12 ounce bottle, with out brew date nor vintage info. Picked up as part of a six pack at City Market in Burlington, VT.
Pours darker honey amber, minor dark tan head, and just a few lace blobs left on the glass.
Caramel and peppery alcohol tendrils in the nose.
More caramel, light smoke, more alcohol, some rum soaked rasins. A wee bit on the thin side both flavor and body wise for the style.
Ehh, middle of the road barley wine, nothing special...sort of a decent summer sipper/nightcapper due to the lighter body of this one.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice.
Pours a light brown that's really clear with a small white head. Nose is light and malty and sharp.
Taste is tart and crisp and really malty. There's sharp clean mouthfeel with a sharp finish that's a bit bitter but well done.

Sampled on January 16, 2012. It pours medium amber with red highlights when held to the light. The head is about a half-inch thick and it leaves nicde, clinging lacing. The aroma has a more mellow malt character aloing with yeast and something like toffee. The hop notes are limited but it is not boozy. The body is medium to slightly heavy. I wonder if this one was stored prior to release because for a Barleywine it is very mellow and pleasant. The malts are not overwhelming and the hops tend to be only slightly bitter and a little on the dry side. A nice Barleywine for certain.

Growler poured into a pint glass.
Pours a clear amber color with a thin head that dissipates quickly with no lacing. Lots of dark fruit aromas mixed with oak. Sour cherry, raisin, vanilla, caramel flavors mix with orange rind for a nice flavor. Medium body, light carbonation, there is some warmth from the alcohol and a dry finish with a little pucker from the sour cherry. The complexity of different flavors makes you want another sip, fairly easy drinking for the 8% abv.

Pours hazy reddish brown with half finger light sand color head.
At first I smelled the bottle and thought, damn smells shitty. After the pour it kind of smelled similar to a triple with big malty fruits and hints of spice. Not getting much in terms of hops.
Eh. I really really wanted to give this beer a chance, especially because I enjoyed the art, but here its eh. Malty fruity candy then you can sense the yeast and some grains. There is a subdued bitter.
Mouthfeel is not there. Light medium, iffy carbonation.
Not impressed. Expected more, it seems incomplete. Dig the artwork though.

Poured a nice dark rich red color with a 1 finger tannish head. Head was gone in minutes, leaving just a small ring and slight bit of lacing in the middle. Small amount of sediment was visible. Aroma was nicely sugary sweet. Bits of smoke were picked up, as well as fruits. Perhaps a touch of vanilla as well. Flavor was very contrasting. Strongly tasted of alcohol and bitter berries. Felt thin and watery in the mouth. Didn't coat at all like a good barleywine should. Overall a very disappointing barleywine. The best thing was the flavor, the rest was pretty much forgetful.

Thanks to grassrootsvt for this fliptop bottle...
Appears a red toned amber with a small white head that fades into a huge collar. Streaky lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of cherries, roast malt, raisins, caramel, and fusel alcohol that reminds me of a young merlot.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a soft, warming, caramel, and raisin flavor swirling through the palate.
Mouthfeel is warming, full bodied, slightly thin and smooth on the swallow.

A- Dark red ale out of the bottle and into an oversized wine glass. Small light tan head forms briefly but it doesn't retain well. A small ring fails to lace the glass.
S- The aroma is somewhat strange to me. It has heavy buttery, caramel and fruit notes. The fruit kind of reminds me of fruit loops or something.
T- Raisin, dark fruit, caramel and buttery notes dominate the flavor. Once again the fruit is odd to me, almost like grape pits and cherry. It all comes together and has a candy sort of flavor. A bit of spicy, earthy hops.
MF- Silky body with smooth moderate carbonation. Slight bitters and some alcohol warmth. I guess the fruit reminds me of a very fruity wine, which didn't do it for me with the other strong ale flavors.
Just doesn't bring it like other Barleywines, the flavors are out of balance and don't come together well.

12 oz. bottle. Tinfoil covering cap. Very rustic. Kick-ass hand drawn black and white label with a dragon holding a skull, and a river of death eminating from a giant demon skull with horns. Oh yeah, the river has a fish skeleton in it and has a mini grave yard near it. Trout River Brewing Co. Boneyard Barleywine in a jagged, menacing font. Death by sharpie.
Grabbed 2 of these after Shaun E.'s Backwoods Brewdown.
Dark murky amber/copper color. 1 pinky head with decent retention. Thin lace clings to the walls of my Houblon Chouffe glass.
Aroma of wildflowers and spice. Swirled rather roughly I'm getting some decent hops smell, but needs to be worked up a bit. Sligh sweetness to the nose. Clover?
Unfortunately more nose than tongue on this one. Not too much hops to speak of tastewise. Slight bitterness, some honey/clover taste. Some maltiness, but nothing really comes to the forefront. Thin mouthfeel for a barleywine. Was expecting a bit more body. Decent drinkability for the style. Was hoping for more pronounced flavors though.
This was actcually my first Trout River beer. I'm sure it won't be my last though.

Pours a fizzy almost 1 finger head that fades at a slower pace, some lacing, over dark ruby maroon brown colored beer with a bit of yeast at the bottom.
Nose is interesting, it starts with a vanilla and oak like aroma, and a nutty hazelnut, quite a bit of hazelnut, french vanilla, kinda like a flavored coffee mix. Then molasses, caramel, reddish malts galore, plenty of toffee as well, then dark fruits, bit of fig and raisin, and some brandy like, and candy syrup, and just a bit of bitter earthy hops.
Taste starts with more dark malts and sweet flavors, tons of toffee, caramel, molasses, candy syrup, and more of the nutty flavors, hazelnut loaded again, and a bit of vanilla. Quite sweet, chewy malt like taste, and reddish brown toasty malts. A bit oxidized for some reason, then herbal bitter hops. Malts also bring a biscuit like toasty malt, and a bit syrupy. A hint of booze comes through with some warmth and slight esters, as well as more dark fruit like fig and raisin, and a light brandy flavor. Finishes fairly sweet still but drier than before, a nice warming booze feel, more syrupy flavors and toasty biscuit malts, and plenty of hazelnut and caramel malt flavors, and some earthy chewy hop bitterness.
mouth is a bit bigger bodied, decent carb, some warming booze.
Overall not bad, some nice malt flavors, although a bit oxidized, and hops were probably more dominant fresh. On top of that the hazelnut doesn't sit as well as it could. But still drinkable and a decent barleywine. Quite a bit of candy and sweet syrupy additions, which isn't a bad thing.

Pours a one finger khaki head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Clear deep amber/ruby color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Fruity caramel nose and flavor is sweet not so dark fruit and caramel. Not cloying. Higher ABV is hidden. $2.49 for a 12oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.

Slippery lace from a nearly non-existent head. Does leave some ring lace. Very cloudy, brown color liquor.
Sweet, nearly molasses aroma.
Very rich body with a relatively low carbonation. The sweetness shows up strongly. Nearly no hop presence. A little too coy for my tastes and I'd prefer a lot more hop bitterness to balance this out.

Appearance: Like the other trout river bres, this one had very little head. However, it did pour a decent dark brown color.
Smell: A wonderful sweet mixture of malts and hops, molasses, caramel and a hint of strawberries.
Taste: The smells come out more boldly in the taste, and the hops aggressively balance the malts.
Mouthfeel: The consistency was very thick and coated the palate thoroughly. The bitter quality of the hops make this more complex and very interesting. The brew mellows slightly as it warms.
Drinkability: This is the most drinkable barleywine I've ever had, with almost not hint of alcohol and no overly aggressive flavors.

Got this as an extra from aapp. Cheers!
A- Pours a deep reddish brown color with a thin white foam head that settles to a ring. Minimal lacing.
S- Dark fruits, spicy hops, and plenty of caramel sweetness makes up the nose.
T- Some bitterness initially with a round malt finish. The alcohol is noticeable adding some heat and body.
M- Full bodied with decent carbonation.
O- Overall, a very enjoyable brew. Would be interesting to try this one with some age due to the large alcohol presence in the flavor.

Tried for the first and only time (so far) at a Brewfest. The 3oz pour was a redish clear ale. It was as close as one can come to drinking a raisin. The tasting was perfect for a cool, crisp fall day in the moutains.
I will be on the hunt to find this w/out the long drive to the Brewery.
