the flavor profile. Some sweetness while the spice at the end is muted. The palate is dry. It tastes fine, but I would like to see a little more complex earthiness.

My label says it's a biere de garde but this seems to have two different images both the 750 ml bottle and the 16 ounce cans. Pours into a Allagash chalice, a deep honey amber body with birght white head forming thick, fine chunky sporadic lacing forms nicely. Aroma has some earthy spicy notes with some malt liquor esque cooked veggies and sweet apple cider notes coming off the nose. Flavor has a bit more than that going on spicy yeast, earthy herbal hops, with a flowing malt breadiness. Quite complex and aromatic compared to a standard malt liquor but the alcohol is well hidden it's hard to imagine this is near 8% alcohol by volume. The label is in French not quite sure what it says about the beer other than Houblon des Flanders (hops from Flanders). Bought from a small market/liquor store in East Liverpool called Rayl's. Decent selection for the Ohio Valley, never seen this beer anywhere else in the states and priced right at around 6 bucks. Seems like a mass produced biere de garde definitely not from a small farmhouse microbrewery, still pretty tasty. Overall effervescent carbonation medium bodied a bit cloying with sweetness between sips. Can't complain, this was the last bottle available there I'm glad I had the opportunity to try a new beer.

Here's what the English version of the website calls this beer, "a top fermenting lager"?

Gayant Brewers presents Goudale, a lager beer of top fermentation. Culled from an original medieval recipe, Goudale is a historic name.

Made from special malts and flavored with hops from Flanders, Goudale is a golden beer, dense, tasty and long in the mouth.

Synonym of quality for connoisseurs, symbol of quality for beer lovers, a hearty beer to be enjoyed amongst friends … without doubt, Goudale from Gayant Brewers is a beer everyone can agree to enjoy !

Poured from a 750mL caged-and-corked bottle into my Brawweurs de Garde tulip/flute.

Initial pour is clear gold with a finger of ivory. Ornate yet delicate lacing, very good retention.

Gentle aromatics suggest wild grass and winter fruit with a hint of funk that dissipates after a short time.Possibly a Pils malt base?

The flavors follow the nose closely with more of an emphasis on the fruit which comes across as an overripe pear at times. The subtle funk comes and goes as well. Finishes somewhat sweet, but not overly so.

Light bodied, gently carbonated, and soft mouthfeel.

Not an especially memorable ale, though it does distinguish itself with a subtle flourish of funk albeit finishing a little too sweet to be as refreshing as the better examples of the style.
