Dark, bright and clear amber. Dank, resiny hop aroma which leads to a bit of a disappointment when the flavor comes around as there's not any real "hop bitterness." There's plenty on overall hop character though, with earth notes and more of a resiny feel. I thought the malt presence was a bit lacking, hence not a lot of balance going on (expected with IPA these days, but this was a bit more noticeable) and the lightness of the body. A touch of sweetness, and some fruity afters.

Some tweaking in the malt department and a bit more alpha acid hops and this has the potential of being a damn fine IPA for a brewpub that churns out some mediocre beers. That said, this is still a good beer and probably one of their finer offerings.

A-Clear red-amber w/decent head and nice lacing.

S-Sweet mealy fruit and grain, creamed corn, faint butter, lighter hops than I would expect in this variety. Possible DMS.

T&M-Sweet but weak-bodied malt w/was reminiscent of creamed corn and did not provide the necessary backbone needed for this style. Little balance w/a lingering sweet grainy flavor w/little definition that I would have to describe as flabby. There was a little short burst of hops in the finish that also could use some amping up. I'm not a huge hophead, so although I like full-flavored brews, this one could be improved w/some small tweaking and become a modest-to-good IPA with better balance. Not sure what's up w/the malt, but the recipe might just need more of it. Body was also light, and carbonation was a little low as well. Balance was missing, but is not far off the mark.

D-Lots of room for improvement. Quaffable, but not overly enjoyable.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light earthy hop and a slight sweetness.

The taste was well balanced with the herbal hop taking hold toward the finish.

The mouthfeel was toward the lighter side of the style.

Overall a tasty and user friendly IPA. A bit understated however.

This was one of the best beers I have tasted at the Brutopia. Appearance was nice, a dark golden beer with a little head and medium carbonation.

Smell was nice, lot of spicy and slight resinous hops going on and a good maltiness. The hops were spicy and really invited me to drink it.

Taste was bitter, but not what I expected from the smell. Usually these kind of beers have a good hop aroma and a firm bitter. This beer seemed to only have a good hop smell. Not that it wasn't bitter, but for me it should be a little more bitter.
What I tasted in other brewpub's IPAs was a good grainy or malt-taste, which this one lacked. Nevertheless, a good beer I enjoyed very much in Montreal.

A - A light very clear, reddish amber coloured beer with little head that quickly fades. Has little carbonation

S - A nice little bitter scent of hops, but mostly it has the typical sweet smell of Brutopia malts. Perhaps the bar atmosphere and cold temperature reduce the scent.

T - Starts off sweet with that usual Brutopia taste, common to all of their beers. It gives it a nice biscuity, bready flavour without any fruitiness despite the sweetness. It gives away to a nice bitterness with the flavours of American hops, pine needles, leaves, and cloves to close a whip quick, refreshing finish, despite low carbonation.

M - A Rather coarse, drying feel to it, with a refreshing bite coming from the hops.

D - Huge drinkability, I tend to go through half a dozen of these in a sitting. It's straightfoward simple flavours make it easy to enjoy and wow, is it ever refreshing on a hot summer day.

This beer changes often enough, this one was had on July 28, 2007 at the start of a fresh batch.

A clear deep amber brew, an offwhite head with some lacing.

The smell has a honey character, but some herbs and fruits as well.

A sweet bread character, some citrioc notes and a slightly metallic bitterness.

Little carbonation, somewhat thin, slightly coarse texture and a dry finish.

Nope, not really a winner, a slight uneven and metallic feeling.

Taken from notes from a recent trip to Montreal and Vermont.

On tap at Brutopia. Pours a dark, translucent amber color with 1/4 inch of head. Lots of lacing. The aroma is somewhat malty with some spicy and floral hops. Almost a soapy smell. This one has a lot of malt flavor for an IPA. It's malty upfront with some nice floral hop bitterness. Spicy hops at the finish along with the malts. Dry and slick mouthfeel. Overall, a decent malt forward IPA that still has a good amount of hops. Nice change of pace from the usual American IPA.

Pours a clear orange/amber, small tight white head, nice lacing. Smells floral, perfumy, some smokey malt and cream is evident. Tastes floral, some pine, crisp malt, nice and bready with a fruity bitter finish. Mouthfeel is smooth, medium bodied, medium carbonation, clean, tasty and refreshing.

Brutopia was our first stop on our weekend trip to Montreal and this was the first beer I had there. It's a great place, but I'll save all that for the BeerFly review.

Reddish-amber pour with a slight head. Left a little bit of lacing down the glass, but not much. Subtle aroma for an IPA. Not much hops or malt present. The hops come through more in the taste. I really like the taste but here's something missing. More malt maybe? I think it would definitely make this brew more full-bodied. Nice mouthfeel and very drinkable. I wanted another one right away but I got caught up playing some shuffleboard on the table with some other college kids. I'll save that for the BeerFly review as well. This was the best beer out of the three that I had at Brutopia.

Probably the best brewpub I've visited (so far) in Canada. This was, IMHO, their best brew. Had the sampler but found myself nicely settled into several pints of this fine IPA. Amber colored, rocky head, exceptional malt backbone, superbly hopped.

Slightly hazy, deep amber colour with a thin, off-white head. Seems like there could be some chill haze trouble since it cleared up a bit as it warmed. Aromas of grainy malt, slight spiciness and floral/citrus hops. Plenty of hop flavours in the american style, moderate maltiness and a bit spicy. Bitterness is a little on the low side, but comes out a little stronger at the finish. This is a pretty good beer, if not a spectacular example of an IPA, and one that I'd definitely have again.

Had this on tap at Brutopia. Pours a copper colour with a finger or two of white head. Some lacing around the glass. Smells of a mix of floral and citrus hops with maybe a hint of pine. Lots of caramel malt too. Nice mild bitterness balanced with a big caramel sweetness. Good carbonation level. I'd say this is part way between an American and English IPA, but it works.

A simple but considerably full beer. Great retention and bold amber-like colour. Strong hops in the nose, contribute to a long crisp, bitter finish. The hop choice is good. Strong fruity, estery notes - grapefruit taste overpowers eventually (as per the hops). Good bitterness and overall full-bodied beer. Quite refreshing all year round. I was pleasantly surprised with this one, glad to see this brewpub offer an authentic style IPA - and a pretty decent one at that.

A - Dark ruby-red body with a nice creamy head. Good lacing and decent head retention. Not much in the way of carbonation.

S - Loads of citrus hops in the nose. Some caramel and vanilla notes. Floral and pleasant, but not very strong a scent overall.

T - The taste is bursting with juicy grapefruit and caramel maltness, as well as hints of orange. Very floral, with just a hint of pine. The bitterness is there, but it is mild enough to be enjoyed by many drinkers, regardless of them being keen on hops. The finish has got some bitter grapefruit notes and some of that mild bitterness as well. Very tasty and quite complex overall.

M - Medium-bodied. Goes down smooth and is not very filling. Very moderate carbonation.

D - Quite high. I had my full pint after another beer and it was still very drinkable and enjoyable.

A damn good IPA that I had on tap at this cozy little(!) brewpub on Crescent street in Montreal the last time that I was there. This beer poured a nice dark red, copper colour with a decent size head on it as well. This smelled very oily, and hoppy(almost like hop juce:-) A hopheads delight this was very reminiscent of a SNCA, or a HopDevil and it was definately a treat. This tasted like more of the same...a very hoppy IPA with enough of a malt backbone to make it a treat for hopheads and mass market consumers alike! This had a very good mouthfeel that was crisp, sharp, and yet malty as well. This had a good drinkability factor and if I was hanging around at Brutopia I would of definately knocked a few more of these back. I was bar-hopping the night I had this so I just had 1 20oz and I was on my way out the door...a bit wiser, in the fact that I now know that there is a great brewpub on Crescent street, and if any of my fellow BA's are planning on visiting Montreal, PQ anytime soon....I can definately recommend the Chateau Royale Hotel, which is actually only about a block or two from this fine brewpub...
cheers!,
F.

Served in a pint. Unknown ABV.

A - Amber colour with copper & orange hues. 0.5cm white head reduced to a thin bubbly layer. Lots of lacing.

S - Grapefruit, caramel, hops, floral notes. Good but mild aroma.

T - Caramel malts, citrus/grapefruit, lots of hops in the finish.

M - Medium carbonation, medium body, slightly rustic texture, some stickiness, lasting hoppy aftertaste. Alcohol wasn't detectable but I'd guess it's in the 5%-6% range.

O - Pretty good IPA. Too bad I won't get to try it again any time soon since my trip to Montreal is over.

Had on-tap in a tasting glass on 8/10/11. From notes:

A: Clear copper color with some red highlights. Small head, decent lacing.

S: Very fruity (grapefruit, berries) hop nose with some herbal notes. Light malt background.

T: Initial juicy hop flavor fades quickly into outright bitterness, supported by some toasted, almost burnt, grain. Odd metallic flavor on the finish. Grain bill seemed a little shoddy.

M: Medium to light bodied. Crisp carbonation. Slight clawing feel. Finished bitter.

O: Tastes about half as good as it smells, in my opinion. Liberally dry-hopped, I'm guessing, but the rest needed some help. Tasted a bit cheap (like a "beer-y" macro flavor) as it was swallowed, which is what really did it for me. It was still drinkable, but considering the selection I probably wouldn't order it again.
