12 oz brown bottle with no freshness date, hmm odd purple label. Frothy stout like head that stays around a while, very dark brown colour with noticeable sediment particles floating around.

Mildly acrid burnt aroma, smell of charcoal and powdered carob.

Thin slick smoothness on the tongue, mildly acidic roasted twang with a thinnish malt body and flavour. Hops are light and get lost in the mix, earthy flavour burst middle to end with charred wood and yeast. Faint hints of a watery dark chocolate are a distant echo in the drying finish.

The brew has no gusto, where is the body and where is the flavour? You can tell the oats are there but with the off flavours nothing really comes through correctly. A far cry from a stout let alone a chocolate oatmeal stout.

Presentation: 12oz bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Nice deep & dark coloured brown beer with mohogany edges and a tan cream head that settles to a thin creamy lace.

Smell: Slightly acrid with some chocolate and roasted in the nose.

Taste: Even medium bodied with a coarse mouthfeel. A very acrid and roasted beer with hickory, light chocolate malts and some hop bitterness making up the majority of the flavours. Malt flavour / sweetness is low. Finish is a bit dry with an unpleasant after taste.

Notes: A bland beer with little depth. Way too roasted and unbalanced as a result. The name builds an expectation that the beer never lives up to. Thin, lackluster and "why?" comes to mind after drinking this beer.

Thanx Johnnnnieee.

Into a nonic.

A: dark brown colored body with less than a one finger white foamy head that doesn't rise above the bulge in the glass, the head lasts less than thirty seconds

S: very caramel forward (interesting as the bottle says "chocolate oatmeal stout"), but I have to admit it seems kinda off for the caramel tones coming out, after some warming up, I do get some roasty malts with some milk chocolate

T: kinda bitter and zesty (I think I'm getting some lemon through the flavoring); strange zesty lemon/orange yet somewhat chocolate caramel aftertaste (unsure how I really feel about this), no finish

M: light on the body to show a decent sessionable aspect to it, carbonation is fairly high in this one, some vinous-like qualities impart a harshness rolling around the mouth and tongue to instill a harsh lemon quality on the palate

O: interesting to say the least, exceptionally light for an oatmeal stout, not as much chocolate as expected by the side of the bottle. It would've been nice to see a date as I see its only 4.9% (I wonder when this was brewed last). Probably wouldn't seek this out again (just something that didn't fit quite right with this one), though its nice to try a brew from a company I've never had before.

12 ounce bottle into snifter

A: pours a dark brown with a small tan head

S: a little chocolate and tart cherries

T: sour, small hints of chocolate and oatmeal but pretty much nonexistent

M: heavily carbonated and kinda thin

O: you should pass on this one, not even close to a chocolate oatmeal stout

Looks like a brown ale, not a stout. Smells like some toxic chemical that I'm trying to recall. Tasted like fruit juice and piss, with a chemical aftertaste.

I spat out what I could, but it was enough to give me a headache within minutes.

Maybe, if enough people return this crap to where they bought it, they'll stop making it. THIS IS NOT A STOUT!!! I'll never buy anything from Trout River again. I think there were cleaning chemicals in this batch!

A: The beer is clear very dark amber in color (black when viewed from quite some distance) and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high dense beige head that died down a bit but never completely faded away.
S: Light to moderate aromas of chocolate are present in the nose along with notes of roasted malts.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts along with notes of chocolate and hints of sourness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and somewhat thin and watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be a lot lighter in body compared to other oatmeal stouts and doesn't have any smoothness.

look: 3.5 | smell: 1.5 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 1.5 | overall: 1.5

Appearance: has the consistency of a lager as I am pouring it into my glass. Black body with a half finger light tan head that leaves a spot of lacing here or there.

Aroma: oh no, sour, sour mash, sour apple mash, nothing else

Flavors: do I really want to drink this. No, but in the name of science I’ll do it. Yes, it is … sour! Sour Stout cool. But, the is a chocolate oatmeal stout and I was in the mood for a really good one.

Mouthfeel: lively carbonation, a sparkling wine like carbonation during the first half, thin on flavors, no depth, just sour, light tartness on the aftertaste

To the Point: no chocolate, no oatmeal or grains, no stout,

I think it is a cool sour stout.

look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 2 | feel: 1.75 | overall: 2

Appearance: dark brown with weak lacing that disappears rather quickly.

Smell: Roasted malts, oatmeal and chocolate. Small notes of something fruity that I can't quite put my finger on... lemon, perhaps? After a few whiffs I realize that this smells a lot lighter than a lot of stouts I've had.

Taste: something pretty disappointing. Once you get past the obvious malts, oatmeal and chocolate, I swear that this tastes like a wine. Almost tastes sour.

Mouthfeel: not exactly an explosion of amazement. Dry and thin. Very little thickness to this beer.

Overall, I'm a sucker for a stout, so you could say I'm biased. However, any bias that I DO have has very little bearing on my final judgment of this brew. Not crazy about it at all. No stout should ever finish this dry and wine-esque.
